Omg!!!! Yesssss...So I work in the airline industry and 95% of the ladies that work with me are naturals. I’m currently mid back length and every time I relax my hair and wear it down, people have comments about MY HAIR!! They act like being relaxed is a disease. My hair is the healthiest and longest it’s ever been. I listen to my hair and stopped letting other people take care of my hair. Once I formed that bond...my hair flourished. #TeamRelaxed 😜

I was relaxed from 16 to 51. Natural 52 to 58. Learned so much about my hair so I do thank the natural hair community for all their wisdom and advice. But at 58 after much consideration I had enough of loss weekends, detangling, single strand knots, unpredictable hair, telling my husband my hair wasn’t dry so I wasn’t ready, wearing numerous hats as I never have worn braids, weaves or wigs in my life, spending $$$ trying to find the right “miracle” product etc. My hair is thick, coarse and BSL. It just wasn’t that serious to me at my age. I mean darn I want to spend my time and worry on more important things. My family. So I went back to a relaxer. Difference is I now know my hair and self relax every 12 to 16 weeks (not the old school way of 6 to 8 weeks). Coming up on 2 years this spring ( will be 60 this summer) and I couldn’t be happier with my hair. And my time!🤗

Thank you very much for sharing your personal experience. Yes, I believe the whole healthy hair journey movement really equipped us WOC with the right knowledge and education to achieve healthy hair and longer hair. I really appreciate your honesty regarding the struggles you faced while natural. Sacrificing quality time with your family is definitely a red flag. I think folks were afraid of relaxed hair because of their lack of knowledge on proper care. After caring for natural, you learn how to moisturize, go heat free etc. I also think a lot of people went natural to repair damage and never really wanted to stay natural.

Right! I'm going to stay natural because it's better for ME. My hair is manageable and healthy and I was thin with a perm and that's probably because I over permed the hell out of it and didn't properly care for it. But NEVER would I EVER try and tell another person what to do with their hair! I wish somebody would! I watch and listen to women that are in a rage about another women going back to perming her hair. Like if you don't sit your angry, miserable a@@ back and mind your own business. I think those women may feel insecure because they don't want to be part of a small group of naturals, especially if they're 4c. Without a large mass of other naturals, they won't be as confident.
@deenacurls
@deenacurls 4 года назад
I think a lot of the people who are going back to relaxers, went natural hoping for a hair texture they was never meant to have. They wanted that 3b- 4a hair, hair like naptural85 or jewjewbee and ended up with 4b and 4c. It's beautiful but not what they wanted or expected. A lot of the naturals that have gotten relaxers have these tighter curls and kinks and it was too much work and not want they desired and that's ok. It's their hair and they can do what they please with it. I just haven't seem many people that went natural that got looser textures go back there's been a few but the majority is tighter textured hair. That's my thoughts on it
@kaylynboyd2035
@kaylynboyd2035 4 года назад
Exactly. All the comments complaining about tangles or hair not styling how they want it is because they never learned their texture. They were constantly just trying to alter it. But to each their own ig.

4c hair is no joke. I have almost tailbone 4c hair at its a lot of work. But for me relaxing would not work out because I would probably cut it all off because that is too much hair lol. Also I support any decision ladies make natural or relaxed as long has its heathy and happy.😆

@kaimommy2876 4 года назад
I have 3c/4a hair according to that silly typing scale, and it was the devil. The soft looser curls had their own share of issues compared to the 4c ladies hair. 3c hair is not all that it is cracked up to be, i'm telling yall. I relaxed mine in NOV after being natural 6 years. No regrets at all, and I will never go back to natural. It was fun, but that relationship is over. I enjoy the ease of manageability and styling with my hair now :)

When I was natural I NEVER wore my hair out. Too much time washing, detangling, styling. So I completely just left it and let it do whatever(mostly braids and wigs). I just relaxed back in Sep 2019 and I am extremely happy..... I’ve always experienced breakage but I obviously noticed it more with wearing my hair relaxed but I just recently got my Olaplex (Steps 3, 4 and 5) and I used it during my last root touch up (just did it in Jan 2020) and It made such a difference. When I root touch, I air dry then straighten and wear that til the next week and it’s back to my regimen. I’m very pleased with my relaxed hair. One thing I’m worried about is getting box braids as the summer time will come and I prefer the braids..... we’ll see. But I’m very happy with my hair. I maintain it more, I wear it out more(don’t have to rely on wigs and weaves) and I can clip my ends and deep condition and everything under the sun....... VERY HAPPY! It’s not as thick as Vals but she is legit the reason I went back to relaxed hair. I feel amazing..... currently sitting in a wet wrap (gonna air dry instead of sitting under the dryer) ❤️

