For starters, let it be known that not all peacock dubbing is created equal! In this fly tying tutorial, I showcase various peacock dubbings, including the pros & cons of each. After each material is used, I also let you see how it looks when wet, which is a critical part of selecting the material for dubbing. Finally, I also tie with both natural and dyed peacock (to further confuse you!).
Thanks for viewing this RU-vid fly tying tutorial, and I encourage you to view my additional videos at the following website: www.troutandfeather.com
Feel free to leave any questions/comments on this RU-vid page, or you can email me: tcammisa@gmail.com

Great comparison video. Because I can't go fishing now, I take sample flies and tie them on mono and run them through a bucket of water. Then I can briefly see the movement and the translucency of the fly. I am happy you did the video, I happen to have most of the dubbings you had in the video. We must have similar taste when choosing material. All the best and thanks for taking the time. Sean

Thanks, Sean; I know there are many comparison videos out there, thus I wanted to put one out there to help those without a giant dubbing collection. It's definitely great to see the patterns when wet, and I am surprised by how much certain materials change. It does sound like we have similar taste in many areas, so I know I'm not the only crazy one out there! Thanks again, and I hope all is well with you and your wife. Tim

Tim, A great Fly tyer and fly fisherman from my area in NEPA , Jim Misiura devised a pattern which is made up of Jack Gartside Secret Stuff ultra fine hair....It dubbed onto a wet/nymph hook with a pinch wrapped like hackle is a killer pattern for trout especially during the caddis hatch....Its fished as an emerger and has been proven to work by this novice fly guy...Great Video...Thank You !

Very good stuff to know, Ken; thanks for sharing. I just watched Jim's video (GSS), and that pattern definitely looks deadly. I love the look that he gets from the Gartside Secret Stuff, and it definitely reminds me of peacock and its coloration. I appreciate the comment and positive words! Tim

Its guys like you and Jim who are taking me through this journey with your knowledge and expertise. When I was fly fishing back in the early 80's they guys I fished with on the big"D" would not tell you anything...well anything positive...To think the benefits of RU-vid and those who post are giving instruction today just blows my mind.. I remember fishing a fly given to me and at the end of the day that old buck demanded that fly back...It was all secrets...Still is to some extent but nothing like it was...I am grafetful for your assistance... Hope to see you on the Pa waters someday....

Ken Martin You're welcome, Ken; I appreciate you sharing that story. The notion of secrecy is something special in fly fishing, but there has to be that "give back" to the sport. I'm happy to share my passion with others, and am fortunate that so many chose to do so with me. Tim

I have a big smile in my face...lol The reason is your Orvis Premium Dubbing Wax. There is a Chinese manufacturer of this Wax and this Wax comes in exactly this little orange stick you shown, sometimes in a Light green or purple. There are many fly tying shops they do there own lable on this stick and sell them. I have the same two orange sticks and they labled as -Traun River Products- and the same from WASPI...there is a third one, called Tit-Lines and now i see this same stuff labled by Orvis...lol The prices for this sticks are: WASPI - 2,99 Orvis - 6,99 Traun River Products- 4,95 Tit-Lines - 2,95 So People watch out ... !

+Fliegenwerkstatt Wow! Great warning for everyone, and I appreciate the research. I have used the Wapsi and Orvis, and believe they are fine products; I will assume the others are similar, and hope everyone makes a decision that is right for them. Tim

Tim, what dubbing would you use to best represent the natural peacock for flies like the Prince Nymph, Griffth's Gnat, Copper John or Royal Wulff? Peacock is now on the CITES list so it may be harder to get for some tiers depending on where you are in the world. Can any of the dubbings you used be tied densely and then trimmed short to look like natural peacock?

Roger, that's an excellent question, and there is not one exact match I can recommend...yet! Semperfli has a product called Straggle Legs (size: micro) that is similar to a chenille; it comes super close to mimicking peacock herl. I also use Siman Peacock Dubbing, and if you place it in a dubbing loop, it comes really close, too. I hope that helps, and more importantly, I hope all is going well with you. It was an honor to be on "Ask About Fly Fishing," and you do an excellent job with the show. Tim www.troutandfeather.com

i know this video is from 2014 but your touch dubbing really is not correct..touch dubbing mostly is used on smaller sized flies without using a dubbing loop..your touch dubbing you left out the important part,,to spin the bobbin after you stuck the material to the thread,,same as a split thread technique..it gives you a buggy dubbed type of chenille..without spinning the bobbin and trapping the fibers the fly would fall completly apart..no dubbing is lose in the package..its lose or tight depending how you apply it..theres only long fibered dubbing which is very easy to apply or short fibered dubbing which gives alot of guys trouble such as arizona synthetic peacock dubbing which you didnt mention...

Thanks for the comments, though I'm unsure where in the video I was displaying touch dubbing. I believe I referenced that it's a great technique to use with some of this dubbing, and you're correct that the thread needs spun after applying. Also, I prefer to apply wax first when utilizing a touch dub technique. Here's a page that explains the process to others: www.swedneckflyfishing.com/touchdubbing_steps.htm Thanks again for taking a moment to comment. Tim

Tim Cammisa at 4:15 where you said I’m going to show u another technique that’s called touch dubbing. Lol. You waxed the thread and was using the slf prism. U just stuck the material and wrapped it with spinning the bobbin and trapping the material.

You're correct, and thanks for pointing out the time. I only showed the initial step to the touch dub technique. The technique I showed...well we can call it Half-touch dub! Ha ha! ;-)
