This is my first aquarium and I haven't ever changed the water in a tank. Getting the basics on my tank was exactly what I needed. Thank you for the hand holding!
Thank you so much!! my daughter got the 6g version of this from Santa and this is very informative. Next time you have to trim you should send some my way too :)
i just found your channel because i bought the same aquarium and wanted to do everything right with it! Thanks a lot for giving those nice tips you are awesome!!!
This video was super helpful for a beginner aquarium enthusiast like myself interested in purchasing this tank. Thanks for posting! Maintenance doesnt seem as bad as I thought on this tank.
Great vids. I had some experience with trying to keep Bettas years ago. It was well before RU-vid was what it is now and it was difficult to get reliable advice. I usually ended up losing them due to not knowing what I was doing. Videos like this are very helpful and entertaining for people who are interested.
Totally helped me as I'm picking up my Fluval Edge today and was looking for a video on how to do this. Thanks so much - so glad to have discovered your channel. I've now subscribed!
Thanks Pecktec. I've enjoyed watching your videos on the Fuvel Edge. I have an old Aqua One 165 litre (43 gallon) aquarium which is too large for me to maintain now. I have one goldfish which is 12cm long (5 inches) and I've had him/her for about 6 years. I'm looking at the Fugal Edge 23 litre (6 gallon) aquarium for him - hope it's big enough - and maintenance has GOT to be easier as it takes me around 2-3 hours to clean the Aqua One due to algae etc ! Anyway, I found your videos really helpful :)
Very informative, thank you! I have a Fluvial Edge 6 gallon tank, and everything you talked about it relevant for my tank as well! I wish you were in NYC to swing by and give me some pointers on my tank! Keep making vids for us!
Thank you for the instructional video, I am quite the beginner and have tried dabbling with an aquarium before with no luck (and lack of knowledge). This Fuval Edge looks stylish and relatively easy to take care of so I might try again !
thank you! this video was super helpful. I derped and tried to remove the filter of my fluval edge 12g before I unplugged the power of the tank..a lot of the sludge from the filter came through the waterfall into the main tank and I freaked a little, hence being the reason why I found your video on fluval edge maintenance..I'm not worried too much since my tank is fairly new, but I will definitely never make that mistake again.
I'm new to aquarium fish. i bought a fluval edge because it looked really nice in the living room. I'm gonna replace the water and sponge, biomax etc tomorrow. Your video will help me a big time as well. Will see how it goes. First time replacing water too lol.
I have the same aquarium and got some lessons from you today. Going ahead I will stop to over clean the media filter on tap water and hope to get a healthier thank. I have been facing a lot of algies on my plants and so far I have not been successful to get rid of the problem, I end up with less plant but that has build up the NO3 levels. My aquarium takes a lot of light from the windows and probably I will find a better spot to avoid the excess of algies on the glass and over the plants. I like your cool approach dealing with aquariums, keep the good work. Excellent video. Thanks.
It was very interresting and very good to know! I'm looking for this kind of aquarium and I must know how about to do the maintenance. Thank's a lot you were professional. Sorry for my poor english,I'm French Canadian.
Although this is by no means difficult and the instructions tell you what to do(it's pretty much the same as putting in the media the first time, except this time you do them one-by-one so not to mess up the biology), it is a very good video and for those of us starting out it helps a lot to see it done, visually. I have not kept fish for some time, but I did used to breed them and filters have moved on, so watching a quick demo has been very handy - I would like to get back in to tropical fish and have picked up some good tips through online videos. Especially the one about cleaning the media, instead of replacing it - unless of course there is a valid need to replace it. Thank you
I've been scared of live plants for a long time because of things I read or heard about algae issues having to use co2 and plants having parasites. I think the co2 mostly scared me away and made me think it would be too complicated to keep plants and that I would fail at keeping them alive. I always kind of wanted plants because they look nicer to me and help with nitrates. You really inspired me in this video to not be scared of plants. since seeing this I went out and bought some Argentine swords, Amazon swords and Anubis and put them in my two tanks, they have been in there for about a month now and are doing great. the Amazon's are growing like crazy! not so much with the other two but still doing well. so thank you so much. it's made a new phase in my fish hobby that makes me excited to see my plants grow and my tank look more natural and have a healthier environment.
