Fly Fishing the Guadalupe River for Texas Rainbow Trout, 4K

I brave wading the 534 CFS water on the Guadalupe River in an attempt to fly fish for some trophy Texas Rainbow Trout. It was a wild day fly fishing the Guadalupe River with many Rainbow Trout getting off of my line but I managed to land a few Texas Rainbow Trout. I fish with a combination of nymphs and streamers to catch these hard to get rainbow trout.
These trophy trout are stocked in the Guadalupe River under the Canyon Lake Dam by the Guadalupe River Trout Unlimited (GRTU) and the Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD). These rainbow and brown trout provide some amazing fishing in the Texas Hill Country. I remove the barbs from my hook and practice catch and release.

Back in in the 90s,before Trout Unlimited city slickers took over.I used to catch large rainbows and even a five pounder once.I always used cheese and or Nightcrawlers. I would use my bait right in the midst of the fly fisherman. And load up on fish. they would usually get so pissed.I was just a teenager at the time.Some even called the warden on me😂😂😂.

Ha ha that’s pretty great. It so annoying when you are getting out fished and I have been there many time. How has the trout fishing changed in 30 years?

@@AnotherFishTail I don't get to fish it much anymore because I moved to rockport in 2001.But I have caught some the same way.I caught most of my bigger ones below the spillway in the deeper water before the first crossing at 306.I used to live in canyon city at canyon lake.I would just walk down to the river after school.Horseshoe falls is a hot spot.But now you cant access it because its private property.You can however fish there from a canoe or kayak.Its a nice place with a deep hole.It used to be a nice waterfall there but the flood smoothed it out and it isnt so dangerous. I really miss those days.Two of the state record stripers were also caught there on the river in Canyon lake.Last time I checked the state record trout was around 7 pounds.Some good memories. Ive just never been into flyfishing.Im way past due for a trip down the river though.And maybey the inside information will help you in your future quest.Take care✌

A strike indicator would help you with more hookups. Can use a big hopper or dry.

@@AnotherFishTail ok my friend who lives in Vietnam just told me they are probably still making them. Just that this JDM fishing gear is sometimes only made 1x year in fairly small batches and sells out fast. We should see more around January.

Look up a nymph fishing technique called "drop shotting". Your river looks perfect for it. This will take much of the guess work out of finding the trout. Cheers!
