In 12 years of owning my 2007 H2, I have been very happy with the truck, but I have had the Oil Pressure Sender replaced (4) times, three times by the dealer, all failed within 1,000 miles... pinned over on the 80 psi and stayed there. Just before my 8,400 mile, 2 month, 22 state road trip across America Sept. - November 2020, hitting most National Parks and Monuments... I had my local Mobile Mechanic replace the Oil Pressure Sender, which he did without taking off the Intake Manifold... he had that sucker out in 10 minutes, found a loose bolt on the back of my engine block, tightened it and cleaned off the wiring and contacts on the Oil Pressure Sender. This time the OPS lasted through 2 months of torrential downpour and freezing conditions in Montana, Wyoming, the Smokey Mountains and a flash freeze along the Mexico border in Texas the end of October 2020 on my return trip to Vegas. So far, the 4th OPS is doing fine. Oh what a difference a mechanic that actually cares can make. Also on that 8,400 mile road trip ALL FOUR side marker lights went out. I replaced them all with LEDs and now they SCREAM BRIGHTNESS. My mobile mechanic just replaced my steering box, only charged me $391 to remove and replace with a new steering box and now my 2007 H2 has ZERO play in the steering.

Hi Cole, I'm getting ready to add an LED light bar to the front grill of my H2. The only place I can find to run wires through the firewall in order to mount a switch on the dash is to punch a hole in the boot covering the OEM wires already running through the firewall. Have you had to run wires through the firewall yet, and if so how did you do it?
@theaveragemechanic
@theaveragemechanic 3 года назад
There’s a plug in the firewall I made a hole in the middle of it and ran the wires through that so they won’t rub on the metal.

I actually have the exact same 08 blue electric side steps. I been thinking of putting a turbo in it, I’ll stay tuned in to see how it goes for you. I can tell you know a few things about the hummer, my GM mechanic argued with me and didn’t believe me that it had a 6.2

Do you recommend tuning an 03 Hummer H2 with 146,000 miles? Just bought it havent taken it to my mechanic yet, unsure if the transmission has been replaced yet.. will be asking him all your recommendations. Thanks for all your knowledge and info!
@theaveragemechanic
@theaveragemechanic 4 года назад
Hey, thank you! Yes I definitely recommend tuning, but to leave all the transmission stuff in the tune alone. You will get a lot better fuel mileage and better throttle response. Enjoy your new toy and I hope to catch you in future videos!

Did you do the tune yourself with the HP tuners or do you have to take the truck somewhere? If you did do the tune yourself, is it difficult or is it easy enough for a first timer to do it on their own? I have no idea where to start with something like that
@theaveragemechanic
@theaveragemechanic 3 года назад
I tuned it myself with HPTuners. I’m a knowledgeable beginner..... it’s not hard if you understand why and what your changing. I learned everything from a channel called goat rope garage he walks you through everything you need to do to get a tune dialed in. I don’t recommend experimenting with your daily driver because a lot can go wrong also you can literally destroy so many things with it if you aren’t careful soooooo if your going to do it yourself BE CAREFUL, go slow and write down notes on what you changed so you’ll know what to change back if something isn’t right.

@@theaveragemechanic Hey just curious cause I couldn't find the answer, generally what's the gas mileage you're getting? Curious what I can expect of a tuner when I finally do get the tune on my '08. I'd imagine it would have to be better than the first gen since it's only a 4speed and the gen2 has a 6speed

looove your videos..a few questions 1. Hey...i know nothing about tuning. Do you have a list of credible people to get professional tuning from in Georgia? 2. is there an exact tune I should get for my gen 1 H2 to maximized my fuel efficiency and power? Which one did you use? (exact settings?)..again I know nothing about tuning. 3. I heard you can get a few extra horsepower in the gen 1s by changing out the fan clutch to electric fans, but you must have the ECU reflashed to make them come on. Thoughts? 4. I just replaced my exhaust manifolds. The new ones are a bit heavier and aluminum versus the severely warped steel ones that came from the factory. I've read that switching to headers, shortys or fulls with dual exhaust can increase gas mileage. (they sell slender dual exhaust systems that will fit in the big single exhaust cavity under the H2) Thoughts? 5. Have you converted your Daytime Running Lights (DRLs) to foglights? I though about doing that, but again, I heard if you want to use a stock GM switch with foglights (like the tahoes & denalis), you have to reflash the ECU to get the stock switch to work. See here: www.amazon.com/ACDelco-D6378D-Original-Equipment-Window/dp/B000EQR710 . I wired this switch up to my DRLs, but it wouldn't come on. I've been told this is because the ECU doesn't recognize the switch & foglights as a feature. I therefore have to get it reflashed. Thoughts? 6. Finally, thinking about switching to LBZ w/Allyson transmission platform...thoughts? love your videos...sorry such a long post...big h2 enthusiast

