Here is just a final rundown of my fluval edge. its a great tank and super quiet i highly recommend. if you have comments questions or concerns let me know!
I had the same thought regarding the betta breathing but I did find a video where someone shows that it wasn't an issue as the betta poked his head up to the corner of the opening. I definitley will slow the water flow more than the settings on the filter actually allow one way or another and will post an update when it's all said and done. Thanks for responding so quickly.
Thx for the vid. We just got one, Petco had it in the store. Arrived home and a good spider crack was found next to the top/ "chimney" part. So, heading back to exchange it. Can't wait to set it up, yours is really done well.
I haven't bought the tank yet but I've been looking for an aquascape I like and he collection of fish I prefer. I will probably goth some neons, shrimp (for cleanup) a snail and maybe a little pelco (also for algae cleanup). What sort of substrate is that? It's such a good colour. Not blinding white, but still contrasts well. It was a few years ago now, so u still have the tank?
Paul Kennedy some snails shit a lot. Look into ones that are good. I recommend snails over a pleco or something. A ok eco needs a big tank and can grow to over a foot long. Think of the end size of the fish not what it looks like at the pet store. One thing I really took into consideration was the interaction of the fish. The fish I had were very friendly and nibbled my hand, came up to the tank when I walked by and were playful with each other. You can't put much in a tank like this. It had neons before but they kinda just schooled and freaked out everytime I walked by. This is just regular white substrate from petco. The tank was taken apart unfortunately when I went to university. I just graduated so maybe I'll have the time to throw it back together as a saltwater tank haha
absolutely love your tank it is so clean and sparkling and the way you said it up this phenomenal I have the same one what kinds of Pet Supermarket on sale for 49 bucks the manager didn't even know it was that cheap he wanted to buy it it was the last one I don't want to get some shrimp neon tetras and some fancy guppies
I totally agree but for a betta and a few shrimp I dont think the dimensions would pose any real threat. Water changes is what I hoped would be easier so I appreciate your feedback.
Thats a toughie! I would try to reduce the flow from the filter. Since bettas breathe at the surface, the filter might flow them away. I would keep an eye on your betta or maybe even keep the filter off when you first put in the betta. Then he will get used to where the hole is for him to breathe. Then Id run the filter on low and see if he can still reach the surface. If he can, you're solid! If not, I would suggest keeping the filter out or again reduced somehow to a very light flow. Might help with bubbles under the glass as well. If the filter is turned up, the water evaporates out eventually and moved bubbles under the top of the glass. That was always a queue for water top off/change.
the shrimp are just ghost shrimp. i wanted RC but i couldnt get a hold of any at the moment. as for the person asking about the loaches, its ok to keep these in this tank. they have alof of play room and these loaches dont grow big. the two are very sociable and happy as well.
+Daniel Seryani the brown and gold striped one is a type of koolie loach the other grey one is a type of weather loach, and from the ones I've had in my tanks actually make knocking sounds when the pressure gets lower. I think the koolie loaches can do the same thing. listen for it before a rain storm or cold weather front comes through.
Thanks! Lol well for now it has 3 cobra endlers 3 fancy guppies (they all stay super small) and two kuhli loaches (one black, one looks like a giraffe), and shrimp! They clean my tank from excess food to prevent ammonia spikes, and an ivory snail (beautiful white snail that helps with the algae in hard to reach areas of the tank
sorry im late i didnt notice people replied. yes the siphon is hard but i have a pump that siphons filters then returns the water. it helped alot because the water changes happen quick. then after im done with that i go ahead with a water change.
Very nice looking - I am hoping to get the other Fluval Spec 5 - but would like this one instead. Only thing that worries me is the amount of water surface. I have heard some types of fish can get disoriented if they hit the top and its a top or wall and go another direction while going for air. Only reason I did not get it.
+Scott Veirs Gouramis and Corydorus catfish tend to be partial air breathers. They do this even if the O2 levels are fine in your tank waters. the armored catfish tend to dart up to the surface rapidly and can bang themselves on a sealed tank like this. you can level an inch or two clearance from the top and the water's surface to give them the air they need.
oh you know that tiny friggin hole on the top. it was a pita but i worked it in there. that little piece holding the right side up actually came off te end. it was too long so i sawed it off and ran wooden dowels through it to hold it up in a different manner instead of laying flat (wasnt as eye popping as this)
If u plan on putting 3 or 4 fish in there how often would you need to change the water and clean the tank with your setup? Looks amazingly clean and has given me inspiration! Thanks
I found the snails tend to lay to mamy eggs.. They don't hatch but do become unslighly and impossible to remove once attach to the bog-wood rocks etc..
I know this is old but maybe you’ll see it. I love the fish selection in this tank but everywhere says those species don’t go well together, and the eloch are in a tank too small, would you agree? Not it was fine?
Hey, I saw it! The tank is no longer up. However, if I was to do it again I wouldn't put the loaches in the aquarium. They did well still as I kept it clean very regularly. However, it would have done much better with just the other fish and some cleaner crew.

Awesome Tank! How does your tank do with oxygen and c02? Does that amount of plants provide enough oxygen for the fish and vise-versa? Also can you share all the different plants you have in there? Thanks!
Its just like a sandy substrate if that's what you wanna call it lol its not quite sand but not too big...more like fine pebbles lol but I haven't had to fertilize so far because

Brandon Joseph Thanks! I used the fluval edge scrubber because this tank has corners that a normal scrubber cant reach. I just leave it in there and scrub it regularly lol
Ali Don The stone looks like basalt which is common in parts of the U.S. Pacific NW. It's a black dense mafic stone that fractures at angles and holds up to erosion.
HAAhaha good question....well it was longer actually. The little piece holding it up on the right side was a piece I chopped off trying to fit it. While it was empty you could contort everything somehow to get it in lol
how are you keeping these live plants alive with just being in plain sand? Are you using "Root Tabs" for fertilizer? Are you using Liquid weekly dosing? Tank looking great, keep up the great work
Michael Piccirillo they are low light low maintenance plants! For instance the Java fern can actually be tied to the wood itself and it would grow into it. One thing you could do too is get moss and tie it to the piece of wood and that's an amazing effect once it grows in.
Ive got the same tank. Ive had it about a year and has continuously had bad algae problems and im thinking of investing in a uv hob filter. Any tips on how to keep algae away please? I've literally tried everything. Thanks.... And its a gorgeous tank youve got there btw.
That's definitely a drawback but it really does look good. Based off your experiences with this tank, would you imagine the 12 gallon version might be a little easier to access? I believe it's the same footprint as this one but twice as tall. Obviously one would have to reach in further but the leverage may be better.
Anthony Rodriguez I did not find any value of a taller tank besides the fact that it has double the volume. That might help with water changes but as far as the fish and stuff go, I think it's harder to utilize a taller tank rather than a wider one.
Jackson Wuepper I clean it with a water recycler thing with a sand siphon at the end. Nothing special. Most of the time I clean it while its as is but if I am deep cleaning, I'll move everything around or take stuff out.
