Larry is a true legend. What an honor to fly with him and what an amazing teacher he is. Every pilot watching this wish they could afford to go to Larry and tell him "train me" ! Fun to dream huh?

When you look up "Legend" in the dictionary, it should just say - Larry Salganek. What an amazing privilege it must have been to fly with that man. Once you grow old and look back at incredible memories, I bet it won't be flying an L-39 or Mig 15, it will be the fact you had chance to learn from guys like him. Great video - thanks for sharing.

I've wanted to pilot an aircraft for about 35 years of my 43-year life. Still haven't done it, somehow life just gets in the way. You are living a massive dream for so many of us, and I thank you for all the awesome videos over the years! I live vicariously through all the pilots like you who share through these videos.

Go down to your local airport and ask if they offer a Discovery Flight. They’re usually relatively inexpensive and they’ll let you take the controls.

Got my first rating at 50, got a Pt.135 airline job at 60, retired at 67 -- had a blast! (Never attended a flight school - it can be done.) Realizing the dreams of one's youth late in life is tremendously rewarding.

Bravo Matt! In 2018, I made a 3-day training on L-39 at the Breitling Jet Team in France. For a small C172 VFR pilot like me, it was a blast piloting such a machine from the front seat! The plane was surprisingly easy to fly. I thought I was flying an X-Wing :-) it was awesome

That was an awesome ride. I love the L-39 since I saw the Patriots jet team a few years ago. Beautiful aircraft. AND, what a CFI. Calm and firm instructions. His knowledge is so amazing, and his instruction just instills confidence in the student. Great job.

Right. Covid came and I lost my funding, lost my health and mental wellness....sure, I'll recover MAYBE by 50. A bit late in life to find another minimum wage job for a maximum wage loan. Positive attitudes and reinforcement only goes so far before you start applying to unrealistic expectations.

Absolutely is. If I had the money to do anything I pleased whenever I wanted, then the only limiting factor would be myself and those doubts, or just out of laziness. But the issue is that I have to trade my time for money to survive, and pay bills like the majority of the population. I like Matt but I personally believe he is the exception, not the rule.

I used to watch your videos a couple years ago, then I got onto other things. FFWD to the last day ever of the Reno Air Races 2023 and I'm watching the jets race and the announcer is saying "Guthmiller in 2nd..." and I'm like, "wait...is that *that* Guthmiller guy I used to watch?" I couldn't believe it! You have come a long way from this introductory flight to winning 2nd place at the final day ever of the Reno Air Races! Heartfelt congratulations! Keep reaching for the sky Matt! I imagine one day, I could see you earning your astronaut wings and commanding a cool spacecraft!

Congrats Matt! I eagerly look forward to my L-39 experience as well. Here in TX, there is a group that flies out of Georgetown. One day Frankie will fly up here to an Airplanes and Coffee with an empty back seat and I will have my chance... This was an EXCELLENT video. There are very few who can create a 32 minute video and hit 100% watch time. Job very well done.

I think this has been my favorite video from you so far Matt, especially where you talk about doubt being the reason we don't achieve. When I resumed flying about twenty-five years ago, a friend say, "I wish I could learn to fly." He said it maybe fifty times. I told him to either learn to fly, or shut up about learning to fly. He learned to fly. We owned an airplane together for 16 years.

I too have been contemplating training in a jet like the L-39… (One thing is for sure: it won’t be a MiG-29 in Russia for the foreseeable future…)

IIRC there was a tourist company that gave rides in a MiG-29 over there... Definitely was on the bucket list, but we'll have to see now. This current situation could lead to more people having those jets in eastern Europe though. Of course, we'll have to wait for them to hit the private markets, but if Eastern Europe is arming up right now, then when things cool down the arms will hit the market.

The L39 Albatross is a beautiful aircraft, i flew in one at warbirds over Wanaka airshow New Zealand, fantastic experience I'll never forget it

@@nickmininno not really. Some countries use it as a light ground attack aircraft and some for civ air traffic policing. A big difference. It does not have a gun, it does not have a radar and is not capable of mounting guided munitions.

@@thrustvectoring8120 It can be armed with a pair of K-13 missiles to provide a basic air defense capability and can be used for light ground attack. it is an aircraft that can be utilized for combat and its a jet --> fighter jet

@@Heneling It has to be equipped with targeting systems first because base model has none. The original doesn't even have a sight. It was made as a trainer, not ground attack, nor fighter plane. There is a ground attack version, it is called L-159 ALCA. But the point is that it is extremely basic, it was made as a trainer and it is extremely bad at everything except training people how to use jet aircraft. (not fight in jet aircraft, how to fly them) It has woefully inadequate power, it can only carry 300kg of load and has 1.6t of thrust and max take off weight of 4.5t. It is reasonably agile as a trainer but load it and it turns into a snail. L-159 has Honeywell engine with double the thrust and actually a ground attack radar so it is much more useable but still laughably inadequate for any kind of air engagements.