Subscribed...and thanks for the vid, It was very helpful! I'm thinking about starting up again with aquariums and fish (and maybe plants, which I've never tried) and came across Fluval Edge aquariums. I had to google them cos I had no idea what they were. Anyhow, after watching this vid, I now know what they are and how to do maintenance on them! Sweet, thanks! :-) It's been probably 20+ years since I've kept fish. So much has changed it seems, so will need to catch up a lot before I dive (hehehe) into an aquarium again. ;-)
Love your vids! These tanks are sold here in Japan under the Japanese aquarium company GEX in there high end band name called "Glassterior Edge". I want one hehe
Hi! Good video. I am looking into one of these as a new addition. I like it! I don't know if you ever touched that subject: Best placement for tech vs water flow in a tank. (heater, CO2, Shihiro Doctor, air stone etc...). I keep thinking there must be somekind of dynamic but other that figuring to place my heater near the output of my filter...the rest remains a bit of a mystery. I am quite new to keeping a planted waterworld. :-)
Thanks to you I learned that I've been using the siphon incorrectly! Turns out that I just need to shake it to get the water going instead of dunking the whole thing in.
Can you please list or make a video about all the fish that you think are best for smaller tanks such as 20 gallons or smaller thank you and I love your floval vids thx
Thank you for this very instructive video! I bought my son one of these (second hand), and your video helped me a lot in setting it up. Now looking into the next challenge: feeding in this tank. We have 8 black neon tetras and two Corydoras Paleatus (I do not know the English name). When I feed (flakes) to the tetras, they go down to the bottom really fast due to the current. And then the Corydoras eat them all. It seems to me that the tetras are rather hungry all the time. Any tips from your end on this? Thanks in advance!
Hey man, great vid, I realize this video is almost 4 years old, I learned recently that adding ferts at the same time as your dechlorinator can be counter productive as the dechlor breaks down heavy metals present in water (and some present in flourish). Not trying to boss you around, just thought i'd let you know because flourish is expensive, so I wait a day after a water change before adding ferts so the dechlor "is used up" and doesn't break down the heavy metals needed by the plants present in the ferts, I have heard this gives your plants better growth. Have a good day :)
Love your channel. I have a fluval edge and plan on doing live plants. Ive always been told that live plants are a hassle and lead to more maintenance but you've proven quite the opposite. I hate vacuuming the gravel in this tank so having plants will fix that. My question: How often (if ever) do you need to change that substrate that you put in your fluval edge? I'd like something that will last virtually forever.
Great Vid! But I've kept bettas in my 6 gallon with no trouble at all, they sort of catch on that there is only one gap for air. Current stocking in my 6 gal are 3 female bettas and 2 ottos. Looking to stock some cherry shrimp for a bit of extra cleaning!
Very useful video. Been thinking of getting back into aquariums after a few years away. A planted tank would be great. Unfortunately I also have my eye on keeping goldfish. So I'm guessing plants are right out.
Phil Bolton Not necessarily you can keep some of them with plants. Go over to a channel called Solid Gold. There is a cutie with black and white hair that is a gold fish pro. She just started using plants in her tanks.
Thank you for these awesome videos .Any suggestions about what to do about the food for the fish and maintanence if we go away on a vacation ?... thanks again !
Food for fish is much like food for other pets. Read the ingredients! If it seems like mostly filler is probably not ideal. I have been using omega one in addition to frozen live foods like blood worms. If you feed them well normally you can go out of town for up to around two weeks without major problems. Although that is a long time not eating if you have planted tanks there are things growing in there they can snack on. Ultimately its a better idea than having a friend feed them as that could lead to disaster.
Tank looks BEAUTIFUL, I have a question, do you put an air stone in any of your Edge tanks? Was wondering about this, I set up an edge 6 gallon and will just keep 5 neon tetras with some plants and was wondering if I will be ok WITHOUT an air pump/stone. Thanks. Love your channel!
had our Fluval edge 6G tank over a month now, just havent had time to go buy the fish yet!!!, noticed that we have quite a build up of algae even though we have an algae clear sponge. Also I have just done a water change etc and washed the biomax etc under the tap, whoops!! will it be ok as we havent got fish in yet??. love your videos please make more
Very helpful. Thanks for sharing. What is your take on aerating. I have one in my planted new setup. Of course there are constant bubbles on top? Not a problem? Appreciate the feedback.
Thanks Pectec for an informative video like always, and yes I am a he...I think a second part of my nick kinda gives it away. Do you clean a canister bottom too once you remove all the filter media? I find there the most troublesome junk.
Not often but you can clean it by poring some of the water you removed in there and catching it as it comes out in a container before it goes back into the water. Then wipe it down with a paper towel and do it again.
