Jon that flail mower did a fantastic job mulching up smaller brush! Iv been wanting to get one for maintaining/opening up land in the woods behind my house.. when you started plowing over those large bushes I said “this guy is a maniac!” Haha! Excellent demonstration of the Kubota BX and its versatility, you got a ton of work done 👍🏻

I did end up tearing both boots of the steering linkage. So that will be another video coming. I think that's a pretty easy job though. I'm really surprise I haven't torn those in the past. That flail mower though, I can't believe what it's capable of! I figure if it breaks it breaks. 🤷‍♂️ Thanks for the comments! Keep on tractoring! 👍

Haha! For anyone looking for a poor saw as I know John mentioned in the video.. I highly recommend a Milwaukee m18 cordless pullsaw.. I have their string trimmer but plan to buy the pole saw attachment very soon for it, my buddy has it and it works amazing for anyone who is obsessed with cordless tools like I am.. I also use a Stihl gas powered one at work which works really well for you guys who like gas.
@Vaessen13

@@BiffsEquipment Nice, ya I've worked with the Stihl combi gas trimmer and I've used the stihl pole saw with an extended arm before. I highly recommend it. The battery operated Stihl is getting big so I'm curious about that. I think anything under a foot or half a foot could easily be done by a battery operated saw.
@BiffsEquipment
@BiffsEquipment 3 года назад
@@Vaessen13 I totally agree! The stihl cordless tools are also great, Iv seen them used professionally as well as Milwaukee and both work great.. that’s gonna more come down to what eco system your already into.. if you already have power tools by Milwaukee I suggest Milwaukee but if not and you don’t plan to have Milwaukee power tools then stihl would be my next best bet when it comes to a cordless saw or pole saw.

I've been looking at the Echo PAS system they have. I'd like the paddle wheel for clearing snow off of sidewalks also. I'd find many uses for it. The 2520 power head is what I think I need. Keep on tractoring! 👍
@Vaessen13
@Vaessen13 3 года назад
@@ritterjon I've used the rubber paddle wheel on a stihl bicycle combi trimmer. I swept out a steep ditch full of gravel from the snow plough that my BX power broom couldn't do because of the steep angle. It works great, just be mindful that the connectors are plastic so the core of the paddle wheel is meant to break before your trimmer pto. Buy a couple of spare cores if you get the plastic paddle

Hi Jon. I'm late to the game on this video, but I have a few questions if you have a moment. I also have the BX23S and I'm considering the FH-EFG125 medium duty 48"; which I think is the one you have. Did you pay the extra and get the forged hammers or go with the cast hammers than come with it? Also, are the belts hard to find or do you have to order them from Betsco? Thanks!

I’d like a flail mower especially for the BX, but you can actually get a 6’ or 7’ for not much more. It’s like that with most attachments which is why I don’t have much to use on my BX. I really like the end results of the flail mower. Good luck on the pole saw, ECHO should definitely help you as much as you’ve promoted their products!

@@ritterjon I have my grandfather's old Echo 302s that's approaching 40 years old. I need to do a carburetor and fuel line replacement on it here pretty soon and get it tuned up and running again, its been a couple years since I've used it and last time it was leaking fuel and the carburetor needed a carb kit, its time to get it out and fired up again. Not sure where to really buy Echo equipment anymore, my grandfather bought his at a hardware store that my uncle used to work at. Seems the box stores have some Echo stuff but how good is it? Well I bought an Echo chainsaw from Home Depot several years back, used it twice, and it would never start again. Wasn't impressed at that point, and went and got my grandfather's old Echo out and finished the job that a brand new saw failed at. Not sure if there are any actual Echo dealers anymore, I'll have to check around, I would love to get a new Echo chainsaw.

Ive got a 24.7 hp tractor which translates to 18 hp at the PTO and looked into the flail mowers. The EFG 125 is the 48" medium duty mower that can eat up to 2" diameter material. The heavy duty EFGC eats up to 3" diameter, but my tractor doesn't have enough power to run the 48" heavy duty. The Betstco rep said the EFGC 41" heavy duty model will work, so I ordered it. Should get it in a week or so. Cant wait! I sacrificed 7 inches of width to get the heavy duty model. I think It will pay off. We'll see.
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 2 года назад
You'll be able to run the 48 medium duty no problem but if it's large brush you want to tackle maybe the 41 heavy duty is best for you. I've never ran it so I don't know its capabilities. I like the 48 because it's the same width as the tractor. Keep on tractoring!

It depends on what type of grass and weeds. The only problem I had was with some very fibrous swamp grass. The type you can cut your fingers on when you pull it. My BX2680 is being delivered on Monday afternoon WOOHOO!!! Finally, after about a month of waiting. Won't be delivered with the mower unfortunately as it had to be ordered, as did the pallet forks. Oh well. It'll give me time to get some other chores done with it while waiting for the mower and pallet forks. I have been thinking about ordering that flail mower, not with the hammer blades as I don't really have brush to cut, I think the flail mower would work great out in my pasture area that's nice and wide open. Mostly pasture grass if I ever get water on it again, just weeds right now though unfortunately....hoping to get an irrigation pump here soon. My Messick's 3 point adjustable stabilizer kit showed up today...so it'll get installed pretty quickly after I get the tractor. I see there's a 4" wood chipper available from BETSTCO as well for about $1900....thinking of ordering one, I think between the flail mower, wood chipper, roto tiller, box blade, loader, and mower deck I could keep myself quite busy throughout the summer and fall, and probably get enough side money to buy the snow blower or snow blade for the winter...may have to just go into the side business altogether, I think I'd enjoy it much more than my current job.

