Fletch is excited about his latest acquisition, and it’s not a project car. This 1979 Lincoln Continental Town Car is as close to new as you can get, which is unusual for Fletch. It even came with a trunk load of original spare parts. This car is the type you can simply turn the key and enjoy.
It has always been Fletch's goal to own the big three iconic American cars: a Cadillac, a Chrysler Imperial, and a Lincoln Continental. Fletch recalls owning a '77 Silver Monarch LTD and having to sell it due to business commitments at the time. He has regretted that decision ever since, but now he has all three of the big marques; that won't happen again.
His new 1977 Lincoln is in magnificent condition, with not a rattle or squeak to speak of. Presented beautifully in Jubilee Gold, this model was the last of the full-size luxury cars manufactured in the US. Ten years ago, Fletch first spotted the Lincoln Continental Gilmore Museum in the US. He was captivated by its bold styling and build quality. The car was also featured in a past episode of Classic Restos filmed at the Museum.
Fletch also reflects on an episode filmed with another Lincoln fan, Wes from Michigan, with his black 1970 Lincoln Mark 3.

Great car Fletch. I have a cream 1979 Lincoln Town Car and can attest to them being one of the smoothest cars ever made. 👍

Good job Fletch I’m a big fan of the old Ford Fairlane LTD - I’m told in the early days. It stood for Lincoln Type Design Consumers thought it meant limited ….. and then by the 1980s ford sort of went with the flow and de-defined LTD as meaning limited for limited edition…….. But as always, it depends how you talk to……! P6 - LTD is the only way to fly baby

Having owned both, the American Lincoln does trump the Australian car. It has too - our P6 was based off these. The American attention to detail and refinement really is amazing. Like I said, the Lincoln is "the real McCoy" ... The American Lincoln was also never fully appreciated in Australia, as we never sold them here. The P6 was an amazing car, but the extra track, wheelbase & additional 400kg of the Lincoln is just that step up. Cheers & thanks for watching, Fletch 👍

🙋‍♂️FLETCH,FIRST TIME WATCHING, AND I HAD TWO 1979 TOWN CARS, The first was the same color,I bought in 1980 and drove it for nine years and 230,000 miles and it was comfortable and safe for my family of four boys!… I bought a second with the moonroof and the deluxe interior as the second car🤗… In 1976 I had a triple white 1972 Imperial with all the options😁💚💚💚

I owned a baby blue 1978 Lincoln Town Car and a 1979 Lincoln Town Car Collectors Series in dark blue. Arriving anywhere in these behemoths was always an event. I feel so fortunate to have owned such beautiful cars. Unfortunately, they rusted INCREDIBLY!!! I miss them so much and wish I had them back. I would choose a brand new Lincoln from 1979 than any super expensive or exclusive car made today. Incredibly, I still dream about them, to me, in my opinion only, the most beautiful car ever made. God has been so good to me.

I've been looking at these for a LONG TIME Fletch! North eastern australia has been a sanctuary for these big american Lincolns! I want an EMERALD GREEN metallic lincoln continental 1978 model. Saw an unconverted one (PRE COVID) go for $20,000 with low miles.

I began selling real estate in Grand Rapids, Michigan in 1979. The parking lot had seven Lincolns in front of the business. I got to ride in them when we would tour our new listings. They were beautiful care. My broker had a dark blue 79 like yours. One of the younger, single salesmen had a triple black Mark IV (if my memory serves me right). He was a lady's man and made quite the impression!

Congrats on your purchase Fletch. The styling was unique but the smooth ride was by far the best ride in the industry. GM and Chrysler were great as well but there can only be one "Best" and the Lincoln had the best ride. Enjoy that great car from yesteryear. Mike

Half your luck, mate. What a ripper of a car, which I too have long admired. It is one of 'end of an era vehicles' Fletch, and I am sure it will bring you many years of cruiser delight. And as for your LTD, what a scorcher for beauty. If they are sound mechanically, the engine is always the least stressed part of the automobile.

I saw one of these at a car show on the Gold Coast about a month ago. You just don't appreciate the size of these until you see one in the flesh I don't think. Everything about it was massive, thick lounge like seats, fat door trims, armrests, bumpers and a flight deck for a bonnet. It probably qualified for it's own postcode, but for all it's size it still positively oozed luxury, style and individuality. I liked how the knife edged and straight through styling gave a nod to the 1961 Continental as well. Nice car Fletch and thanks for sharing this beauty with us.

