Certainly price for value it is a really good option for a swap or upgrade install. I notice though that too many people make the mistake of installing only the bridge and leaving in the old posts\anchors.
@@primaltone9064 anybody got info on the Fernandes Head Crasher? Dumb name, but I hear it’s one of the best. I dunno. I have one and it’s fine but I did have to file the edges this year. (After about 30 years)
I have a 1000 series on my Jackson dinky pro. Every screw I could upgrade, I did with titanium parts, even the posts. I replaced the fine tuners with real German ones and it did make quite a difference with not only tuning stability but also with resonance. Thanks for your informative video 🙏🏻
be carful with titananium from what i was told it dont like brass parts kinda welds them together had friend use them on locking nut well it was bras panted black wemt to remove them no go like they were welded together.
@@Jupiter2ignite yeah its nature of tiny screws against wood. thats why some guitars like ibanez JEM and EVH has rear mounted locking nut. (got 2 holes behind the neck)
Something I think should be mentioned in all FR videos is loosen the strings before changing the height of the posts. You will destroy the knife edges if you turn those posts with the strings tight.
I've always added a little dab of lithium grease on the grooves in the posts posts and knife edges with a toothpick and never had a problem with the knife edges when adjusting the action. Even on Specials and cheaper licenced units. You shouldn't be adjusting the action very often anyhow. Once it's set where you want, it shouldn't really change.
@@sampaton5460 I can't really help you with that. You might post that in the main comments thread. I don't know how interchangable they are. Are the posts all the same distance apart? Are the cavities in the guitar body all the same? Idk.
I've used FRs since the mid 80s and thus far I've been pretty happy with my EVH 1000 series models. There is a "feel" difference between it and the OFR but haven't experienced issues "yet." It stays in tune great and always returns to pitch without issue. I ended up with that same intonation tool, it's fantastic and works on Ibanez Edge bridges as well!
Hi Marb’s Music, I agree with you that the feel is slightly different. It appears that they’re a little more robust than the specials. That Red Bishop intonation tool is top notch. That’s awesome that it works well on the Edge tremolos also. Thanks for sharing your experience and interacting with my channel. It is much appreciated!
Out of the box/factory, an Original Floyd Rose and a 1000-series one will sound 99% identical. The big difference is that the Original will still stand proud after 20 years of daily use. I've bought some second-hand beat-up, wrecked guitars just to salvage the Original Floyd Rose on it, and it was ALWAYS good to go after a bit of cleanup. Whereas I have an Edwards with a korean floyd 5000 series, started to have issues after 4-5 years (intonation, bad plastic fine tuners, no "flutter boing" anymore..) Long story short, the Floyd Rose 1000 can be a decent cheaper alternative but I'd swap it everyday for a German floyd
Also, sustain blocks are the key to tone with a FR bridge. Size also matters, the more mass the more sound and feel. That's why a BIG fat brass compared to your stock brass or nickle plated brass block makes such a noticeable difference after you've been use to playing with that small nickle plated brass block. The same will be true going from a Big fat brass to a Tungsten or Stone Tone. Dont be afraid to dremel some wood away to fit a 37mm block, ditch the rear cover. Use foam in the cavity and coated noiseless springs. The Red springs will handle 13s easily (3 springs) The Green springs are FR heaviest duty spring and can handle any set of bridge cables you put on your guitar. Hope this helps.
Hi! awesome video, I've never seen a video that shows the machined vs the bend plate, that makes total sense in the quality of the product, and also in the price tag. By the way, I have one question, I use a 7 string with Original Floyd rose, at the moment it's my favorite guitar, and play songs in standard E, Drop D (as it was a 6 string), but also I play a lot in B standard and drop A (7 string mode), my question is: do you think I can install 2 D-tuna systems on the 6th & 7th string in order to make easier to drop this 2 strings? I'm not sure if there is enough space for both of the D-tuna. Thanks in advance
Hi Roberto, That is a great question. I’ve never seen anyone use 2 D-Tunas on one guitar before. I imagine, if your trem is set to where it can’t be pulled sharp, it would be plausible. Getting to the set screw on the inner one might be challenging as it is on the side. Overall, I think spring tension might be the most important thing. If you’ve got an extra $48 hanging around, it’s definitely worth trying. If you do please let me know what your results are. Thanks for your contribution. That is a really interesting thought. Since I don’t have any 7 string guitars, I may try it for a double drop D experiment. Thanks again Roberto.
