Join me in my first trip ever to Westport Washington with the fly rod!
#flyfishing #flyfishdan #troutfishing
Fly fishing for trout, fly fishing for Cutthroat in the Pacific Northwest has been a passion of mine for the last 40 years. I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. I generally will fly fish and practice catch and release when fly fishing for trout, but I have been known to catch and cook during camping trips to many of my favorite fishing spots. I love to fly fish lakes in the higher elevation, though I have a few lowland lakes that are fly fishing only that are also on my most favorite list. I have a ton experience fly fishing rivers for trout and always enjoy discovering new rivers to fly fishing in and around the greater Pacific Northwest. I am also an accomplished at casting a fly rod - whether it is fly fishing casting for distance, fly fishing casting for accuracy, the double haul, roll cast, tower cast and many more fly fishing casting techniques - I can show you the basics when it comes to casting a fly rod. I also will cover many topics that relate to getting started with fly fishing. From your basic fly fishing setups, flies and fly boxes - we cover all the fly fishing needs for beginners. Thanks for taking the time to tune into FlyFishDan and I hope you consider subscribing to my fly fishing channel. Cheers and FISH-ON!!!

I’ve had best luck for surf perch in the SURF. I think you’re definitely better off on the unprotected side of the jetty. Lots of good videos out there on reading beaches. Look for a trough close to shore and fish parallel to it, runout areas where water from breaking waves returns, etc.

Thanks for the advise - I’ll look for those next time - hopefully with fewer surfers in the water next time to boot. Cheers!

Starfish On?!?! Amazing!😃 Beautiful video as always. I’ve fished saltwater for over 40 years but never cast a fly in it...going for a week in July so that’s gonna happen! Starting with Clouser minnows and some shrimp imitations I’ve tied up. Hoping for a Fish On! 👍🎣🙂 I had to edit and say as soon as you opened your fly box I chose the orange one..and you grabbed it! 👍👌

Starfish on indeed! LOL didn’t think I’d ever say that. Yep, the orange fly certainly spoke to me…now I just need to find a saltwater fish that’ll eat it! Best of luck to you on your saltwater endeavor! Cheers!

Can't wait to see the next installment!! At least you didn't blank. I've dabbled myself in UK saltwater, with very limited success. I've had a few European bass, a species very similar to the US east coast striped bass. But the distribution isn't uniform. Up to Scotland in a few weeks, hoping to get my first pollack on fly, a fish similar to cod but very hard fighting. There's something daunting, as you say about standing in front of the ocean, but something like 95% of the fish are within half a mile of the shore, so that's encouraging. I love the feeling of setting rods up by the sea at dawn! 😊

I’ve never tried this on a fly pole, my son and I just bought a couple poles and will be getting in to fly fishing. I would try making a fly that resembles a Gulp Sand Worm. I know on my regular pole they smash those.! Just found your channel and really enjoy it, I’m here in Washington to and will be shooting a bunch of fishing videos for my channel soon. I’m in the Olympia area, not sure where you guys are located

I live out highway 8 and fish west port some, but near shore I tend to deviate further south toward the bay. Anyways onto a tip, your retrieve is seemingly fast, likely from the full sink/weighted fly. If cannot change lines try a smaller/lighter fly and/or you may try mono tippet instead of fluoro. In a pinch without the ability to change lines that’d be what I did if I was grabbing bottom fish too often. Out that way it’s cutties during this season, some rock fish, serf etc. the inland sound will offer you resident coho opportunities that wp won’t. You could use that 3wt floating single spey and a nice poly leader sink 5/6. This was your presentation is more jigged vertically than pulled laterally. You won’t encounter any cutt over 18, with most averaging 12-14 👍 3wt is just fine
@oak8728

And move a lot! Some spots out there hold fish longer and you’ll know when you find one but they zoom those waters

Fishing in the surf you should have an intermediate line with a 7.5 inch tapered leader. Full sink is better on a boat.
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan 3 года назад
Agreed - I need to invest in one...the only line on the Tibor was the full sink (and it sinks fast!)

Technically, you are in the Half Moon Bay area of Gray's Harbor, not the Pacific Ocean, but I digress. Rockfish hanging out by the rocks? Who knew? Wear flotation if you venture out on the South Jetty. If I wasn't so gimped up, and wanted to catch rockfish or maybe a Ling cod, I'd hike out the South Jetty maybe 3/4 of the way out. Not an easy trip, but those species tend to hanfmg along the rocks in easy casting distance. Surf perch congregate in the surf areas. With a fly rod you'd need near perfect (read absent) surf to reach them effectively, although I would not bet against you, Dan. Kelp Greenling and Cabazon are also caught along the outer South Jetty. You might be able to hook some Pile Perch along the dock pilings in the boat basin.

Is that a twisted leader setup?
@FlyFishDan
@FlyFishDan 3 года назад
Yes it is - there’s a fly shop locally that makes these furled leaders. I found them to be very useful when fishing salt, almost like a shock section - far fewer break offs. Cheers!.

@@FlyFishDan Wish I could give you some tips on surf perch on the fly. I have caught them on gear. On the fly I tried it once on a clamming trip and a big wind was in my face. Just couldn't get the fly out. I'm pretty certain you need to be in the surf which can be intimidating for sure. Look for trenches of deeper water parallel to the shore where they may be holding. Also slots that run perpendicular to the shore and drain the trenches. Good luck!