The 85mph speedometer was mandated by law in the US. The theory was that it would make it appear as though you were driving faster, so people would therefore drive a bit slower, and save some fuel in shortage times. The manufacturers would not have put an 85mph speedo in any car if they had the choice! Safe to say it didn’t work anyway and the law was repealed

Yes, the 85 mph speedo was mandated, bu they forgot to mandate that that's where the needle had to stop! I remember renting something back then (it was a Cutlass Supreme) in which the needle got to 85 and then kept right on going until it pointed to D, which is where I stopped ryng to see how far it would go.

The parking spaces in unit blocks are quite small these days, so this 1979 Town Car would require 2 spaces at the back of the parking lot. It would need to be parked on an angle to keep the nose from pultruding out. The other thing to consider with these is, the Navman would display the wrong suburb. The front end usually gets to the next suburb 5 minutes before the rest of the car arrives 🙄 Gotta give it to Fletch, he must have big balls to take on this beautiful and highly desirable monstrosity. I love his taste and passion for Chrysler's and these giant iron horses, it speaks volumes about status as an Alpha Male, he's certainly no sissy

This car is far from pristine. Chips in the paint on the front, scuffing at the rear door, the steering wheel shows significant aging and dash has some fake covering on it.

@classicrestostv1fletch764
@classicrestostv1fletch764 3 месяца назад
Hi Bradley. Thank you for your comments, but they would be even more appreciated if they were accurate 😁Goodness me, are you joking? I bought this vehicle because (sorry to you) it is a pristine example - not far from. Please appreciate I get to see many vehicles in my career. You may have seen a solidified bug on front, which I doubt, but I can assure you, there is not ONE stone chip on this car. I was honest enough to point out the trim scuffing - it's minor anyway after 45 years, and a polisher has already told me that it could be made back into a mirror in 5 minutes. Wear on the steering wheel? Bradley, if you know your Lincolns, the ends of the horn bars can crack and sometimes break, my wheel is again like brand new... And as for the aging dash? you have the wrong car. That dash is like brand new with a (fake) carpet protective cover across the top that came with the car from the USA. It's a dash cover. I don't mind criticism, but how about base it on accuracy. Tends to be the Aussie way with a lot doesn't it? try knock it, before compliment it. Thanks for watching Bradley. Cheers Fletch 👍

Mum and dad got a brand new 1971 LTD, and later on, l went for my licence in it. The instructor said to take it around the block and then go past the golf course. I think he just wanted to go for a cruise, haha, and he was impressed that a 17 year old could handle a tank, haha. You need more hoists, Fletch 😂

Thanks for sharing. What a magnificent car. I've been right onto those Lincoln's on youtube recently then suddenly you turn up with this land-yacht. I fully appreciate your comment about noobody gives new cars a second look. How true. But really, what's there to look at these days. How many different Teslas have you seen .. two maybe ?? It was 1967 I think and I went up the Brisbane Valley with a mate whose family owned a local Holden dealer. At their home, in the barn, they had two brand new HR Holden Premiers with 186S and four on the floor. They weren't released yet and so had to be kept away from the public. How awesome to see that. How exciting to see a new model .... but not now.

By '79, the 400 was down to 159hp, about 50 horsepower less vs the single exhaust 460, and in a Mark V where you could order the 460 with dual exhaust, it's about 70 hp less if so equipped. In '79, Lincolns with the quadrasonic 8 track had an electronic radio. Your car likely originally came with the cheaper stereo only 8 track player, which matches up with the stereo demo tape shown. Along the way, so the dash panel wouldn't have to be changed, someone upgraded the radio to what you have now (which also plays the special quadraphonic 4 channel surround sound tapes - such tapes have two "programs" instead of four because four of the eight "tracks" are being used at once to provide the discrete four channel sound vs just two needed for stereo) with a head unit that would have been available in Lincoln from 1976-78 and maintained the dash panel for a dial and pointer radio. Great condition...enjoy.

My Dad bought a 79 Town Car brand new at a dealership in Massachusetts. Every box was checked including the moon roof. I drove it many times, and found myself having to move the steering wheel early, because it took a second for the rest of the car to catch up. 😂 It was best as a highway cruiser, but you couldn’t beat the incredible comfort it offered. Made several trips from Boston to Miami and back.

You can see how soft it is by the way it bounces ever so lightly as it comes off the truck. It is surprising how relatively space inefficient the American luxury cars of the time were more broadly.