OMGGG!! Thank you so much for sharing your experience. I’m so happy to hear that you are enjoying your hair more and wearing it out. That’s huge!! Olaplex is the truth and I’m happy to hear that it’s working for you. As for box braids, just ensure your hair is strengthened prior to install, moisturized while wearing it and strengthened after. Braids can be a bit drying to relaxed hair but definitely possible!! Enjoy luv 💕

I actually just went back to relaxer in August 2019. After 3 years natural. I went back to relaxing because of so many reasons, like: 1. Not being able to assess and correct damage with my hair in its natural state. 2. Single strand knots. 3. The timely maintenance of natural hair was affecting my lifestyle. 4. I wanted manageability. Wanted to be able to bun my hair, straighten my hair, wear weaves without having to do backflips and tricks to get my hair to conform. 5. I MISSED LOOKING SLEEK! I have ZERO regrets lol I am getting a relaxer tomorrow (12 weeks post).

Once I became natural, MY HAIR GREW in ways I did not think black hair could grow and then this year I stumbled on your channel and I have been binging your videos as well as the videos of other black QUEENS with relaxed hair and it HAS REVOLUTIONAZED how I feel about relaxed hair. I am really shook that even with relaxed hair your hair is thriving. I am going to take all of 2020 to learn about how to take care of relaxed hair and take the plunge back to relaxed hair. I will probably at some point miss natural hair as well but we'll see so far, I am enjoying learning about the dos and don'ts of relaxed hair and really learning from my mistakes when i was younger and had relaxed hair.

Thanks Alice for your perspective. I think that’s another reason as to why many naturals are now relaxing. @DS-Trina
@DS-Trina 4 года назад
Honestly, I think people are going back to relaxed hair because (1) They’re tired of spending so much time doing their hair and (2) they miss seeing their length. Some of these natural hairstyles have to be set way in advance, and then the style is most likely stretched for a few days so that their is no over-manipulation. When I don’t straighten my hair in the summer it’s a pain to do....sometimes I just put a scarf on because it’s just too much to get a style to look decent. How do you maintain your ends (trimming wise)?
@HairliciousInc
@HairliciousInc 4 года назад
Good point. To add to that, even when all of this work is put in, there no 100% guarantee that the style will turn out the way you want it too. But that’s with both natural and relaxed hair. I maintain my ends by trimming with every relaxer. My stylist takes off what needs to come off, which is usually 1/4inch or 1/2inch.
@TP-rc3ji
@TP-rc3ji 2 года назад
yes this is me! I've been natural for 12 years and I love it, but I miss seeing my length and now that I'm in my 30s I have less time for wash day, so my hair quality is starting to suffer. I've been thinking of relaxing again so my time involved will be shorter, but I'm also am attached to my curls. In the end I figure if I want to be natural again, I can always cut my hair after again in another 10 years lol. Plus the natural hair community is kinda toxic and self righteous lol. I think now that I've been natural for so long it will be easier to care for my relaxed hair cause now I actually know my hair and what it needs.

After relaxing I usually air dry just to give my hair a break and then I'll proceed with my normal routine 2-3 days after. I also noticed the wave of women returning to natural hair and it honestly makes me happy to see us unapologetically doing what we want to do to OUR hair. Although relaxers seem "old school" to some people, our knowledge about healthier practices have evolved and we're in a time where we can successfully grow long and healthy relaxed hair. We are no longer relaxing every 4-6 weeks or combing the relaxer through the length of our hair, or dealing with scalp burns. I've debated going natural but I just don't feel the need to at the moment when I know how to take care of my hair relaxed and appreciate the lower maintenance. #TeamRelaxed

My relaxed hair was breaking badly and thinning out and I didn’t know why .my hair was long MBL . So I decide to go natural to learn my hair more In 2015 .But last year June I went back relaxed because natural hair was expensive to maintain my hair drink a lot of products. I wasn’t seeing length, and I had single strand knots. And I’m happy about my relaxed hair it’s longer and I can trim easily . It’s low maintenance. And since I’ve studied hair, I learn to use, rice water, onion juice and iron supplements for shedding hair , moisture and seal every other day and wash my hair once a week. I no longer buy expensive products now I know about protein moisture balance. I relax every 12-14 weeks instead of 6 weeks back in the day and use less heat I flat iron on special well dress occasions

