While I dont disagree , as soon as he said under the bridge, californication, I said nope give it away. But let's face it. It really depends when one grew up with these guys and which era represents the peppers to them. For me its mothers milk to one hot minute. For others it may be different. If I had to pick one it would be a song called 'what it is' on the album out In LA. It has a little of everything
Alex Famie that’s true. I started hearing RHCP a few years ago and my favorite albums are Stadium Arcadium, I’m with you and The Getaway the most recent ones basically
@Eliot I think "Under The Bridge" is everyone's favorite, no one can remake that song. Dosed showed their maturity and diversity with lyrics and their sound.
I have said so many times about scar tissue that I am sure there are better songs that have been written, but this is the perfect song as far as the sentiment, the lyrics, the delivery and the context go.
Flea wasn't a big fan of BTW since the mixing (and possibly the songwriting in general) basically made his bass contributions almost inaudible. It is very much a sound determined by John. Flea was about to quit the band when John apologized to him. All that doesn't take away from the beautifully written songs and beautifully created soundscapes on the album, but I doubt Flea would ever pick one of BTW's songs as his favorite or "rhcp essence"
I’m partial to “Easily” of Californication. The energy in the verses is intoxicating. The melodies in the choruses are beautiful and powerful. The outro is so atmospheric. My favorite RHCP songs are always on rotation, but Easily never leaves the top 5.
@@Jsh0w That song is just full of transcendent guitar melodies and vocal hooks, not to mention great lyrics and a driving groove - definitely one of their best.
John Frusciante thank you! I was just about to comment the exact same thing. The live version at the castle in Sloane I believe, is so epic the way John Frusciante taps the fret board... cheers from Florida.
The best version, for me is la Cigale 2006... it does trump Slane Castle. That song is open to interpretation and it's a favourite of John's because of that... (repeated 4 chords essentially - so much to play with!) But with Cigale you can just tell that John is feeling IT, with every note. It's a beautiful thing.
Sir Psycho Sexy defines RHCP's genre and style in 8 minutes IMO. It has all these brilliant sections of rap and ballad and classic outros and what not.
i have been listening to that song for a year now, trying to figure out all lyrics, (I have loved them since 2012) and I can only memorize the first 2 minutes xD
My favourite RHCP song will always be Dosed. It's my first memory of any piece of music, my mother always listened to it when I was like 4 years old. I hadn't heard it in over 10 years until I went through her music collection and listened to all the old records we used to listen to together. I teared up like a little kid when I heard it again.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers purists not gonna like this choice cause their god Frusciante wasn't on it LOL but I love it! The whole album is criminally underrated!
I’m a red hot purist and it’s just stupid to say that aeroplane is not a masterpiece. One hot minute it’s just amazing and yes, Frusciante will always be brilliant but Navarro did a fucking great job and he is a wonderful guitar player too!
Can't stop is the clear choice that culminates the Chili Peppers. Their rock/funk with some heart and catchy lyrics, everyone knows it but I don't blame them for choosing something else.
And a friggin crime how it was ripped off by, come my baby, come come by baby, your my butterfly, sugar, baby. That just stabs me in the heart whenever I hear it, brutal.
@@DerekSeguin also on the same album John played the intro to sweet child of mine for a bar. Not sure who recorded it first though. Punk rock classic I think.
Been a RHCP fan for over 30 years, my favorite band, and I always loved Knock Me Down off Mother’s Milk. Soul to Squeeze is another. Dosed, I Could Have Lied, Nevermind, Love Trilogy, Show Me Your Soul, and every damn song they make is the best.
Wet Sand for me... but it's a really hard question, i mean, every song is very different from each others and that makes this band just perfect... (also i love Parallel Universe, Can't Stop and Snow)
Can’t Stop will always be my favorite I think. That riff was literally the reason I picked up a guitar. There are so many close seconds though, like Under the Bridge, Scar Tissue, Zephyr Song, This Velvet Glove, Snow, Soul to Squeeze........ dammit I love this band. Lol
No one has 'Otherside' for their favourite? It has some of Anthony's best lyrics and really awesome production value overall. Not to mention the melody is also fucking great
Otherside is an amazing song and is easily one of my favorites, but if you're talking about a production value in terms of sound quality (at least that's the way I interpreted it), then you're wrong. Californication the album is infamous for its extremely compressed sound and is considered to be one of the biggest victims of the loudness war. The worst part of it is that it's produced by the very same Rick Rubin who also produced Blood Sugar Sex Magik, which in my opinion is one of the BEST sounding albums of all time. Ironic, huh?
one of my favorites is “nobody weird like me” ive seen them twice and their shows just blow me away like no other band ive ever seen and ive been to a million concerts in my life
Soul to Squeeze for me stands out as my favourite, which is odd because it is kind of a stand alone track. Coffee shop is the most band defining song in my opinion :0)
They don't seem to play any stuff from The Dave Navarro era! Half of One Hot Minute was fantastic, half not as fantastic,Coffee Shop and Walk About are certainly worth making any of their sets... Also Could have lied, great song... The play more of their mainstream later stuff these days... Pity, the were an awesome funk band until the mid 90s.
