Kendrick's verse perfectly represents the stubbornness of life in the context of the album's concept. This just shows that FlyLo's features/collabs are meaningful, fleshed-out, and carefully selected in a way you just don't see that often modern music. Combine that with his mature production aesthetic and serious instrumental enthusiasm. Great record.

This entire album, as an experience, reminds me of some of my friends descriptions of their experiences with DMT. As a drug, it scares the shit out of me, but this album gives me the impression of an out of body journey, someone who is forced to witness their death and by doing so, comes to understand the importance of their life.

@@yourmusiclover9205 i love life in general (with or without drugs) but drugs enhance experience of life itself, it's not about whether or not someone needs drugs to enjoy things, but psychoactive chemicals can enhance experiences past a point you wouldn't even be able to imagine otherwise. Try to open your mind a littlw you might find that trying different things can expand your perspective and open new doors in your life. My life has become significantly better from use of psychedelics in general, as it allowed me to overcome difficulties in my life by exposing me to different neuropathways in a more directly aware manner. Of course, everything has its downsides, especially if used irresponsibly, but choosing wether or not to do drugs is a choice not dissimilar to other choices one makes in life.

@@thecooestlguyever I’m worried for you, if you can’t enhance life without drugs to the extent that you believe drugs do there are other ways, better ways, to do what you explained on your later comment on the topic. It also begs the question why do you even need to feel that way, because the times that you’re not in that magical world you think you’re in you just feel terrible. You can’t have good without bad, people that use drugs in that way that you do fail to understand that.

This album is what you get when you put jazz fusion, hip hop, electronic and experimental music together to create an amazing spiritual experience of death. I was pleasantly surprised by the way the album starts of, it just unexpectedly explodes into space and stays there until the album is over. Didn't have an issue with the tracks being short though. My favorite FlyLo LP so far and definitely my favorite of the year so far. This is modern day jazz. Highlights of the album in my opinion: Theme, Cold Dead, Never Catch Me (especially the outro, that shit's amazing), Turkey Dog Coma, Coronus The Terminator, Decent Into Madness, The Boys Who Died In Their Sleep, The Protest Thanks for reviewing this album, Mr. Ebony Poontango

Here's a bit of trivia: The vocal samples used on the track "Turtle" are actually from the theme to "The Bird with the Crystal Plumage" composed by Ennio Morricone. The film itself is an early example of the italian giallo (stylized horror) genre and the directorial debut of Dario Argento. So even that sample is in keeping with the death theme of the album.

exactly, i didn't think it was anti-climactic, it felt like walking thru the gates of heaven or some shit, it really ended on a uplifting note which dope. i wish the last track was longer though. but thats the point, to me it adds replay value, as soon as the album ended i wanted to listen to it again. it was like watching a really good movie and being sad it was over

Honestly think in due time Until the Quiet Comes will be considered Flying Lotus's magnum opus. Not only does it grow on you, but it feels more and more personal with each listen. The album never fails to give me chills. I think You're Dead! finds a perfect balance of pursuing interesting experimental ideas while at the same time maintaining a very distinct style FlyLo has been known for. It's lively and appropriately poignant at times, but never overbearing. It succeeds at everything it attempts, and it's just a really fun listen. I have no complaints but for some reason I just don't ever see it being my favorite from FlyLo.

Good review, Anthony. I personally have 'You're Dead' on my short list for albums of the year, at least as it currently stands, and I wasn't even a terribly big fan of Cosmogramma and some of FlyLo's previous efforts. Whilst this thought may make some jazz aficionados cringe, I do think that this LP, much more so than any of FlyLo's previous works, will serve as an entry into modal jazz and jazz fusion for some people, and at least some of that accessibility can be attributed to the shortness and diversity of a lot of the tracks.

I completely agree, just wish it was longer, I wish he would create a 1hr version of this album. Fly lo has the gift to take his listeners on a journey with dynamic and inventive landscapes, and I don't think he is giving enough credit to his creations by cutting them so short.

The music video for 'ready err not' have a whole new feel to that particular song. After listening to it before the music video came out I thought it was a quirky addition to the album but the video put such a dark slant on the song. So interesting that flylo can totally change the mood of a song just by making a video for it.

aside from the collab with Kendrick, i am not too happy with Flying Lotus's new album, out of 19 tracks, perhaps 3 truly stand out. i am profoundly sad as fuck, i think Cosmogramma is one of the best albums of all time. this album feels darker and sinister than before (which is alright i guess because he's going for a morbid theme but it turned me off a lot of the tracks), i am so confused as to why you would call this album "more upbeat", it is definitely not. the hip hop beats took a backseat to a jazz that's too heavily distorted and isn't as synergistic with the other musical elements, like it was in past albums. the blues guitar is sometimes replaced by an overbearing power metal guitar that sounds awful within Flylo's context. the whimsical sense of wonder, magic and spirituality experienced in his past albums is rarely found in this one, there's more of a sense of dread and roughness. what happened here? there is no way this is an 8/10, i'm sorry i always find myself returning to his past albums to listen to them again, but other than Never Catch Me, Eyes Above, and The Protest, the rest of this album is forgettable. the manipulation of string instruments in Cosmogramma, the harps, the jazz, the sampling of ping pong balls and heart monitors, the flawless modulation and basslines in Until the Quiet Comes, the "laser" sounds ... this is really one of his worst albums yet
@FFIIInerd
@FFIIInerd 9 лет назад
***** Understand that when Flying Lotus makes an album, his albums are intrapersonal(which takes place within a person's mind to clarify or analyze about a situation) Cosmogramma(One of his best albums) is an album that is going to be listened by an individual personally. You having friends over getting ready to get turnt up on a Flying Lotus album is a major no no. And FLying Lotus realizes this, and in an interview, the interviewer asked "Why don't you play the songs how they were played on the album in your shows?" Flylo replied and said "The album was meant to be more of a personal experience, doing shows allows for a more upbeat atmosphere that you can enjoy listening to with friends."
@FFIIInerd
@FFIIInerd 9 лет назад
Those past albums that you spiritually experienced are his PAST albums. "You're Dead" is not "Cosmogramma" or "Until the quiet comes," it's its OWN album. If you haven't noticed by now, Flying Lotus is an experimental artist that likes to try new things, and "You're Dead" is his new thing. Don't expect to get an experience of spirituality on every single album because if you do, you will be highly disappointed like you are now.

he didn't really mention that this is a JAZZ album (can't expect a 20something white man who know who HH is either) and if you go in wanting hip hop beats you may be disappointed, HOWEVER, it is one of the best albums i've heard this year and as previously stated from the horses mouth its meant to be listened to in sequence-track times be damned. anthony is always worried about fucking NUMBERS, man. anyways i'm going to see him on sunday & i'm psyched :P

Totally a Jazzy album (and Fant did mention it many times). But FlyLo isn't known for a more traditional Jazzesque style. He's known and loved for his electronic music, guided by Jazz sensibilities. It's a decent album. But, not what I know and love about FlyLo.

I was personally disappointed by this. Most of the songs just feel like interludes. It sounds fantastic but the songs themselves deliver very little most of the time. Jazz fusion is a genre that needs time to breathe. Doesn't work with such short tracks.

Anthony's point of how certain songs build up incredibly and then just end, maybe that's the point, how death is a sudden end to a vibrant life, sometimes far sooner than people expect. I'm not saying this is intentional or even the case, but it's definitely possible!