I've been seeing the trends, but for me I don't have any plans to go back to relaxing. My last relaxer was in 2010, I was in 9th grade. I went natural b/c I never knew what my hair texture was like, and my hair was damaged from not knowing how to take care of it. I was learning how to take care of my hair in general while going natural from seeing all the ladies on the hair forums. So for me, I would have to learn how to take care of relaxed hair, because before I was natural I was relaxing my own hair like... only one year maybe on my own. And before that my mom was relaxing it for me, and she's been natural for a few years now too. Overall, I've only been relaxed a short period of my life, and I mainly remember the smell, and the difficultly to relax it on my own, I would always over process b/c I have thick hair and couldn't get through it quick enough 😅 You're blessed to have someone help you. I'll never say never, because natural hair is not a piece of cake either, but I've just grown accustomed to it over these 10 years.

First off... beautiful hair! 😍😍😍. I recently relaxed after 8 years natural. I was actually on a loc journey when I decided that I was done. So I took 10 days to comb out my locs and relaxed my hair. It was on my mind for years.... I personally was trying to hang on to my natural hair because I felt I had too. I feel more like me with my relaxed hair and I have no regrets at all! My hair was long and relaxed before the big chop and I don’t regret going natural either. 2 months back relaxed and I’m so glad I followed what I wanted to do! Keep bringing great content!

So I’m slowly transitioning back to natural for the second time. I loved having relaxed hair, it was easy maintenance (as I can be lazy with hair and I’m always on the go) and how I was able to work with it and create a variety of styles. I’m curious about having natural hair, and feel a lot more informed and ready to maintain it, in comparison to when I first went natural. But if you want to have relaxed hair, there is nothing wrong with it. Hair is hair, and it is your decision. If this transition does not work the second time round, I might go back myself. 🤷🏾‍♀️

Did the same thing as you. Went back natural 2 1/2 years ago after going back to relaxers. Hated it. I missed the volume, thickness, texture, everything. Never thought I would miss it and actually fall in love with my natural hair. Now that I know how to embrace it and take care of it I can't even explain how much confidence it gave me. Hope it will be the same for you 💕

I literally always say this to people. I got relaxers for YEARS by a PROFESSIONAL! from 16-25. I only got it relaxed twice a year. I think a lot of people who had bad experiences with relaxers had someone who didnt know what they were doing putting them in. I never had any issues, my hair was in great condition, it was long and healthy, I always refused to go natural because I liked the ease of styling that came with having relaxed hair at a young age when I didn't know how to style my hair. I went natural 3 years ago because I wanted to do some bleaching and dying to my hair and I didn't want to risk breakage with the relaxer. I'm enjoying being natural but there are times I miss my relaxed hair. I say all this to say, we don't give energy to relaxer-shamers. It's my hair, mind your business, cause you don't even know what you're talking about. When I get bored again with my hair or tired of natural maintenance I'll be right back on #teamrelaxer

I never had broken off relaxed hair ppl used to ask me if I had weave and tell me I had “perm box” hair. It was always healthy n bouncy. Natural is a challenge due to my occupation, it can be boring and yes time consuming, but I love my hair. I’ve cut,colored, weaved, wigged but I love my natural. I’m on a growth journey now and have seen growth in the last year. Ppl can’t believe. I say whatever works best. Life is more than hair. And I love your hair. I’ve contemplated going back to relaxed hair because of time and money it takes to have healthy natural hair however after doing research on how chemicals in relaxers can affect your body I have decided to transition to heat trained natural hair instead of relaxing. My hair is more manageable now however I’m still struggling with finding the right products for heat training my hair. I can’t say I will never relax my hair but as of right now this seems to be the best option for me

I can only do twists right now and I love it but that has been the only natural hairstyle I can get to and its a little boring. I straightened my natural hair and I saw my length again and it was nice. I feel like I could see my hair again. I decided I was gonna do what I wanted to do with my hair, I am not tied to any style.

I'm natural and I've learned that a lot of people who are natural really don't know how to properly care for their hair to keep styling and maintence time to a minimum. I tried so many different methods and finally came across a few stylists who taught me how easy natural hair can be. I don't spend more than 2 hours on my hair every week. I like that people are going back to relaxers because I like seeing the variety but it makes me sad seeing so many people complain about natural hair being difficult and how they aren't able to figure it out. I wish I could teach everyone that natural hair really is not difficult and how to take better care of their hair in general relaxed or natural. We just have to remember the basic principles of haircare. And I think we do an unnecessary amount of things to our hair thinking we have to to make it healthy. But it really doesn't take all that. Hair is a lot easier than we make it.

