How to correctly adjust the FlexRadio AGC-T control. This is the most powerful receiver adjustment available.

More details are in the SmartSDR Manual section 15.1 AGC Threshold
Automatic Gain Control (AGC) is a feature which automatically adjusts the Slice Receiver’s audio gain (volume) based on the strength of signals in the receiver’s passband filter. The goal of AGC is to amplify weak signals and attenuate strong signals so that they all lie within a comfortable listening range.
The receiver Automatic Gain Control Threshold (AGC-T) can be adjusted for optimum performance in noisy or quiet environments. The AGC-T sets the maximum gain applied under any circumstances. Since the noise floor is relatively constant on a given band at a given time, the AGC can be adjusted using the threshold control so that the AGC never applies gain to noise, but it will apply gain to signals just out of the noise. In doing so, the AGC can reduce the level of noise you hear, and help signals pop out of the noise.
The AGC system in SmartSDR is a dual track system, meaning that it can track both slow and fast increases in signal strength, making appropriate gain correction decisions in the presence of each. The speed of the AGC (FAST, MED, SLOW) determines how quickly or slowly the AGC recovers after attenuating a strong signal. You can easily hear this by tuning to a CW signal and going through the three settings. On FAST with a strong signal you can hear the gain pump up and down while on SLOW it recovers after a longer pause once the signal stops. When the signal stops, you will hear the noise floor increase as the gain returns.

Volume first then agc-t... I keep re-learning this every time I turn on this absolutely fantastic radio. Because when you do it backwards the distorted signals will remind you. Trust me. I know. :) 73 KD4SIR

Superb video as usual. Once you get into the habit of making a quick check of AGC-T after a band change or after a noticeable change in receiver noise, usually through a change in conditions, it becomes second nature. It may look an onerous or superfluous control to use but some initial concerted diligence at adjustment will reap rewards and then it becomes something that naturally is done while operating. The JTDX author also recommends not to turn off AGC when in FT8/4. He has proven with test .wav files that the optimum decoding comes from fast AGC and then having turned on in JTDX the setting AGCc - AGC Compensation. He stated 2-2-2017 : In fact AGCc function trying to reduce noise level at beginning and end of the interval so that it is equal to the noise at the signal reception. It is needed to provide correct operation of the correlation function being used in JTDX. While AGC being triggered very often on the HF bands AGCc functionality lets to decode more signals. 73 de Erik EI4KF / G0CGL

You would think with it being so important the Defaults would not be set to Unusable (60-70) Levels... Come on, Change the defaults to 40 so it's always OK.

It isn't that black and white, and that is why the range is what it is. There are situations where you need the full range.

Yuri UT4LW has added some interesting controls to SDC. One of which is automatic control of AGC-T. It works when the Skimmer is on and the control type is SmartSDR API. It dynamically adjusts AGC-T so that the receiver is always at optimum AGC-T for the prevailing conditions. How useful is this? Yuri tested it throughout a CW contest and rates it highly. I have been using it in everyday use - for example I am 20m CW and it is changing my AGC threshold between 47 and 52. Prior to this SDC feature I would have set AGC-T at 47 manually and not been too motivated to check or change it on 20m. I have to admit though that a manual recalibration of AGC-T right now would set it at 50 to 52, rather than my normal 47, such is my band condition. My receiver therefore does appear to be being dynamically optimized. The Skimmer can remain active even when the radio is in other modes so auto AGC-T can also be active in SSB and digital. The new SDC feature has some merit and is at least worth checking out by SDC users. It is version 17.1014 on the SDC website. 73 de Erik EI4KF.