You got me with soul to squeeze... Love it soooo much.. I guess I first discovered it watching the documentary about how BSSM was made.. Such lovely piece.. I secretly wished he would name this one.. But at least you did, thanks 😉
“Give it away” is a good answer, even before i listened to their music in depth (beyond radio play) thats the song I most associated them with. Its just got that certain general energy that they seem to convey on stage no matter what song they’re playing.
Putting the jaw harps on that track was a stroke of genius. There's something about that TWANG BOING DING that just fits in so perfectly with the vibe.
Tried to like this comment more than once but couldn’t. I can’t believe he wrote that about Sinead O’Conner. Extremely unlikely couple back then and she seems a little butch these days. Still one of their most timeless tracks! Learned to play it immediately after it came out and it never gets old.
my favorite chili's song is Road Trippin' but literally i said to myself that give it away best encapsulates their sound and who they are so when flea said it i was like "WAIT WHAT"
10. Under The Bridge. 9. By The Way. 8. Dani California. 7. Road Trippin'. 6. Scar Tissue (Slane Castle version) 5. Can't Stop. 4. Snow (Hey Oh). 3. Californication. 2. Otherside. 1. I Could Have Lied. If experience has shown me anything, is that no person in the world has a Top10 RHCP songs that is exactly the same of any other person's.
That’s a great list. Mine would have a lot of those songs, plus maybe Sir Psycho Sexy, Sojl to Squeeze, something off One Hot Minute which I love (maybe Aeroplane or Transcending) and something from the old days like Behind the Sun.
1. Easily 2. Tear 3. Wet sand 4. Nobody weird like me 5. Californication 6. Mommy where's daddy 7. One way traffic 8. Did I let you know 9. Sir psycho sexy 10. Around the world
My favorite can vary with my mood but "Tell Me Baby" ranks very high. The video is such a joy to watch too. The whole of the californication album. Coffee Shop...man, love listening to RHCP!
My favorites are Scar Tissue and Porcelain. But there are so many great ones. Snow, By the Way, Under the Bridge, Californication, Dani California, Can’t Stop, The Zephyr Song, Dosed, Breaking the Girl,
She looks to me, make you feel better, desecration smile, wet sand, especially in Michigan, Charlie (most epic ending), dosed, don’t forget me (especially the live version at slane castle), warm tape, midnight, power of equality/if you have to ask (gotta hear em back to back), righteous and the wicked, BSSM, my lovely man, yertle the turtle (there’s a primo live version from the old days with a lot of improv), and true men don’t kill Coyotes. Those are their best “non singles” from their most cited albums imo. Best single though? Hmm.. give it away does bump. So does Dani California.
@@enamvt5599 And..to make things worse..not only is it about his ex..he has also recently remarried..so his current wife probably won't like it..unless he dedicates it to this wife or something.
Blood Sugar Sex Magic album blew me away back in early 90’s. It was really cool and quirky, but it had an edge and it was really different from what was happening in music at the time. Although Ive always liked most all of their music, Ive never been attached to anything they put out in the last 2 decades.
All the song you guys mention in coments are anthems to me and my childhood, such great song.... lately i've been hearing eddie and tippa my tongue so many times per day... im so exited john is back (l)
I love ALL of their music but Otherside is my most favorite song ever created by anybody. I don’t even know why. I just can’t explain how it makes me feel. Especially when that FruSolo drops.
Dude, WTF? "Nevermind" from Freaky Styley says it all. That is THE quintessential RHCP song, hands down! They need to come out with a remake of it with up-to-date band references. That would be awesome!
@@cm4133 maybe i have a different view of them ? started listening to them in 2017 and have been throug all of it. but just seeing the darkness behind it all is something i see.... same reason i reckon ride on is my favorite acdc song
RHCP played Yertle the Turtle live with Josh Klinghoffer couple of years ago..so if someone stuck with them during this era they might know it. But John doesn't play it usually so I guess he changed the answer.
A back-catalog selection which I'd like to submit as THE quintessential RHCP song is "Nobody Weird Like Me" -- close second, and also one from the vaults, would be "Knock Me Down"
Chima Idigo: Actually, quite a few songs from the Mother's Milk to One Hot Minute period address the band's grieving process for Hilel. I don't believe, however, that "Knock Me Down" was amongst them, but I'm not going to say it absolutely isn't, either. According to my understanding, it was more about their anti-ego philosophy -- or their attempt to come off as such.
Flea is my idol and inspired me to pick up bass and finally release my debut album. My favourite won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but ‘tell me baby’ makes me more happy than any of their other songs and I like a lot of their songs. Anyone agree with my choice?
0:52 I once said I vibrated in a 4th grade essay. I was talking about fighter jets, like in Iron Eagle or Top Gun. I used the cockpit vibration as a system waring fault and finctionally applied that to my body in writing. I thought I was the only person to ever say it like that! LOL!
The entire By The Way album is gorgeous. I think all the songs are expressed from the POV of something which can both be a beautiful girl and the higher self all at the same time.