@@primaltone9064 thanks for your answer, maybe some day I’ll try it and surely let you know what hapenned. The bad News is that this device is about 80-90 usd here in México but if it’s functional I think it worth it
so curious if I have a 1000 on my Charvel ProMod Dk24 If I bought an original or a Lockmeister will they fit directly? Im also a lefty so not sure if they are made in left handed just assuming
Hi Brett, I bought the RedBishop on Amazon. www.amazon.com/RED-BISHOP-ACCU-LOCATOR-Intonation-Adjuster/dp/B07NST2LSB/ref=sr_1_3?crid=2NX7GU2O2FLPF&keywords=floyd+rose+intonation+tool&qid=1676508200&sprefix=Floyd+rose+int%2Caps%2C130&sr=8-3 I really like this one. According to their info, it should work on a multitude of different Floyd style tremolos.
Thanks! I have a ~ late 1980’s - early 1990’s Fender HM Strat with 24 frets and a FR tremolo. I’m gonna have to get it out and take a closer look at it. I installed some kind of aftermarket “kit” that makes it easier to adjust intonation. It didn’t involve any permanent changes, just some parts attached to the intonation screws to make it easier
Great video, thank you. Been using and setting up Floyds since the 90s. My friends give me theirs to work on (lucky me). Do you have much experience with Gotoh's Floyds? I believe they manufacture Ibanez's Edge bridges too. The Lockmeister and Gotoh seem to be the go-to these days.
Hi SA, I have set up a few Gotohs. It’s pretty much the same as setting up a true Floyd. The only thing I’ve run into is that the D’tuna it very difficult if even possible to set up on the Gotoh due to the pitch on The fine tuner area. My attempt was unsuccessful. Other than that, it’s the same. Thanks for watching and I’m glad you liked the video. More to come soon!
Welcome 5.0 or NO! On eBay, the stratosphere store is a place to get a new German Floyd for much less. $199. I’ve purchased 2 from there so far. Thanks for watching and subscribing!
From what I've gathered as I just purchased a guitar with the FR special. The special saddles are 20$. The 1000 saddles are 90$ so I would say the hardware starts at the 1000 and up. I'm upgrading my special to 1000 black saddles if they ever get off backorder..
The Redbishop is designed to be a generic tool for floyds so you can use it on bridges with lower profiles or angled finetuner mounts. As far as, I'm aware the Redbishop is machined in Japan if that's something anyone wants to know. I bought mine to deal with a Edge III trem on one of Ibanez guitars.
Hi Will, Thank you for sharing your experience. I really like the Redbishop too. It’s the highest quality Floyd in Tati on tool I’ve come across so far.
Thanks a lot dude that was a really helpful video for a rookie like myself ! you seem like a really nice guy dude. God bless and hope you have a great day
If anyone wants to truly evaluate the overall quality of a genuine floyd vs. any other copy (except schaller) you just have to handle both of them. What a video won't show but is obvious in person is that a genuine floyd is a finely crafted precision tool and the others are like a lower resolution copy, identical from a few feet away but up close you start seeing the pixels so to speak.
Hi Sam, I do not believe the dimensions are the same. Please keep in mind, this information is based on what I’ve read, not actual experience. I do not own any Ibanez guitars to test it out. Thanks for watching and contributing.
I built a Warmoth guitar with a Lockmeister and it's FANTASTIC. It's virtually identical to the German Floyd Rose and much cheaper to buy (In the UK at least). Plus the Lockmeister is available in multiple radiuses, so you're not limited to 10 inches unlike the Floyd Rose branded one.
Hi Jimbob, Thanks for sharing your experience. I agree. The Lockmeister is definitely an awesome alternative to the German Floyd and the parts are identical. All of the Schaller products I’ve run in to have been of superior quality. Rock on brother!
@@primaltone9064 I personally think the LM is a no brainer if you want a flatter radius on your guitar. And I'm honestly shocked that even Eddie Van Halens high end signature guitar has that EVH branded Floyd in it. At $4500, I'd want a German made one!
I exchanged emails with Floyd Rose about the difference between German made OFR and the 1000 series, here is the response.. Hello there, The 1000 is made just like the original with the same materials but made in our Korean factory. The 1000 is only sold in bulk to manufacturers to give the Floyd Rose original option and keep the price of the guitar down. Sincerely, Dave Yockey Floyd Rose Support
Hi Ryan, I can buy that they use the same materials. However, just comparing the base plates demonstrates that the manufacturing process is clearly different on at least the base plates. The bend at the fine tuners is definitely done differently on the 1000. That area was bent prior to plating as there is a displacement of material at the bend. Maybe they machine that extra material off in Germany. If that’s the case, perhaps Korea skips that operation in order to keep production costs down. I don’t think they feel a whole bunch different. Thank you for sharing your experience.
