I tend to agree with that. The sterile cockpit doesn’t bother me in most flying conditions. Unless it’s a serious instrument approach or something.

As a pilot myself, a sterile cockpit below 10,000 ft in a single pilot light jet is definitely NOT necessary however, I do think that a sterile cockpit during takeoff and landing is a good idea. With the cockpit automation these days, flying is almost like driving a car only easier and less stressful. Ryan, your wife is lovely, you obviously married up. 😁

Why does the pilot say “rotate “ when they liftoff?
@TheRunwayRyan
@TheRunwayRyan 6 месяцев назад
In a jet aircraft, we calculate a set of speeds for every flight. These are variable for each takeoff based on the temperature, weight, runway condition (dry, wet, snow, etc), elevation, and winds. The first speed is V1. If anything bad happens before that speed, we abort the takeoff and stop on the runway. After V1, no matter what happens we continue into the air. The pilot states "V1" and removes their hand from the thrust levers to prevent the urge to pull them back if something catastrophic happens after that speed. The next speed is VR - "Rotate". That is the speed at which we pull back on the yoke and begin the liftoff phase of the takeoff. We verbalize these speeds so we know when they occur. In a normal takeoff you will hear "V1", followed shortly by "Rotate".

A limitation not to arm until the ILS needle comes alive? Respectfully, I don’t think that’s correct. I think it states you have to be within 90° of the final approach course in bound before you can arm it.
@TheRunwayRyan
@TheRunwayRyan 6 месяцев назад
I was surprised to find this limitation too. I wish I could attach a photo here, but it won't let me. The Flight Safety limitations cards state "When conducting an approach that utilizes a localizer (ILS, LOC, LOC-BC, LDA, SDF), the approach mode (APPR) must not be selected until the course deviation indicator (CDI) has clearly moved away from a full scale deflection and the aircraft is within the published service value for the approach. Failure to observe this limit may result in capture of a false localizer lobe, resulting in incorrect lateral guidance." I'm not sure if you have access to the FSI training cards, but it is card L-25A if you do. This would also be listed in the AFM limitations, but I don't have that reference page in front of me.
@sixwillwin

I don’t know if you’re referring to Carrie or not. If you are, I can assure you she isn’t shallow minded. She runs the largest ER in the state and has more than 200 direct reports. Also, one of the greatest attributes a jet pilot can have is the ability to multitask, so her talking doesn’t bother me at all. We were making fun of the people who watch and think it is some dangerous disaster that she speaks.

Nice video. I will refrain from speaking my mind about others giving your wife a hard time for speaking below 10K. Mind your own biz is all I'll say....

Thank you! They aren't wrong, and truly I never told her in the past. She knows now though.

You can try, not sure if that will work or not! Good luck!

I was a little concerned at the start when your wife asked were you were now - but I guess that was more for our benefit than hers. And never tell a woman she can't chat until 10,000ft. That is simply unfair.

We flew from little rock to Monroe and then to Bozeman. I couldn’t remember where our “middle stop” was (Monroe)

Haha! We had to go pick some passengers up on the way to our final destination. Carrie doesn’t always know where the middle stop will be.

I think I edited out most of that scene. I also suffer from a lack of geographical knowledge. I only found out after I became a pilot! It gets very confusing in the New England area, especially when you've always lived in the center of the country!

@@TheRunwayRyanI even knew before getting training for microlight license! But we have GPS and charts thankfully. We fly only VFR so I get to know my home area better every flight.

@@TheRunwayRyan I've meant to ask you if you ever get to fly much in New England, I grew up in Maine...

Sterile until 10k, man, my wife would need to stay quiet the whole trip? hmm.. i may need to enforce that. let your wife ask questions, and if you can answer, answer, if not, hold the finger up for quiet.. Tell those Karen's to STFU

Haha, I agree. It doesn’t bother me and I think she should be able to ask questions. Just like you said, if I need her to be quiet I ask her to be! Very politely of course. . . And she doesn’t have to be quiet unless she wants to. . .
