Fly Fishing the Pere Marquette from a Drift Boat

One of my favourite days on the trip was arranged by my friend Ian Pinder who had the pleasure of a Drift Boat ride down the Bow River. I was not sure what to expect from a drift boat experience but was very excited about the prospect. We used Clint Anderson who also owns and runs the Red Moose Lodge where we were staying.
He has a score of years experience guiding and fishing on the Pere Marquette and also got the Brit sense of humour (very helpful when dealing with Ian and myself). We had a good deal of rain through the night and more was promised during the day. As far as days out fly fishing go this will stay with me for a long time. The definite advantage that you have fishing from a boat is access to fresh water. If an area was busy you simply up anchor and drift down a bit.
Having a guide early in the trip also helped with preparing for the rest of the weeks fishing. Let me know what your most memorable days fly fishing was in the comments section below.

My son and myself both fished in the American and Canada we used our sage 9/6” 7-9 weight bought cheap large arbor reels from Glasgow angling centre and we caught loads of salmon and trout your right about the price of flies very expensive compared to the UK and everything else to do with fishing but it’s the amount we caught that is most enjoyable and at the end of the day your very tired I think we enjoyed Canada more because there’s that many people who came from Scotland to carve out a life over there and they just can’t help you enough. I am enjoying your trip as it brings back good memories so tight lines for the future Lindsay back home in the UK.

Congradulations! Glad to see you made it to Michigan finally & fished the PMR. In the 1990's the PMR was only 5 miles + - from my home. I have fished the PMR and the White River fishing for trout( Brown Trout). looks like you had a fantastic week of King Salmon fishing. Next ime, come fish dry flies mid June-mid July during the great hex hatch in Michigan! Tight lines! Cheers! John

Lindsay this is a belter of a video. The editing, your advice, tips and information; interspersed with humility and self depreciation and passion. All this made watching interesting and fun. Looks like you had a ball buddy. Thanks for sharing it.

Thanks! 👍 The reel could have done with a few more twists on the drag if I am honest. The rod was spot on.

9 ft single hand rods are more common there, but I actually find a switch rod better, both wading and drifting. I've used both and find my #8 Sage Accel 11 ft switch with a Skagit line setup a better tool for fighting salmon because it's stronger and more limber than my 10-weight single handed Orvis Recon. There's plenty of room for all 11 feet because it roll casts so wonderfly. You can certainly do single-handed spey with a 9-ft rod but you lose fewer fish with the 11.

John thanks for a very informative post. As I have only dipped my toe into Salmon fishing it’s interesting to hear other options on gear.
