This is our vlog, we will be documenting the different things we go and do along the way. The common theme will be our corgi who goes along with us! We have a Corgi, a Jeep and a travel trailer. I'm a computer programmer, I use cannon eos m50 and gopro to film (and enjoy/learning to film). We enjoy reviewing and documenting things life presents us with. We are part-time RV, and working towards retirement and becoming full time RV/retired (many years out). Currently this is a hobby of mine, but I would hope this becomes something bigger by the time we retire. Trying to be honest, and helpful.

Did Flagpole last July, in the pouring rain, all stock. It was a blast. Did this with my Jeeper club. We had a great time. There was one rocky spot that gave me a bit of a challenge.

Good videos in this "series". We watched them all. Good to see some Virginia content as a person who lives in Virginia. The forest service off road guide you mention is a good resource. The National Geographic Trails Illustrated maps are really good too. If you don't like roughing it too much, the Brandywine Recreation Area which is near Flagpole is a good place to camp. If you don't have a 4x4, you can go to Redish Knob. Pavement all the way to the top which surprised me when we were doing some camping and exploring around Brandywine.

I appreciate your content. I am about to buy a 4x4 truck and do some trail riding and camping so this helped a lot to visually see what to do before I go do it! I live in Appomattox, VA. and plan to do flagpole and camp somewhere out there.

I think you are understating the difficulty of this trail. I think the Union Springs side would exceed the capabilities of most people. I've done it twice. I have a stock 4Runner Trail with sliders. Both times I had to stack rocks to avoid damage. Caved in front skid plate as well. So yes a stock JK or JL can do this trail but I wouldn't want to do it in a stock WK2. Also trail narrow in places with overgrown branches. Be prepared for some significant pin striping of vehicle. I think this is a great trail for beginners with a capable stock vehicle to go with someone experienced to learn and enjoy. Also first time I was on this trail there were numerous trees down blocking it, gladd I bring a chainsaw with me. Nice video BTW. Looking forward to seeing more.

Agreed. I ran it a couple years ago from the opposite direction in a stock JKU. It was definitely pushing my limits. One of the guys went up the staircase with a stock JKU Sahara. I took the bypass. 😂

I absolutely agree with you Charles Gibbs! This is not a soccer mom minivan trail! I just lifted my Jeep and 35” tires and there were a few spots that we were like oh shit. Halfway thru the one obstacle we were on 3 wheels the ass end was in the air. Rear tire off the ground. Yes, we are new but.. you definitely can roll your Jeep in that spot. 60% of this trail is NOT BIG ENOUGH for two vehicles to pass each other without falling off the mountain. It’s not as simple as just pulling over to let someone pass. Some spots someone has to back up quite a way and that is sometimes impossible. That should only be a one way trail. All and all we had a great time but it was not soccer mom simple.

I have done all three paths in my 4Runner - well, tried Union Springs but had to turn around after a while (that was fun) as I didn't have a "qualified" spotter. The other two paths are doable IMO for most people with at least some modicum of competence. Briery Branch being the easiest.

Significant pinstriping at all times of the year? I was going to go with a group tomorrow but I just bought my Jeep 3 days ago and would prefer not to damage it until I get some paint protection on.

I've done this from different sides, and the side coming in from Briery Branch is pretty tame for the most part, and if you're new I'd suggest taking that route to the top, where you can get out and picnic or camp. The Block Hollow / Switzer Lake side (there are really three paths here) is a bit harder, had to stack rocks in my 4Runner a couple of times, but it was a little more challenging but I didn't have any issues. I tried Union Springs once in my 4Runner, and I didn't have a qualified spotter, so I turned around after a while. It was getting much more technical. I like this trail because there are essentially three paths with varying difficulties you can choose from.

I am coming from PA , and want to end our day at the Lake so we can camp and fish . So should we start the trail from the north or the south.. in other words is the lake on the north end pf the trail or the south end of the trail .. if it is north that would be excellent because it would be on our way home.. thanks in advance for reply 👍

After Peters Mill with my stock 2022 Nissan Frontier, I'm looking at this while I still have time on my vacation. I thank you for these videos and while I don't have a very 'trail rated' vehicle, I think my pickup, if it can handle Peters Mill, can possibly handle this.

First of all, very much appreciate the video and information. Big help. But, as a newbie, I would not call this an easy trail. The On X Off-roading tail map rates it 4/10. I made it ok with my stock JLUR. But not without a helpful spotter and some scrapping. And we picked up a 4Runner in route that had a tough time of it. We had to stack rocks for him at one point. The vast majority of the 12 mile trail is very easy. But there are a few obstacles that will test a newbie. If you are a first timer would not suggest going alone. Or do it but expect a few periods of stress. But fun stress.

Watched this to try and get my bearings and I have a quick question. You said to set the GPS to Blueberry Trail and then to Flagpole Knob once you reach Blueberry Trail. Is that correct? Based on at least Google, it looks like the route from Blueberry => Flagpole takes a fairly long way around and it eventually hooks up with the Forest Road 85, bypassing what I've come to understand to be the Union Springs "trail." Is that accurate?

Great video man, my friends and I are tackling this next month. I am from West Virginia and was wondering if firearms are allowed on this trail to keep in the car and on person as well as any trail permits needed before you go? Thank you!
@corgily
@corgily 4 года назад
For National Forests the key thing to keep in mind is firearms are prohibited inside the forestry ranger's station. Other then that you just follow virginia laws. Note currently with Covid-19, its a felony to wear a mask and have a fire arm on your body (concealed or open carry). Either you carry the gun or wear the mask, but not both at the same time.
@garretlewis4103
@garretlewis4103 3 года назад
@@corgily I am NOT a lawyer. Virginia code (18.2-422) does make it a class 6 felony to conceal your identity with a mask (and several other items mentioned). Since you are wearing a mask not to conceal your identity and the Governor has signed executive orders concerning masks and states of emergency related to COVID-19, you should be able to wear a mask and carry (I would recommend concealed so people don't "freak out") without worry of committing a felony. Again, I am NOT a lawyer. A quick Google search revealed several reliable news sources which also stated this was the case. Also, you cannot open carry in the National Forests of Virginia unless it is hunting season (check the hunting regulations); however, you can concealed carry. If you carry, always do your research.

What new off road parks have you heard of? Think a stock 2015 Forrester could do the entire trail?
@corgily
@corgily 4 года назад
If you've never taken it out then probably the union springs side will be challenging for you, the lake side would be cake. If your even a little experienced or have someone who can spot you through one or two tiny spots you could probably do the entire thing with little difficulty and just a little work. Vehicles are way more capable then people think they are. I saw an F150 go up the union springs side stock, and a Forrester i think is all wheel drive. :)

I have heard the some of the trails, although few, need permits to use and you can buy them, i.e. peters mill run, does this one need a permit to use? also, what road is this? is this the one up from switzer lake. Additionally, do you think a stock chevy s10 would be able to get through this, mostly on the lake side
@corgily
@corgily 4 года назад
Yes easily. On the lake side small cars, suburbans, everything goes up it. The 'trick' is if its an Forestry OHV trail, it requires an OHV pass typically (Petermill Mill in VA, Uwharrie's OHV system in NC). If its a regular Forestry Road, then no permit is required. Flag Pole, Dictum, Second Mountain, Feedstone, Long Run those are all forestry Roads.
