It's been almost 5 years since we filmed taking 12 year-old Nolan on a surprise fishing trip. He is back on Uncut Angling doing the teaching now. The Red River is one of the most prolific multi-species fisheries in the world. The Channel Catfish opportunities here are widely known, and remarkably they can realistically be caught on the fly!

This is awesome! I fish the Red with my kayak in Fargo all the time. It puts you in tune with the fish as it tries pull you out of the kayak, fly fishing would be even better.

I went in over my waders once in the early spring and the water was so cold. I ran back to the truck, stripped down and sat there with the heat blasting for a half hour. I was almost hypothermic. Kind of scary too when your in the river with waders full of water. Good vid. Thumbs up.

I use to fish the Red River at Lockport a lot in the late 80's and early 90's, and there was almost always a guy down there fly fishing and catching a mixed bag of fish including some monster channels. It's an amazing fishery.

Aaron you inspired me to tie my very first fly, I even went and got a haircut so I could use my own dirty blonde, tied a simple egg sucking leech and hooked up with 4 king salmon on my first outing, landed only one at 33" 15 lbs. Keep being you and being a fountain of creativity for us watching at home, I would've never tried if it weren't for you

Only experience I’ve had with Manitoba fishing was back in 2016, mid January for a week around flon flon, only caught a single burbot it was -20° and colder every single day. @2:11, is that the correct sharpening direction (towards the point)? Sharpening towards the point will create a burr that will easily bend over and create a dull point. Sharpen away from the point (or edge, for you knife sharpeners) so the excess ribbon of metal doesn't dull your "serious" edge.

I'm amazed at the size this warm-water species achieves this far north, where the growing season is so much shorter than in the central to southern U.S. I wonder how long it takes them to reach that size? As to the "fatness" of these fish, I guess that's relative. These fast-water fish would be considered pretty skinny most places at that length. They remind me of the channel cats I used to catch below the Norden Falls on the Niobrara River in north central Nebraska. Those fish were built like pike.