I'm natural and plan to stay that way. My hair has never been as long as it is now while relaxed. Detangling my BSL natural hair takes around 10-12 minutes on wash day but I have fine, type 4a hair. Because of my fine, average density hair wearing a relaxer doesn't work well, it ends up looking too thin and flat with no body. When I was relaxed I never needed regular strength relaxers, they were too strong; mild strength was used and they didn't need to be left in long. Also I never flat ironed my hair like you're doing now, because it was already straight, I just blow dried it. I could never understand the fear of rain while relaxed because getting my hair wet didn't cause an issue. I now know that coarse hair behaves very differently than fine hair. I wish that I had coarse hair, then I probably would relax. Your hair is beautiful!

I transitioned for 11 months and was natural for 4 years and 7 months. I recently just Tex-Laxed in December because I had SO MANY single strand knots and it took so much length away. I also feel being in the military natural hair is a struggle to maintain, personally. I had 4a/4b hair but wearing a bun all day and barely being able to switch up looks was slightly damaging and I feel my hair was not growing and retaining length as it could. Now that I am relaxed I feel free to do different styles without it taking ALL day and see truly when my ends need extra care. Now I’m on a journey to grow my hair and keep it as healthy as possible while being relaxed. Which I think should be easy since I’ll just apply my natural hair care to my relaxed hair.

I just relaxed my hair last week at the salon. I have no regrets and like others I was just over it. I just became tired of wash days, my hair took a whole day in a half to dry, it was hard to braid, twist bc it was soo thick...4c. No matter what product I used it didn't feel soft and would just dry up quickly. When I silk pressed and I sweat or any type of humidity my hair would puff back up which was a waste of time, energy and money. It was a journey and good while it lasted. Now I just love my relaxed hair and using a lot of your tips to manage and take care of it so it can continue to flourish.

Beautiful hair, you are the Queen of healthy relaxed hair. I thought this video was interesting, I agree that usually people stop relaxing their hair because something happens to it. I stopped relaxing my hair over a year ago as I noticed that my hair was beginning to lose it's density after being relaxed for 20 years, my scalp was extremely dry and my edges kept thinning out (due to a bad relaxer in my teens and numerous scalp burns over the years). I loved my long relaxed hair but it was the right time to stop for me. I do think naturals are more educated about looking after their hair in general, therefore it's much easier to switch back to relaxers with this knowledge and more product choice.

I just stumbled upon your channel and love your content!! I think part of the issue is the natural hair community frowned upon women who used heat and other alternatives to help manage their hair. I made the decision to go relaxer free back in 2012. It wasn’t a easy decision because I knew I wasn’t going to be a typical natural ( not into doing twist outs and things of that nature). I knew I would probably wear my hair in a straight style most of the time. I feel like the natural hair community frowned upon naturals who use heat or keratin treatments. I didn’t give in to the notion of no heat, because I needed a simple hair routine that didn’t require a lot of maintenance. Every summer since I went relaxer free I get an amino acid treatment by Design Essentials to help me maintain my hair during the summer months (don’t have to worry about my hair reverting other frizzing up). My hair has thrived being a straight haired natural ( my stylist said I have a lot of hair strands, but I also have fine textured, low porosity hair). I also dealt with a uterine fibroid and read some research that suggested chemical relaxers can be correlated with the growth of fibroids. So that’s why I probably won’t relax again. However, no one should be judged for doing so.

I hadn’t even thought about going back to natural hair until I started watching your videos about a week ago. Your hair is absolutely beautiful! Today is my eight year nappiversary! It’s been interesting but I’m only just now beginning to really take care of my hair properly and consistently. Like literally I started two-three week ago. It’s amazing that I already see a lot of improvement in my hair. You touched on that point in the video - no matter what, you must take care of your hair. That, for black women, is the problem. I don’t think most of us want to take care of our hair. There’s a tendency to purchase products, use chemicals, install hairstyles, etc in the belief that those will replace day to day care like you do. We look at white women and envy what appears to be wash-and-go hair while ignoring that almost all of them do daily hair care. Washing your hair and combing it is care. How many of us do that even weekly? I know I don’t. So, I guess I say to myself that I shouldn’t look at your hair and expect to have the same results. I have to access my own hair, my lifestyle and honestly my own reality before making a decision. Neither path is really easier. It just has to be the path you want to walk. If people are going back to relaxers, I hope they are doing it with eyes wide open. You still have to take care of your hair.

