In this episode we look at the life of Corliss, our fictional girl who will guide us into her stitching life in 1870.
A wonderful blog that will enrich your knowledge of 19 c sewing is called "Two Threads Back". I highly recommend every post. twothreadsback.com/
We also discuss my WIPS and while discussing "The Old Scot" I mention Sara who can be found on Instagram @janesays8. She has inspired many of the adaptations I am making to this sampler as I stitch it to honor my father.
Further study of Scottish Schoolgirl Samplers can be done through the open access copy of "Remember Now Thy Creator". It is available for download at
books.socantscot.org/digital-b...
The featured quilt in this episode was inspired by Di Ford in the book “Primarily Quilts …2”. I have named mine "Strawberry Fizz with a Ginger Twist".
In this episode I also share the kits for trying English Paper Piecing for the first time to make two hexagon flowers. The tutorial will be available this week along with the kits. Sign up for my newsletter on my website www.susanstandleystitchintime.com to be the first to know about this and future announcements.

What a lovely Sunday morning with you, Susan. Your quilt is breathtaking. I. Can’t. Even. Wow! You have enabled me to purchase the paper piecing quilt for a wee dip of the toes into EPP. Loved meeting sweet Corliss. You are a treasure. Love and hugs.

Always a great day when I can start off watching one of your wonderful videos. I can't wait to learn more about Corliss. What a wonderful historical romp! That quilt!!! It's so happy... I love the fresh colors. You are such a master at it but I know it took years of practice. Your Old Scot makes me want to get it and kit it. It's going to be stunning and your personalization will put it over the top! Have a wonderful weekend and I hope you get lots of stitching time! 🌹

Hi Susan. I can't wait for the upcoming adventure with Corless and her sister. Your videos are so interesting and inspiring. I definitely want to participate in the EPP fun. I have been wanting to learn EPP for quite awhile. Your quilt is beautiful and the fussy cut blocks are wonderful. My name is already on the list for the scissors. Yay! Thanks for all you do for us. Susan, What a beautiful quilt , love the colors!! I am a pink ,green and brown fan as well ! I so relate to hoarding a piece of favorite fabric, and not wanting to cut into it!! Looking forward to seeing how your small finishes. Love hearing about Corlis’s journey. You should compile small journals of your individual girls and their stories ❤️

It says so much about your talent as a quilter that that is 'utilitarian' quilting! It's beautifully balanced and has a lot of visual interest within the limited color palette. Thank you for the kind words, and I can't wait to see what you do with the Scattered Seed chart - I bought the same one in January so at some point we'll have two different takes on it. Check out 2114 in d'Alger or Gobelins. I'm just looking at a screen so it may not be a true color representation at all, but your gorgeous fabric screams 2114 to me...

Thank you so much for watching Katie and I appreciate your kind comments. I am having fun playing with this little chart and could accessibly work on it all day, but too many other things are calling me! It will be fun to see what you do with it as well, I have a vision, but you never know if it’s going to turn out the way you think!

Hi Susan, I so enjoy your historical talks about quilting and stitching! (I'm the one who tapped you on the arm at The QA show last week). I really look forward to more about Corliss and her life. Although she is fictional, she lives in my mind as a real girl. (My dear friend, Lynn Wilder of Sew'n Wild Oaks blog is doing something similar to go along with her new Hearthstone line at Marcus Fabrics.) I'm both a long-time quilter and a not-so-long time stitcher. Since I learned to sew from my Lithuanian-tailor grandmother roughly 66 years ago, I can imagine how few tools she had, as Corliss did, but created beautiful treasures with them!

Oh thank you so much for introducing yourself and I hope next time our paths cross we can chat! I will look up Lynn Wilder and her stories. I have been following her fabric as it is such a lovely addition to what is available on the market. I loved hearing about your grandmother and her influence on you. Such powerful memories!!!

Susan…. The translation is : There is growth by swimming against the stream…. Referring to the annual migration of salmon up the river Tweed. In order to breed. Thanks for a lovely & resourceful video, as always you share volumes , & it’s appreciated. I live all things past, full of my historical journey, & building memories that will always be meaningful . I enjoy reading literature on the Italian embroidery 🧵, the immigrants that filled so many peoples homes… Italian, Irish, Scottish & a host of other European cultures. Our world 🌍 is very different now, culture of immigrants isn’t always forthcoming. Instead much violence… but I digress… Tatting, miniature crochet scraps, table runners etc, the time these women put into their work, under tough circumstances…. They are to be applauded. We are a spoiled generation, soooo much at our fingertips.Blessed …we are I hope going forward new stitching enthusiast will dig into the history. Your channel gives this challenge, it’s an encyclopedia of knowledge. My Fathers family were immigrants from Italy, My Moms Father from Brighton England, get Mum French/German…. I have a tatted bedspread ! It’s so beautiful… memories you can’t buy…♥️ Plenty of memories making homemade everything Italian..😊 yumm Stitching 🧵 is my solace….♥️ I have Sons so I pass on to them cooking skills… & all my Reproduction Samplers they have🌹 Look forward to your next videos… Blessed Easter Susan…

Oh I can’t thank you enough for that helpful translation!!!! I thoroughly enjoyed your story and learning about your history and background. Our ancestors are a part of our stitching somehow and we can thank them for their contributions that make what we do possible today! It gives our work so much meaning 😊. Thank you for watching!

Hi Vicky. I have been collecting fabrics for over 40 years! My collection comes from all over the world. I have been focusing on fabrics that have been reproduced from samples in 19 th Century quilts. I am trying to help people start their own collections with my Textile Interpreter Collection series. I really believe that having a large variety at your fingertips makes your projects so much more interesting to work on and beautiful to look at.
