Fly Fishing for Atlantic Salmon in Connecticut

As autumn takes hold of the New England landscape, I grab my fly rod and hit the Naugatuck River in Connecticut to seek out the illustrious Atlantic salmon. Will I be able to land one of these celebrated salmonids? Only one way to find out...
Although the historical strain of Atlantic salmon was driven to extinction in Connecticut long ago, the state maintains an exciting stocking program in which hatchery-raised, adult salmon are released into two rivers each year in order to give anglers a crack at this otherwise long-lost species. And what a fascinating and exhilarating opportunity it is!
If you never saw my original Atlantic salmon video produced in Autumn of 2019, be sure to check that out using the link below: • Atlantic Salmon Fishin...
Oh, a couple quick notes, by the way: I repeatedly state in this video that this is my first go at catching these salmon "on the fly". By that, I intend to mean "on the fly ROD". I wanted to clarify that because I caught a broodstock salmon on a streamer fly in my 2019 video, but I worked it with spinning gear. Also, I mentioned that this would be my "first Atlantic salmon on the fly in Connecticut", but in retrospect, that's actually not true. I have caught plenty of little, juvenile salmon in Connecticut on the fly rod before (you've even seen me do so in an episode on a small stream in 2019), but none of the broodstock adults that we're targeting in this episode.

Atlantic fishing on the fly was a blast, folks, even if it was a bit of a grind! What's your favorite fly for targeting these exciting gamefish?

I remember my first salmon, caught up in Canada. My aunt cooked it up for me, it was awesome. Another spectacular video.

Congratulations! Very nice salmon - as any Atlantic is a sight to behold. I think we, as Americans, don't often know how luck we are to not only have such great fisheries in this country, but for the opportinity as "regular" people to go out and fsh for such magnificent species. I have the book, "Fishing Atlantic Salmon" "The Fles and Patterns" by Joseph Bates - a classic treatise of sorts on the fish. And in it, it's clear after a lifetime of fishing some of the worlds best salmon rivers, that anglers can fish over a school of salmon and never even have one breath on their fly, much less have a take from it. . .sometimes even, a "follow" is a success, lol. Personally, I live in NY, about 10 minutes from the Kinderhook Creek and a little over an hour south of the Battenkill. This year, however, I will be making a few trips to the Bouquet, up north by Plattsburgh to pursue (landlocked) Atlantics. Further south of there, in between my home and Plattsburgh, there's also a run of landlocked coming out of Lake Champlain in the spring and fall that run up the Schroon River - though my understanding is because of ease of accessibility to I87, it's a very popular place and similar to Pulaski, creates an envirinment not unlike the infamous "combat fishing." I wish you well and keep up the good work.

I was looking forward to this video for a while now. The Housatonic river system is really amazing and carries probably every fish in the state. Great video, maybe go after them again this winter? I hear they get more active during winter.

I’ve actually been out targeting salmon for probably 4 full days since filming this episode... totally skunked. I actually had to consciously decide not to fritter away too many outings chasing them and focus on some fun autumn trout opportunities instead. But I’m sure i’ll get drawn back into the salmon game again a time or two this year haha!

I keep two reels in my backpack when fly fishing. One with a floating line, the other with a sinking line. If I need I can swap out. Though this can be a pain to break down your nymph rig and swap to the streamer set up it usually takes much less time than walking back to the truck and getting another rod set up, especially if I'm way away from the truck. Also easier than trying to keep up with two rods while moving around the water and hiking up and down the river.

That's definitely a practical strategy and one I will probably use if I head out for salmon again this year. I'm typically content to use floating line for the most part and just add weight as necessary to get streamers down deeper, so I'm not accustomed to having a burning need for both floating and sinking line on the same stretch of river at the same time. These salmon management areas are just unique in their "no extra weight on the line" regulation, which forces me to use sink-tip line to get lighter streamers down. It's such a rare circumstance though that I never got around to considering the most practical way to implement two line types. I know there are reels for which you can buy extra spools, though I happen not to own any. But you're idea of just bringing along an extra reel is a pretty good solution. Thanks for commenting!

Great vid i miss the naugy. . Fish the more north sections and you may find some sweet holdover browns.

I was out targeting salmon on the same general stretch of the river in 2018 in December. Twice I thought I’d finally hooked one, only to discover that I’d instead managed to hook snakey, 20” browns. A rather pleasant surprise in each case, actually!

I'm your number one fan lol I live in RI and fish in Connecticut. I just started fishing Connecticut so i mostly fish the Shetucket and Salmon rivers in Occum and Colchester i need to start fishing more areas that's why i watch your videos I'm a fly fisher and don't really know to many places in Connecticut to fly fish. I'm going to start going further into the state to find more places to fish. Do you have any suggestions? Thanks

So now that CT isnt stocking these salmon for restoration of the relic population. They're just dumping them into reaches of the shetucket and naugatuck that historically once held actual sea run fish? Sounds cool, but makes me sad that the rivers can no longer sustain a large population. Makes me glad I lived in maine these past couple of years, where I could atleast see and know the populations are returning and growing.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 3 года назад
I think Maine's restorations probably fared better for two reasons. For one thing, Maine is just better-suited to the species. Connecticut was always at the far edge of the Atlantic salmon's southern range limit, so even when our rivers were pristine centuries ago, they were just barely within the suitable parameters to sustain the species. The second reason ties into the first: namely that the historical Connecticut River strain of Atlantic salmon was probably uniquely adapted to the rigors of living on the edge of the species range. The stock we borrowed from Maine in an effort to restore the species evolved in much different conditions and probably lacked some of the region-specific genetic fine-tuning that their long-lost Connecticut kin possessed.

I live in CT and am going to take my dad Atlantic salmon fishing early next year. Any advice for some first timers?
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 3 года назад
I think the best advice is simply that perseverance is key with these fish. They may come easy sometimes; it’ll be a true grind in other instances. Best of luck out there!

What's your take this year? How's the Atlantic fishing?
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 7 месяцев назад
I didn’t target Atlantics this year. For me, the Atlantics tend to consume a lot of time. Sometimes you get em quickly and easily (especially if you’re out there right after the stocking), but otherwise it can be a game of investing several days on the water grinding for them. This year, I just wanted to continue focusing on blue lines. However, now that the big ones are out there, I may give it a go or two later this month.
@ConnecticutAngler
@ConnecticutAngler 7 месяцев назад
Actually, I should clarify that I actually DID target Atlantics this year, but only in the Connecticut River up at the tip-top of New Hampshire. Hell of a good time.
