Supports my book Fishing the Bucktail. Fishing tips for catching flounder or fluke on artificial lures. Flounder fishing with jigs and Berkley Gulp Alive.
Great video. I have been catching fluke off the surf with gulp on a bucktail and on a normal bucktail without gulp. Got to get out on a boat also. Thanks for making amazing videos .
I was in smithtown bay all day today. Had clams and a sinker on one rod and jigging a buck tail with gulp and a teaser on a second rod. Caught wayyyy more fish on the buck tail and teaser than the clams. 50/50 split between fluke and robins. Love the videos!!!
I wish we (aka me) could catch them like this down here in NC...i have never had a day like this. I also think it is an awesome dad move that you keep your son in the water and catching fish the whole time...that is a very cool dad.
Have you ever tried to eat a sea robin? We have found that the flesh is almost consistent with chicken. You get a huge bit a flesh off them. They aren't as flaky as fluke but they make great table fare. I would suggest that you try one the next time you pull one up. We love to bake them with lemon, tomatoes, onions, and peppers with some potatoes thrown into the bunch. They make an excellent dinner when you don't catch any fluke
Wow you guys were slaying those fluke. I go fishing out of the long island sound often and sometimes on party boats, a lot of the party boats seem to be starting to switch gears and go out for porgies and sea bass now, but the fluke are definitely still there.
Gotta get one of those rubber nets John. They work like a charm. Hooks never get tangled in them. By the way, I've been trying to "master" your method to jigging for years with little success. However, this year I've been doing phenomenal with this technique and i think I'm really starting to pick it up. So to anybody who's new to this and struggling, just be patient. Because there is a big learning curve.
Hey John. I'm wondering how you work the jig. I've been finding myself trying many different patterns from as fast as I possibly could while still hitting the bottom. I've tried sort of pumping it slower. I've tried doing little 2 pumps, waiting, then do another 2 pumps. I can't decide on what works best... How do you feel about this?
Hi john. My name is Ryan Stetser. Im a huge fan of your videos. I've become an even better flounder fisherman from watching your stuff. I live in Delaware and the fishing here is no where near as good as it is there. But I thought I could help you out a little bit. I am an employee in the fishing department at cabelas And I know a lot about fishing line. Spider wire stealth braid is the worst braid on the market. I only use power pro or suffix 832
Great Vid, but one thing though, you use your gulps with bucktails exclusively? I I just find a double drop shot is far more effective, I started useing the for frshwater app's originally myself. I found if your looking for bigger fluke use the Gulp 5" Jerk Shads or even 6" on the double drop shot with the bigger one on the bottom you will find youll catch more like that then using the bucktail/gulp combo. great vid as always just wondering why i never seen you use the double drop?
when you jig rapidly is there a point when you have slack between your rod and the bucktail? I feel sometimes it seems to fast when this happens but I would like to know what happens with you.
Hey john. I fish toward the fishers island and bluff point Groton ct side. There's a lot of shorts and it's hard to catch them. Do you know any tips I could do?
Hey john I've read your book and am making the trip up to Long Island to fish moriches inlet and then montauk point and was wondering if you have any tips for me on fishing these areas and what lures would be more proficient this time of the year
Great video Mr. Skinner! I remember watching a video with you mentioning that you're around Riverhead... is this the Long Island Sound near that area? and the water seems to be really calm!
Are you fishing in the Atlantic Ocean near the shore or are you in the river? I would like to do this same technique in Jacksonville Florida. Also is there a video or web site showing how to tie the rig your using? Thank you
Hey John, your a long island legend. On your drifts, how are you riding the ledge? Are you riding it like an edge of a cliff going across or going up and over ?
whats a good flounder/striper rod. we have cheap ones that the line always snap so i need some help with it. i already used ur tactic with gulp and we had a 25 incher at the surface. but of course our cheap line broke right as we almost had it.
hi john,,,i was curious about the tsunami teasers you are using,,they look like a jig themselves,,is the head lead? or another hard material? obviously they must weigh more than a plain gammy hook....thnku
Chris Valiaveedan Any decent baitcaster, 6-7 feet medium action that's good with 15# braid. This video shows my gear choices. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IS7wN9RqQV8.html
I live on the south shore of long island near peconic bay. I havent had much luck in the bay. Do you think I should try off in the ocean? All of your videos seem to be in relatively calm water
John Skinner Fishing I gave the ocean a try and I was finally able to catch some fluke! I purchased the kindle edition of your book, it amazing! Thanks!
Hey John, What do you do with your old Gulp juice once you are done with a pail? I was wondering what you think about purchasing a cheaper 4 or 5" swim tail grub plastic and soaking it in the Gulp juice.
Erik Branson Soft plastics won't absorb the juice like the real Gulp Baits. I seem to spill most of the juice eventually and usually don't have much to throw out.
csralumni They're nowhere near as cost-effective. I've been using them this year, but just not seeing that they're making any difference taking larger fish. I know at least one guy who swears by them. Today I was in the kayak using the 5-inch on the high hook and a 3-inch shrimp on a 3/4-ounce bucktail. The two largest fish (best was 5#) took the jig.
Brandon Cail Sorry, no. I've had issues with stuff getting lost out of the country and then having no way to track it. Fishing the Bucktail and Season on the Edge are both available as ebooks.
Hey John sea robin may not be the preferred fish to catch but trust me they sure taste better than flounder now don't call me crazy until you try one if you cook it right obviously get rid of bones and skin etc trust me they are delicious i would prefer them over flounder trust me. and also great video was wondering if you could tell me the best way to catch and find bluefish as well thank you and keep up the good work
