So, do you retrieve the chicken rig any differently than the bucktail rig? What do you put on each of the two hooks? What specific type of gulp?
@jerseyboysoutdoors
@jerseyboysoutdoors Год назад
So you would work the chicken rig the same way you work any other rig. What to put on each hook would depend on what the fluke are biting that day, I would always start with a white gulp on one hook and a pink shine gulp on the other. Then from there you can play around with the colors until you find what is working best. Thank you for watching! Best of luck on the water!

@thedukeofagita3730
@thedukeofagita3730 Год назад
I only get 10 shore days a year, and our trip is coming up. The guides on my older surf combo busted last year and I picked up a cheap rod to get through the rest of the trip. I think it’s a 10’ Star rod, not sure the weight/action but it’s much smaller and lighter than the Penn. The Battle reel (6000?) from the combo is way too big for it- major wobble when reeling, so I ordered a Pursuit 3000 reel. (Super-tight budget this year as our flights alone cost considerably more than flights+car rental in years past). I’m hoping the 3000 will be more manageable for the rod, and I can use it as a lighter, more mobile set up for fluke in the suds. I’ll still chunk bunker/clams with the big combo, but I’m kinda tired of catching mostly dogfish and skates all the time and I’m looking to switch things up this year. If it turns out that the reel won’t work, can anyone recommend a budget 7-8’ medium rod that’ll work well (for a high/low rig with say a 1oz weight) and where to get it? I’ve always bought my gear from local shops but sadly, I’ll Walmart or Craigslist it to save the money this year. Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

@@gabrielpichardo1492 I came across an 8’ med Berkeley Big Game for $23. I checked out a 7’ which was surprisingly light and sensitive, I figured the 8’ would be similar and help get out a bit further. If it’s too heavy to be mobile or too big for the reel it’ll just be a shorter and lighter bait chunker paired with my bigger reel. For $23 it’s worth a try. I can’t wait to feel the sand beneath my feet and for those first familiar “tap-taps” on the line. Been waiting for it since the day we left last summer.

Hi low rigs aren’t necessary and when u lose them they cost a lot of money, typically the fish hit the top ones and u never catch 2 at once. I recommend single jig head nothing above 1/4 ounce, 3/8 works the best especially from shore. And minimize the rig tie straight fluro to braid and light line is the best from shore. A slow twitch retrieve. This is the best shore fishing technique. Save your gear the fish don’t care.
@rexbanner7719
@rexbanner7719 Год назад
This is a video for beginners and weekenders for the most part. Tightlining is a little more advanced especially from the beach. Everything needs to be as light and sensitive as possible, especially the rod. The 1/4-3/8 is ideal in calmer water for certain sized gulp down current because of gulps high density. In a cross wind or moon tide you need a .5oz in the wash and heavier if your in an inlet, it all depends on distance and depth of the structure your swinging the bait over. You can also use more weight if you have a generously proportioned bucktail with the right head shape and line tie angle, the knot you tie helps too. While it does work consistently for better fish, it's not always the best method. After this last upwell the water got really cold and stayed dirty for a over a week. You could catch fish tightlining, but the fish were biting short or just werent committing. Teasers were outproducing everything if you could find clean water.
@UpLoadz560
@UpLoadz560 Год назад
@@rexbanner7719 I agree and disagree, if the water has a lot of current then obviously you can move up a size but generally I fish everywhere in New Jersey and I haven’t had to gone past 1/4 ounce trust me, going lighter and reducing hard wire actually increases your chances to catching short striking fish and clear water, one because it looks more natural and two the light set up causes your bait to stay longer in the strike zone with a twitch twitch pause retrieve. Hey hear me out next time you go out, ima let u in on a secret, tie straight braid to fluro, 1/4 jighead(no 10$ bucktail needed), and use the 6”gulp jerkshad. It’s a darting style soft plastic. You cast is out, then jerk up moderately 2 or 3 times and real in the slack and repeat. The bait just stays in the strike zone a lot longer and is targets bigger fish. Much love
@rustyshackleford1325
@rustyshackleford1325 Год назад
@@UpLoadz560 Lmao a secret? Your regurgitating something you saw on YT which has been around for a long time. Dead giveaway is the 6" JS. I was doing it with straight tail BAs before gulp hit the market.
@UpLoadz560
@UpLoadz560 Год назад
@@rustyshackleford1325 Ik it’s been around but I see not many people doing it, teaser rigs are more popular, obviously I got it from someone else, don’t have to be bitch about it
@rustyshackleford1325
@rustyshackleford1325 Год назад
@@UpLoadz560 Dont be afraid to try something new. Start tying your own bucktails to slow the swing and reduce sink rate. Gulp is very dense a 6" JS has alot of weight to it. As effective as it is, it does not work 100% of the time, especially from the bank. A stiff cross wind makes it very difficult to control the swing. That's why it's much more effective to fish it spot trolling in a yak or boat.