Hello Dr. Hamilton! The Tuning in my opinion has to be done custom to your vehicle so a tuner is going to use a program called HP Tuners and they can adjust many things in your computers I don’t recommend any of the hand held units because the only upload another pre made tune that not going to 100% reflect how your vehicle is running. I don’t have any connections in Georgia but there is a huge racing and custom community there. Best way to find a tuner is to talk to the guys with camaros and corvettes they all have similar computers so if someone is capable of tuning of of those they can tune your hummer. Finding someone who has an AWD dyno to do the tune on might be a bit tougher but shouldn’t be hard. As far as the fans I do recommend switching to electric fans and the temps for on and off are changed in the tune. How ever the fog light switch isn’t a computer issue. It’s a mater of the wiring. I did change mine from being DRL’s to fogs but I ran a relay and fuse panel already so I hard wired the fogs into that. There’s lots of right ups on how to run the power right into the stock fuse box. Exhaust will definitely help your gas mileage pretty much any level of after market is gonna flow more than stock but you won’t really see a difference till the truck is tuned. But yes long tube headers, high flow cats, to an X pipe to true duals would be best if you’re not held to a strict budget. I like the magnaflow’s I think they flow way better than most of the other brands while still retaining some muffling effects. I don’t like a super loud exhaust but that’s just me. Finally an LBZ swap sounds awesome but people want crazy money to do them. Unless it’s something you can tackle yourself and you have a complete donor truck I don’t see the benefits to getting rid of the LS style motor other than fuel mileage and more low end torque than you have from the factory. The thing is you can make crazy power with these motors if you know what your doing. However swapping to a different transmission is something I would do but I would go with a 4L80e or 4L90e there are kits available and as far as reliability and costs this is probably the best option for any kind of transmission upgrade and probably the best upgrade for reliability and peace of mind that you can do to a first GEN H2. Thanks for watching if you have any more questions feel free to contact me on Instagram and I hope to catch you next time!

@@theaveragemechanic this is great ...as for the fogs, I was talking about for using the stock GM switch they use on the tahoes and denalis...how do you wire the factory switch? I can't get the foglight button to work. I didn't want to use an aftermarket switch. Also will the headers (long or shortys) make the Hummer a lot louder? I've been told headers can make it unbearably louder. I'm like you...I like a little rumble, but not to loud where I got a ton of cabin noise. what's your instagram handle?
@theaveragemechanic
@theaveragemechanic 4 года назад
I’ve never seen the switch used but that sounds like a nice clean way to do it. Sounds like there’s got to be write up somewhere I’ve also disabled my auto head lights. Headers will change the tone of the exhaust but not make It crazy loud, although you will hear your valve train a bit more that’s for sure. The cat and what muffler you choose is gonna make the biggest difference. If you were to run catless it would get much louder. If you watch my G8 version of this video my G8 has long tube headers, no cats with an X pipe and magnaflows and it’s not to loud. It will actually quiet down a bit once the turbos are on. @@theaveragemechanic Hello Cole, hope to find you well, Great news and not so great, let me explain. First H2 2008 flew away, but I was there looking and suddenly another came out on sale. A bit high on mileage, but the guy took good care of him, outside looks amazing properly re-painted, interior leather and carpet is completely new (seats electric blue leather, good stitching finishing, copy-paste of original, black interior carpet good quality), plus an ad on pretty cool: inside ceiling fiberglass integrated roof lights, with remote to change the colors or auto changing, haha cool stuff!!. Price almost 15k usd, a bit pricy, asking price was 19k usd. Now the bad things, the guy screw the original bose radio and mounted a Chinese android one, so Dolby surround and upper screen bye-bye, installed but not working, no remote, no infrared headsets, lets see if i can restore the old system, could be nice to have it, or find a compatible decent brand one, since the Chinese sure has different output than the original speaker's lines and has a sisisng background noise, buffff what a waste. Of course, is a 99k Mi on the dash, lots of changes had to suffer till I got it, now will try to restore it to as much as possible to its classic original shape. Techk-mech glitches: -Left rear pax seatbelt does not retract or do the retainer function. -Bonet locking system does not latch -Engine compartment sealing transversal rubber seal needs to be replaced -As well the door sills rubber need a change -Door pax open DIC message. -Pax Airbag light on the upper windshield indicator is on (not sure if that's an inop indication or not) -Welcoming lights and exit not being able to reprogram. -Some wheel alignment is needed but not much, like maybe a 1/2 inch turning wheel offset to drive straight -past 60 mph right pax mirror vibrates too much -Driver sun visor glass cover broken. -And the biggest one, ride for a month with me, we went to the beach, some bumps, and the day after a front left leak from the engine compartment. Now is by GMC to get it to check and hopefully is not a big thing and can go back with me to continue the restoration. I have 4 extra connectors for lights, two by front bumper and 2 by outside upper roof rack. Btw I did an undercoating and bumper repainting already, after checking for corrosion signs. Wish could share some pics of the Hummer, but not sure if possible here. Let's see how it goes. Thank you for being there and for writing too much so far. Kind regards. Jesus.
