In this episode, the Roswell Flight Test Crew speaks with Arne Skjaerpe, the vice president for UAV operations at FLIR Systems about the Black Hornet: a tiny drone that can be carried and deployed by individual soldiers. The aircraft weighs just 18 grams and is available in “day” and “night” versions with different cameras. With a range of up to one mile, the Black Hornet provides a live video feed to the operator on a chest-mounted display. The total system, including two aircraft, a controller and the video screen weighs less than three pounds. The controller has been optimized for single-handed operation. The Black Hornet is a restricted product, and is only sold to agencies of friendly governments, such as: the military, law enforcement and firefighters.

With all due respect to the VP and the interviewer having mentioned tactical operation background. Some things that should have been asked were: What transmission system does it use? Is it WiFi? Is it OcuSync? Is it some other transmitter system that's worthy of its cost? ...Because if its WiFi, that 1mi range becomes 1/4mi range in an urban environment or even less the lower the altitude. Might as well throw money in the rubbish, if that's the case. Also what is its maximum velocity and ceiling? What is its crosswind stability capabilities? Flight time of X minutes at what power consumption rate? It is good technology and ideology. But the right questions need to be asked and the technology needs to be implemented for it to be practical.

startazz this was filmed at a convention and those guys are the kings of marketing wank. It is not about 'military grade' it is about size and weight. Smaller and lighter = wind problems. The only reason this project still exists is because FLIR bought Prox Dynamics for $134mil. That little drone package can cost $190,000. the industry knows full well they will not survive with those prices when the civilian market is kicking their ass. Israel for instance just bought 2 DJI mavericks for each company commander. The only downside is they don't have a secure connection or thermal.....yet.
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 7 лет назад
Good question... Given the environments and the missions that this platform is expected to be deployed in, I would think that a gentle breeze inhibiting flight operations would be a showstopper. After fighting in extremely rugged terrain for 15 years, I would hope that the US military and allied armed forces would want to make sure it could perform in real world environments before purchasing 4,000 of them -- which is what FLIR/Prox has sold so far... At the same time, I've never seen it fly myself, so I guess we don't really know.
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 7 лет назад
Hey, Taz! I've been thinking a lot about that myself... I've never seen one of these fly (yet, although hope springs eternal), but I'm guessing it must have GPS position hold, otherwise that little thumb controller would never, ever work. However, if you look at the GPS antennas that we're using in the civilian drone industry, they would occupy half the weight and space of the entire helicopter. So, clearly there are things happening inside the shell that we don't fully understand or appreciate. It would be interesting to learn more about its tolerance of wind -- or just see it fly in a windy environment.
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 7 лет назад
Where have you seen a price of $190,000 for these units? The highest price I've ever seen quoted is $50,000 for the full package... Admittedly, I'm still not going to run out and buy one at that price (even if they'd let me), but $200k seems pretty steep based on what I've heard. Also, I've heard that these things are unbelievably stealthy... Someone told me that the CEO of Prox Dynamics used to walk out on stage and start giving his speech, and there would be a Black Hornet hovering beside him but no one would even notice until he pointed it out... The Mavic would be a great platform for this sort of company/platoon level reconnaissance work (apart from the shortcomings you mentioned, of course), but you're going to know its there...

It's only sold to governments, but it's not hard to make your own. There are plenty of tiny quadcopters that give live video feed, have a range of miles, and can give the user situational awareness. Hell, a tiny airplane is great for that. It flies faster, stays up longer and is quieter.

He just hurt my feelings again, But I'm a Government of 1. I have been wanting one from day one. it would be the perfect off road drone. Small little space needed etc. DJI spark looks to be what we will get for the off road buggy but still this would be perfect. PLUS I like how he calls them sensors and not drones.
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 7 лет назад
It's interesting: "sensors" versus "drone." Off camera, he very specifically made a point of saying, "We call them sensors." Maybe in the military context, drone conjures up images of Predators and Global Hawks. Or, maybe they don't want to freak out the general public by discussing nearly silent, nearly invisible reconnaissance drones... I'd dearly love to have one myself, although in the absence of a gimbal, I'm not sure the video would be especially great from an aesthetic point of view. Still, a wicked piece of it -- no doubt!

Wouldn't you just Love to know what kind of electronics are used in these? :) These have been around for a nr. of years now, and I had expected this stuff to have trickled down the consumer level by now (maybe in a different package).. but Nope! Grrrr ;)
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947
@Roswellflighttestcrew1947 7 лет назад
Absolutely -- there has to be a lot going on inside that thin plastic shell that is unknown to those of us in the civilian drone industry. As I mentioned in response to an earlier comment, this thing must have GPS position hold to be flyable with that thumb pad -- but even the smallest GPS receiver available to us would use up a fair chunk of the space and weight inside that thing. So, there is clearly some next-level stuff happening here. It will be interesting to see if (or when) this starts to seep into the civilian market...
@DutchRC

There you go.. I don't really know how big/small GPS receivers in modern phones are by the way.. That market is a big driver in development of such electronics..

Its net but into world some wiz kid or toy maker will come out with a close model or better - the helicopter ideal is nice bur we only sell to police or Gov at times is ok but at others, it limits you sells, it limits the feedback for R&D Just look at computers and the small cheap UAV for kids at hallmark you can bet some 13-18-year-old kid who has been playing with computers and toy UAV units from the hobby store is close or has build units that make this look like the Model T in what it can do. or some knock-off will flood the world with units so cheap its not worth the cost The FLIR system is nice but like all things, it has its limits after all if the price was right who knows many units they could sell to people like hunters, Bigfoot hunters, private security services like at football games or NAS CAR along with schools were a teacher could run a quick check around the school grounds Thanks for posting nice peace

My drone(quad copter) goes almost a mile away...I live stream 1080p .... and it has a fancy carbon fiber chassis... I built it for $1200cad...including the transmitter and the VR goggles.. So what makes this thing so special to cost $50,000usd? I get that it's about 5x smaller than my drone...and it has thermal cameras in addition to the HD streaming.. But those few things add up to equal a cost over 50x that of a competitive racing drone? Crazy... I'd like to know more about exactly how much more advanced military technology is...what else they have access too.. but seriously what makes it so expensive? Shouldn't it be cheaper for the military if it is secret military technology? Sheesh..
