This almost happened to us when we were on this type bridge .. suddenly the light and beeping came on and we already passed the part of no return so all we could do was smash to a crazy speed to get across to the other end before the opening. I recalled that scary moments and still traumatized me til today. First time this happened on these bridges and never again! IMO They really should have a light sensor for clearing off all people first or something before starting to open up for the boat.

When I was young (maybe 10) I was in FL. I always walked ahead of my group if I knew where I was going, and I ended up on the bridge before the bar came down. Honestly, I don't remember hearing a bell/warning or seeing lights, but I do remember feeling the bridge pull up while I was on it. Ran back to my group and had to jump the gap. My aunt grabbed and held me til it was over, and a bystander starting yelling at me for being stupid. I've been terrified of walking on bridges in general ever since!

And even before I fully understood how a person could have been on the bridge when it started to raise, I didn't blame the victim! Also, if it was the fault of the person controlling the bridge, I feel bad for them too. While they may be at fault, it was likely unintentional and will haunt them forever. I live in Chicago. I always walk across as fast as I can. The one on Michigan Ave is the better one, right by the Tribune building and NBC tower. People stop there to take pictures all the time. It's well lit at night, very busy, and the nicer bridge out of all of them. Less scary than the rest in my opinion. Maybe because it's surrounded by so much beauty. 😍 So I'm more relaxed on that bridge whether walking or driving. I definitely feel safer. I have no doubt that the moment I hear the warnings ⚠️ and see all the flashing lights, there's enough time to get off the bridge to safety. If you're seasoned, you can actually look up and see the bridge operator looking down at all the people trying to cross in time. Those guys are on their A game. But even so, I've been stuck at the crossing of the Congress bridge before behind the gates. It is quite a sight to witness the bridge raise in front of you. 😲 I've imagined being stuck at the top and not making it in time and my car sliding down backwards and getting stuck in the hinge opening. 😱 But, I think I would rather be in my car than on foot because it would be inevitable to not fall into the water. How to you position yourself on the way down to grab onto the ledge and then actually hang on? And you'd still need to be rescued BEFORE the bridge goes back down. Otherwise you're losing limbs or life or both. It would take a miracle of divine intervention to pull that off. This stuff is what nightmares are made of. So, I always proceed with caution over bridges.