I just put a Gotoh GE1996T on my Japanese made RG470. What's crazy is the sustain block is SMALLER on the Gotoh than the LO-TRS trem it replaced, yet it has better sustain. Apparently having a high quality brass block means something. So far the Gotoh is really nice, and the whammy bar design is a million times better than my other guitar with the original Ibanez Edge (pop in style).
@primaltone9064 not exactly. In my case the original trem post was enlarged/oval on the treble side to where I could pull the bushing out by hand. So drilling out to use the larger bushings that came with the Gotoh was mandatory. I started with a 27/64 bit, and despite having a successful test fit on a basswood block, the guitar wood was far older and more brittle, so it cracked when pressing in the bushings. Pulled them back out, soaked the cracks with thin CA glue, drilled out the holes to 7/16 and pressed them back in. The Gotoh fits the term cavity, but just barely. Only a couple mm between the screws on the back and the edge of the cavity. Also, the front corner on the treble side is less than 1 mm from the corner of the cavity, so REALLY close.
Thanks Mike, that is very useful information. There are a lot of people who own RG450s and might want to upgrade theirs tremolos as well. Thank you for your comment. Awesome subject!
@@2204JCM Nor does it make sense to put a 1000 series on $4500 guitar. The high end Eddie Van Halen signature model has that EVH branded 1000 series Floyd, which I think is disgraceful. At that price I want a German Floyd.
I've had them all and I have honestly never had one that wouldn't hold tune. I don't Floyd much, occasionally I'll use it for vibrato, but not much dive bombing.
I have the TRS-101 on my vintage "jackson" guitar. I didn't initially like it but its smooth like butter now that I put some better springs in it. Its a Japanese built licensed floyd. I dig it. I've never used an OFR. I had a 1000 in an ESP number of years back and then I had a cheap licensed model in an old Ibanez RG. It wasn't an edge. It was a FR but cheap.
Yeah the TRS-101 and perhaps more so the TRS Pro are very good. Apparently they are generally used on European\Asian market guitars where North America get the Jackson branded JT580LP. My 2007 Jackson DK2M (from Japan) has the TRS Pro. As far as I can tell the TRS PRO is the same bridge as the JT-580LP.
I have never had an issue with the "specials" however I do not whammy much. I have only have one "1000" and it works fine but the tuners are the stiffest I have ever experienced. Works fine other than that.
Indestructible.... I have one and literally bounce n lift the guitar with the whammy bar and still can't throw it out of tune. There's a reason why guys like Steve Vai and Joe Satriani use the Edge bridges.
The Floyd Rose 1000 is exactly the same as your German OFR and Hardened Steel through and through, it's just made in Korea and is an OEM Tremolo. The Floyd Rose Special is also made in Korea the base plate is SPOT hardened steel ( knife edges) the saddles & sustain block are Zinc, other than that all your other parts are the same as your OFR and 1000. You can literally call FR and they will tell you. There are height differences in the nuts between OFR, 1000, Special, R3 is the most common nut used and the difference between the R3 nuts is String Spacing. I hope this helps.
No, not true at all. The 1000 is PRETTY close to OFR. But not exactly the same. And the special is 100% made in China. You can literally call FR? Are you being serious? I hope your just a joking troll.
@@9hk38f No, I'm not joking not only does their website specify the 1000 is the same as an OFR you can call them with any other questions and when a company represents a product and writes a description they are bound by law to represent it truthfully other wise its false advertising and would open them to lawsuits. So you're wrong.. my information is directly from the source, but you can even Google it 🤣
@@9hk38f The OP is correct. The 1000 is the Korean OEM trem which used to be the licensed by FL trem that was used on higher end models from guitar makers like Jackson, and Schecter. Schecter uses a 1500 now which is specifically for their guitars. The main difference that Floyd Rose states is that the 1000 series isn't as consistent because it isn't made in the german factory so you can have varying durability and smoothness with the parts even though they are the exact same material and design.
@@9hk38f awww, did the facts bust your opinion bubble 😅 you may not like it but it's TRUE! And the FRS is made in S Korea not China. My thing is, you have the most powerful tool ever, right at your fingertips, never before has information been so easy to find even from official sources, and you still choose myths, lies and legends.
Where's the Fender Floyd Rose that's on the 90's deluxe plus. Mine with the Hipshot Tremsetter has been in place since 1996 and has had not 1 problem in all these years. Cranked my bridge up a little so it's got movement up and down. Can pin it against the body and let go and keep playing in tune. Best I've ever used.
Hi Themismusicanmore, Unfortunately, I’m not aware of a Floyd Rose SE series or model. Please share any information you may have on it. Thank you for watching and contributing. If not already, please subscribe.
