I started doing this tip with streamers and tube flies. Why not expand it into the world of dry/dropper fishing?
This easy tip has been helpful when hiking up mountains and trying to make quick adjustments that do MORE than make the fly sink deeper.
I almost always have nymphs with the fluorescent beads tied up and in the box, but sometimes I need more (or less) weight.
If you had infinite time and a suitcase for a fly box, you could have three different sized flies (HEAVY, MEDIUM, LIGHT), and go with that, but that means three slots in my box are now full with 3 (technically different) flies. That's why I started carrying a little bag of beads! Tie one size fly - fill the box - and adjust color and weight on the water!
Reasons I adjust weight: 1) size of the dry fly, 2) depth of the water, 3) and the desired color or shine (if you choose gold, silver, or copper beads).
DISCLAIMER This is an angler's trick not a fly tier's trick. I'm sure many tiers wouldn't like to see what the bead and fly combo looks like as it messes with the picture perfect finished fly.
Hope this tip helps you out on the water!
