I am such a fan of the stratum + flourite mix. Its what I currently have setup in my 75 gallon. Also I recommend mixing in eco complete as a "filler" substrate if you want to cut the overall price down for larger tanks since it also absorbs liquid ferts and makes them root available.
My betta jumped out the tank while I was at work…. 😢 that’s really a thing. My poor little buddy. He was a beautiful half moon blue. I forgot to put my lid back on after feeding my Otto’s this morning.

I ran it for a few years. There's not a lot of black substrate options and BDBS nearly killed all the fish in my tank in a few hours. Caribsea and UNS have some newer options made out of small black stones. I ended up removing mine and being frustrated with it because it kept growing BBA on the substrate itself.
too bad on the AF/UGF. You could use Bio Balls and craft mesh which could easily be shaped around the pipework. I recently redid a 5 year old tank of Stratum. The soil still has its shape and after a brief rinse looked brand new in the tank after adding my own plenum.
