An HD reconstruction of Adult Swim's 60-second TV spot for it's original airing of FLCL (aka Fooly Cooly or Furi Kuri) back in 2003. Classic anime from Gainax and Production IG. Be sure to watch this one in 720p!
Watching this as a 9 year old boy back in 2003 is an experience that can never be relived again. So many questions I had watching this, some still haven't been answered lol. Still a fantastic anime after all this time.
I remember I saw this promo around the first time it aired and I was hooked that very same night when it premiered. Somehow, the American dub perfectly encapsulated the mood and tone of the show, which is super rare.
I expected nothing special. I didn't fully appreciate the promo, and my brothers and I didn't pay very much attention to the first episode when it aired. By the time Haruko showed up, FLCL had our full attention and basically became our favorite show.
Exactly. Although some will say "English dub sucks" or "I prefer subbed," they fail to notice how - in this case - FLCL's English dub seemed to have closely resembled the original's mood and tone really well (albeit not word for word).
FLCL is like being thrown into a mosh pit by accident. You don't know what's going on and it goes by so quickly you don't even bother questioning it. But when you eventually leave the chaos and pure what-the-hell-is-going-on-moment, you'll look back on it with great memories. And probably be scarred for life. In short, FLCL is what would happen if you took a video of pure randomness that defined the internet put it in anime form and just go, Oh well and let it loose.
Nah, it's about puberty. Once you figure that out all the pieces sort of fall into place. There's nothing random about the sexual innuendo or that our young protagonists brain is a portal to other worlds, for example. Still one hell of a visionary ride though.
I remember catching this promo back in 2003, I was 11 years old and this aired a little bit before I was supposed to go to bed. However, I was way too interested in whatever this was and luckily I had the entire upstairs to myself and my step-brother's room had a TV in it, (my step dat had joint custody so he wasn't there half the time), so I snuck into his room and stayed up late, watching TV at a super low volume and loved it. FLCL has become my favorite anime of all time and I think a part of that has to do with who I was at the time, so you could say that this promo changed my life.
Did the Math. We're the same age lol. When this came out we we're in the 6th grade (if Yu didn't get held back). & The show lined up perfectly with our age group. & I often say this. It seems like everything was catered to our age group. If you were born between id say 91-94 there were a lot of shows on Tv reflective of our age. Rugrats came out when we were like between age 4-5. Got a lil older then Shows like Rocket Power came out 5- 6 years later.. Kids on the show were about the same age as us & there's many more examples of this.
This was my childhood. I was around the same age as the Protagonist when this released. I actually learned about this series through a magazine called "Newtype" the art style was like no other at the time and it was very different. That magazine had postcards.
I remember watching this when I was 13-14 back in like 03'-04' late at night. It was like having a badass fever dream. That theme will forever be in my head. I couldn't tell you the plot to any of the episodes I watched but they were always crazy and cool. I get a weird nostalgia feeling when I see old episodes.
God, this show more than any show I’ve seen just reflected that feeling of growing up so perfectly. I feel lucky to have seen it when I did, I’m not sure it would hit the same way for someone growing up now it was a different time and a different feeling.
For some reason, watching FLCL made me feel weirdly nostalgic. It's like how I feel when I imagined what I felt when I was really young and watching cartoons on my small CRT TV. Really confusing, but enjoyable nonetheless
This was my favorite anime of all time when I watched it on Adult Swim 15+ years ago. Since then I’ve yet to see one capable of knocking it out of that spot.
As a 2 year old watching [as] id wake up to the cowboy bepop outro, then watch flcl. Then go to sleep after Big O.. Didnt realise they were real for another 10 YEARS! I though flcl was some fever dream i had as a child!
I moved from America to England back in 2003. Came back one summer to visit my mother and thought I would put Toonami on for nostalgia sake. First episode played and I was hooked for the rest of the night and remember getting sad when I saw the 6th episode was called the FLCLimax. Been a fan ever since 👍🏼
I didn't watch much of Toonami Midnight run back then especially when they extended it on weeknights because of school and because of church (Friday night before Sabbath) so I never saw the original promo for FLCL. For most of the 00's I escaped the hype of the anime. It's only within the last decade where the internet has introduced me to Gainax and its animes, particularly this one. Even though I only watched it in the 2010s as a rerun on the new Toonami, I could tell it oozes with adolescent nostalgia, I was hooked and was then disappointed with FLCL Progressive
Justin Prather and they got everything production ig will be doing it however toonami will be co-producing it and they got the original Japanese band 'the pillows' to do the soundtrack but the difference of season 2 and 3 is that it will involve a girl and will suffer the same thing like naota did
I watched little anime around the time this was airing. I didn’t hate anime but I didn’t understand what I was watching unless it had action (DBZ, Inuyasha etc.) so when this aired and during the first episode, I didn’t understand anything or enjoy it very much…and yet I could not stop watching. I didn’t get that exciting vibe but yet it was still crazy enough to keep me tuned, and as the episodes progressed I couldn’t help but want more, then it was over. Even when it ended I still didn’t get the full excitement I usually got, but this did open my eyes to pursue other genre’s and step out of my comfort zone. It was weirdly enjoyable and watching bits here and there today, I cannot thank this show enough for existing. Always a great time to watch it for some wacky shenanigans.
Holy shit, bringing me baaack!I remember staying up really late (sometimes all night) with a buddy and we'd watch the shit until it stopped airing and went to regular tame cartoons. Good times with good anime lol
@kyle11606 If you think they left a lot of questions unanswered then you didn't really get the depth of the series. It's all about Naoto's coming-of-age. If you look at it from that perspective and consider all the symbolism and what each character represents(e.g. Haru = puberty/the craziness of teenagedom, atomsk = manhood, etc.) then you'll realize the ending was very fitting. I suggest you go look up some analyseses (spelling?) of the show. Understanding the symbolism makes FLCL much better
This is one of the few anime that Adult Swim showed that honestly seems like it could have been an adult swim original with the style of humor and bizarreness to it like the shows that become later like Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Squidbillies
Am I the only one who prefers the English Dub over the Japanese dub? Not saying the Japanese dub is bad, but to me this dub just feels more natural to me, compared to other dubs were the voice acting just feels so wooden.
90% of the anime i watch is in japanese beacuse the voice acting tends to be better when compared. However when i compared the two for this show i had to stick with the English Dubs. Like you said, it feels more natural and the acting is better.
"Best Anime Music - FLCL - Advice(FLCL Arrange Version)" if you never got your answer. Unfortunately, only the very last bit is the part you probably associate with Sonic Adventure, but Pillows are always bangers
@@a.c.7573 back in the early 2000s dubs might’ve been goofy asl yeah they have improved somewhat but FLCL is one the earliest shows that shows English dubs can be on par or better than the OG recording.