@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 3 года назад
I can do that but not in a video. I need a tractor that can do things my Cub Cadet XT1 42" lawn tractor cannot do...oh like running a front end loader, roto-tilling, running a box blade, that type of stuff that a lawn tractor built in the past what about 20 years can't manage because they're nothing more than a lawn mower you sit on, they can't handle the tractor tasks like some of the old Cub Cadet lawn/garden tractors from the 60's and 70's could do. Hell they don't even make attachment for these new ones for that very reason, they can't handle anything other than mowing duties...and they're owned by MTD so even worse.
@brianr1812
@brianr1812 3 года назад
All good. Jon's lot is less than an acre and had lawn tractor before upgrading. His bx does more, sure - but that's not the interesting part to me. It is how he made the leap to justify the expense, and how he got everyone else onboard with that decision, and his process of finding the deal that put had him finally pull the trigger - those are interesting details to me.
@wildbill23c
@wildbill23c 3 года назад
@@brianr1812 Prior to the Cub Cadet I had a Craftsman YT4000 lawn tractor. I babied that thing for 7 years just to get it to last that long before the engine threw a rod. Wasn't impressed with that thing. So after it died I had thought well I'd go look at a John Deere X700 series garden tractor. Something larger, and maybe something that would last. What sent me over the edge into BX territory was the price they want for one of those X700's. For that kind of money for a couple thousand bucks more I could get the BX2680 and a loader and be able to do more with it than the garden tractor ever would. So here 4 years later I'm taking delivery on my BX2680 with loader, 60 inch mid mount mower, roto tiller, box blade and pallet forks. Yep about $24k worth of tractor, and implements but it's going to save me a lot of time and effort over the next several years on the property, yeah I only have an acre, but when you are by yourself and work all the time it gets out of hand pretty quickly and I needed something I could count on to get the work done that my lawn tractor cannot do.

@@ritterjon That is the best thing about strawberries. They don't require anything. They will choke out any weeds, and grow in partial shade, they shoot runners that self propagate. I would love to be physically able and to have the land to do stuff like that. I use to love doing landscaping work in my large yard before the motorcycle wreck that left me physically broken to the point that only God can fix me now. The doctors did a fine job saving my life and putting me back together the best they could. But when you broadside a pickup at 45MPH that pulled out in front of you on a county road it take a toll on ones body. They said that I was airborne for over 50ft. as my passenger and I flow over the pickup truck. Yes it killed both of us but I wouldn't stay dead they brought me back 3 times then I slipped into a coma for 21 days of pure hell in my mind. That's another long nightmare of a story. As for my rider she was 72yo. she went on to glory without me. I miss her everyday. That was back in September 14th 2012. But besides being stuck in a bed most of the time I still praise God that I can do the outreach work I did before the wreck I just now do it over the internet rather than riding across miles. Well I've rambled on enough no idea why I said all this but I'm just an old physically broken saddle sore biker that loves to ramble I guess. Much love and prayers be blessed in Jesus name... BBE..

Hope you'll be very happy with that flail mower. I haven't had any issues and I pretty much abuse the thing. It's a great value that's for sure. Hope your wife understands and isn't too upset with me. 😂😂 Keep on tractoring!

Cool video you mentioned you need a pole saw does echo make a pole saw ?
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 3 года назад
They actually make a few versions. One dedicated extendable pole saw and another system they call the PAS which can adapt to other tools such as a trimmer, hedger, edger, paddle wheel and much more. Then they have a battery lineup also. I love their products! Keep on tractoring! 👍

I live in New Mexico and have never seen a flail for sale. Where do you get one?
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 3 года назад
Here is where I got mine. There are other manufactures but this is what I have. betstco.com/flail-mowers/ medium duty EFG125. It works great! Keep on tractoring!

This is a 4 foot flail. Just perfect size for the BX. Keep on tractoring!

I use a Stihl combi, works for me. Has a pole saw attachment (which I use).

I’d like to get the Echo version. Not that I don’t like Stihl, I just like My stuff to match. Keep on tractoring!

Do you have to sharpen those hammer blades?
@ritterjon
@ritterjon 3 года назад
About once a year. I found flipping the entire mower on its back and using an angle grinder is the best way. Doesn't take long at all. Keep on tractoring! 👍

I know that flail mower uses a shear bolt instead of a slip clutch how often do you break shear bolts cutting thru heavy brush?
@ritterjon
@ritterjon Год назад
It’s actually belt driven with 2 parallel belts. The belts work like a slip clutch would. I’ve yet to break a shear pin. Keep on tractoring!