Once you set up even the cheap ones they work just as well. I have an original on an old jackson and a cheap one on a ltd. Feel and play the same both smooth and both hold tune perfect. You can however get better looks in the real Floyd's but as far as playing...nothing different in them that matters. Just drop a very tiny bit of oil in fine tune threads and good to go.
@@TheAgentAssassin well my ltd with the cheap one on it is over 20yrs old and still holds tune and plays perefctly. If you are wearing it out enough to notice i don't think its the bridges problem but the player's. The only upgrade i would do to it would be to put a heavier brass block on it. And that is just for the mass. But saddles and all that see no point in the price gap. And i own a shecter with a fr1000 and a 1980s charvel with a real floyd. As long as you set them up right they all play and feel the same. I play more thrash and have never had any part of the 3 break. Just a drop of gun oil on the fine tuners every year or so and good to go. But if people want to spend 5 times as much for no tonal or play differences go for it. Its thier money to waste.
I pretty much agree, I have a bunch of Floyd Rose equipped guitars, Jackson and Charvel, the only one I have not tried I think is the special. I have one that has original german floyd and the giant block and all kinds of FU tone and FR upgrades including springs and claw and my old Jackson licensed ones seem just as good with the exception of the big ass block might make a slight tonal difference, seriously doubt it though, also the 1500 pro I believe in my Charvel seems to have the smoothest fine tuners for some reason, they might be aftermarket, I bought it used.
maybe its not 1500 pro, its surface mount whatever came on 2010 Charvel So Cal made in Japan. Perfect guitar except for someone replaced the bridge dimarzio pick up with the worse pick up ever, EVH Frankenstein bridge pup...its horrible
I've had 2 FR 1000 series that are just garbage. They held tune ok, not great but ok. My main issue, is the saddles are not steel. They are aluminum / aluminium. By the time I had the screws tight enough to hold the strings properly, they were already starting to strip the thread out. Replaced with a Schaller.... OMG what a difference. Wayyyy better tuning stability, and zero issues with anything at all. Well worth the money. Any FR equipped guitar I buy from now on, will get the Schaller, unless it already comes with a German made FR.
There was an OEM Kahler licensed floyd rose bridge made in the mid 90s for ESP exclusively. Not the steeler or spider. Had the hardened post inserts. Best floyd ever.

I think the "S" on the Special stands for: 💩, which would explain a lot. I have a Fender Players Stratocaster with a Floyd Rose Special. These are made in Mexico and retail for $929.99!! They were going for $979.99. Thar is ridiculous pricing to have this horrible piece of hardware on it. The most annoying aspect of it is that the knurled lock nut for the arm tension doesn't hold whatsoever. It's completely useless. I'm hoping the Made In Germany models don't have this problem. I'm assuming they don't?
My apologies SVT, After doing some research, it turns out that the USA Wolfgang’s also use the 1000 series Floyd. From Floyd Rose official site: The 1000 Series Original is the Korean-made version of the Original Tremolo, made to the same specifications and materials, but is available only to guitar manufacturers and can not be purchased aftermarket except for the Burnt Chrome finish.
@@primaltone9064 That's what I was referring to, the USA made Wolfgangs. So, the Korean made Floyds are to the same specs as the German made Floyds. Thanks
I have had Floyd Rose 1000s that were better than the brand new Original Floyd Rose I bought. Mine had an issue with loose fine tuners and comes loose with any use at all whereas my multiple 1000s that came on my Korean Schecter and my Edwards worked perfectly fine aside from the gray finish that was fading (and sometimes oxidizes). They stayed in tune for hours of playing without touching it. I think we can all agree that the Floyd Rose Special sucks compared to both with its grade 5 steel as opposed to the proper grade 8 saddles, however
Hi Brandon, When I pointed out the grade 5 and grade 8, I was referring to the screws. As far as the saddles go, I think you’re absolutely right. The metals on the specials are definitely of lower quality. I’ve got an actual 1984 Floyd Rose. By 1986, it was completely oxidized. At the time, I was playing out a lot and exposed my equipment to extreme climate variations. A way to help control the oxidation is to wipe down your guitar/s after each time you play. Wiping on a super lite coat of CRC 3-36 on the ares in question can help. Thank you for contributing to the channel. Your thoughts and experiences are always welcome and appreciated.
Interesting comparison. I have with a Dean with licensed Floyd Rose on it, and it is a bit different than any of the real ones. As with all of them, having the part that doesn't come with any of them is the most important, the FRTES....
Thank you David, In a future video, I’ll have to try out the Floyd Rose Trem-Endus Tremolo Stabilizer. I have no experiences with that device but it does look pretty interesting. Thanks for contributing.