Hey pecktec. Thank you so much for this video, Ive seen so many people online talk this tank down to the point I was considering another tank, I watched this and realised its actually not that bad. Ive got mine now, new to the whole thing of keeping fish/tanks so your videos really have helped me a lot. I followed your videos to get it all up infact as the instructions for the tank here in the UK are multi language and rather difficult to follow. For the water pump do you use all 3 of the pump pipes so it takes water from all the way down the bottom of the tank? I got one of the water pump things you use to remove the water, it is actually a gravel cleaner. With the tank being as tall as it is would it be ok to stick a plastic stick to the end of it to direct it when I have to clean the substrate? (I dont like to many plants)
Hi Pecktec, Enjoy your videos. I have the Fluval edge 6 gallon and set up the tank just yesterday. I noticed that the filter makes a lot of noise for being brand new . I tried filling the water to the top like your vid, which helped but still makes a small gurgling sound. Do you have any suggestions or is this normal for a new filter?
Nice video, and nice channel you've got :-) a lot of helpful tips. I've been cleaning my beginner's 54 litre aquarium wrong this whole time, hehe. I got a question though. What do you think of the BiOrb Flow 30 litre aquarium? And you were saying a bit about it, but how would you start a brand new aquarium with plants? Is the "fertilizer" in the bottom needed, and how long should a new tank (with entirely fresh water) go, before adding plants and later on fish? thanks in advance, Best regards from Denmark
Hi there! Thanks for the tutorial, it made the maintenance look very doable. I am looking for an aquarium for my goldfish and read in many places that the bigger the water surface exposed to air, the better for the fish. This aquarium is beautiful and very cleverly designed, but the actual surface is minimal, is this ok? Or maybe using lots of plants help to oxygenate the water too?
+l pyn some fish seem to do better than others. I don't keep gold fish but I would thing they would need more room. Fluval is making a 20 something gallon version of this one. You may want to hold out for that.
Hello, I was wondering if you could do an unboxing and setup of the fluval chi. I've looked everywhere and I can't find a decent video anywhere, and I know you make perfectly described videos. Thanks Mr.P For the reviews and whatnot keep it up
hi pecktec i just bought a fluval 12 gallon edge. i will be growing plants and adding some fish. is the fluvial e50 heater enough or should i go with the 100. thanks we love your videos
pecktec thank you very much for the advice I am new to this and I need to know what plant I can add to my community aquarium. My record is normal. Can I grow plants with conventional gabras? Damian from Argentina
Thank you for your reply the plastic stick that regulates the water is over the plastic tube can I take this off without damaging it. I didn't put the filter together when I bought it my son-in-law did
Maureen Chapman Yep it comes all the way apart. Its an Aquaclear filter so if you search google images for that you can see it disassembled. Fluval may have instructions online also. I think its an Aquaclear 20.
Great video! Carbon media will strip the water of several necessary plant nutrients. When it gets to a certain age the carbon becomes a good biological filter so I' just leave mine in and never touch it, other than rinsing.
First of all thanks for your all review videos. I want to learn your opinion(expert view) about lightning capacity of fluval edge series. Does any lightning upgrade necessary for optimal plant growth(for 6 or 12 gal)??
Thank you...I am a true beginner and found your info very valuable...I would like to keep a male better in the 6 gal Edge but he will need to gulp air from the surface. The question is can I keep the Edge water level down sy 1/2 inch or 1 inch from the top and still have normal filter function on the Edge aquarium ? Thanks, Bob
Bob Slifka as long as the water level doesn't drop below the intake you'll be fine, although even if you fill the tank the fish should still be able to access the opening for air at the top.
Hey! Thankyou for this video it’s a big help! I’m looking at buying this tank and getting fish for the first time ☺️ I was wanting to get a beta, do you think he could do okay in this tank?
I'm waiting for this tank to arrive! When Amazon switched to using USPS I almost quit my Prime membership...ugh...anyway, can you put that heater inside the column? I got a super small 50W thinking I could do that. Am I wrong?
I have a 6 gallon fluval (12 gallon discontinued) planning on weekly change taking out 1 gallon. How much flourish excel do i add. I have 6 small plants. Thanks!
I'm struggling to choose between the Edge (12g) or the Flex (15g) - what would you recommend? The Edge has the "edge" over the Flex in looks in my opinion but I think for ease, the Flex would be the better option. I like the idea of having a filter I could add more media etc to with the Flex but can't stop looking at the Edge just for how good it looks. It would be great if you could do a video comparing the two models.
Two inquiries, thus far... Do have an opinion or any knowledge on the use/discouraged use, of perfumed candles or wax melt burners, in the same room as aquariums? Also, is it okay to place an aquarium near a well sealed window, that only receives three to four hours, of late afternoon, (filtered, not direct), sunlight?
