Florence Welch isn't Welsh she's English and was born in Camberwell north London, her mother though is from New York and as a result of that Florence has both British and American citizenship. She's amazing, the 21st century Kate Bush.👍
That song is probably more about imposter syndrome and the hardship that comes with making art. It is possible it also ties in with her soberity and her experience of creating all this during the pandemic. A lot of people immediately put all of Dance Fever into the "struggling with wanting to make babies / romantic relationships are hard" theme bucket (which she mentioned as being the inspiration for King), when she has broached many themes and topics over the years and has explained that this diversity of issues remains, especially for this album. Florence, as an artist and a person, deserves better than dumbing down everything to "I desperately need to make babies and have a boyfriend because I'm a woman and music gets in the way". And don't even get me started on the elephant in the room we barely talk about which is that she is a criminally underrated dance performer and choreographer as well as a well-read visual artist.
Florence is a London girl, English, not Welsh. Not that it would matter if she were Welsh, of course. As for American artists who would have the spine to do something as creative as this, I would suggest Childish Gambino (Donald Glover). I think "This Is America" was pretty bold from a content and creative perspective.
I can't say that i'm 100% sure, but the song is about how she can be the perfect girl for her boyfriend, but at the same time she's upset with it because she shouldn't have to BUT she can't help but BE that since she loves him so much. In another song Florence mentions arguing over having children and in her last album she says "oh we're just children wanting children of our own, i want a space to watch things grow" so this is a big deal. I think that's why when dancing looks like she's stabing her own womb. She wants to be a mother.
I don't think the song is at all about suicide. I think it's about risk and reward. It's about the sacrifice to meet your goals. Songwriting can be very releasing and rewarding, but those goals to become a musician you have to keep putting out music. You kind of have to indulge into dipping yourself back into old feelings or sometimes somewhat relish in the hurt to get to a point which is harmful to you even though you're not going out of your way to do it. So that becomes your vice. Your bottle, your cigarette. That what was so releasing to you ( songwriting ) and your goal that you're trying to rise you will release you but you may get hurt in the process. ( Metaphor for suicide. )
I think this single came after King because it sorta ties into where she left off on King. That song was about her not feeling like she could be a wife or a mother because it requires the sort of stability that she feels she can’t have without sacrificing her art. She goes back and forth within the song about what she would choose but at the end of King she says “I was never satisfied, it never let me go, just dragged me by my hair and back on with the show” she can’t bring herself to choose stability, even though she does feel that pull towards motherhood. This song embodies that instability and chaos that has its hold on her, in my opinion.