I want to go back to being relaxed so bad! My hair was longer and much healthier. I feel like the growth has been stagnant ever since I went natural about 4 years or so ago. (Been relaxed since about 12 years old with SUPER thick hair) if I don’t see any growth by the summer I’m probably going back. Thanks for sharing!

Exhaust all options but waiting until Summer is a good option. By then you should notice if there’s been a significant change in progress. Why did you decide to go natural 4 years ago?

Hi Val! Glorious hair as usual! Yes, I’ve noticed the wave and also a part of it. I’ve also mentioned on my channel how over it I was and how I was over it. I hope everyone does what they need to!

I use the same relaxer as you, I relaxed for the first time in late November after 5 years natural. Honestly your website is my bible thus far and I feel like being natural taught me SO MUCH about how to properly care for hair, so I’m confident in my new relaxed journey. Now I know how to properly moisturize/seal, detangle, maintain protein balance, protective style etc. I just couldn’t keep up with my super thick and coily hair anymore. My wash days are much easier now!

I was natural from about 2014-15 axp until last August ... my relaxed hair is much more easier to maintain. However i am almost 6 months into my relaxer and i haven't done a touch up yet!! I love your videos on your relaxed hair journey and always look forward to watching. Be blessed always!!

I just found your channel yesterday. I'm just browsing through and I know I've found the right one to help me during my transition back to relaxed hair. I was natural for 10 years and got a relaxer a year ago. I went natural mainly because I couldn't afford salon visits when the '07 recession hit. I enjoyed the journey and just learning about my hair and how to care for it. My hair had always been done by someone else until I did that big chop! I'm on a personal style journey now ro get out of a style rut, and I relaxed my hair again to get out of a hair rut. I too am over the grief that black women constantly give each other about hair. I've recently wondered if women of other races do that to each other!

@@HairliciousInc Thanks I plan on enjoying it :) I'm in a situation where I might have to do my own relaxer until a stylist I'm comfortable with comes along. I'm a military spouse in Germany so people are always moving in and out. I've been waiting over a year! I've never done my own relaxer before so if you could do a video with tips for doing a relaxer at home that would be great.

Ok I just got the time to look through more of your videos and I saw your relaxer routine. I'm defintely going to go with the ORS line in addition to ordering the other products. I have never heard of protecting the previously relaxed hair prior to relaxing before!

I’m currently relaxed and this is what I’m using on relaxer day: Motions regular relaxer, Motions active moisture neutralizing shampoo, Keracare curlessence moisturizing shampoo, Aphogee 2 min reconstructor, TGIN honey miracle hair mask, Suave coconut milk conditioner and Redken mega soft hydra melt and ORS olive oil moisturizer. Keeping natural hair in a humid climate was enough to make me turn back to being texlax and a BKT to get the bone straight look. No more single strand knots. I loved my 3c/4a curls, but not the single strand knots and battling humidity for any look I tried. My hair seemed to be infested with single strand knots as a natural 😂

I've been natural since 1989 when it WAS NOT trendy, cool, etc. Watching your video makes me want to relax my hair. I've done all of the natural styles out there to be done in that 30 year span of time...I'm done! When relaxed my hair WAS NOT damaged, it was actually healthy like yours. I couldn't figure out the excessive split ends and loath single strand knots which are a curse. The knots are the reason for the split ends and I found myself having to cut more hair because of them. Yup, I'm relaxing for sure. Thanks for the video and discussion. Blessed be.

Hello SUNSHINE! Very interesting indeed that naturalistas are reverting. It's simple..manageability! And thanks to hair gurus like you Dominique Baker and Colleenmariet (you are my 3 favs), you have showed us that relaxed hair can be healthy. You have helped to educate us and have introduced us to SO MANY WONDERFUL products that will help your hair at any stage (texlax, relax, transitioning, natural). I love that now I only relax my hair 3 times a year and the hair doesn't have t be BONE STRAIGHT. I have trained my stylist (it was a struggle but she finally got it!). Texturize is a beautiful thing. It really is having the best of both worlds. Whatever anyone decides, it's a process and a journey. Hair is hair...period! :)Love the content....keep it coming! Request: Can you deep dive into the Olapex 3 and how you apply it? Thanks lovely. xoxo
