FlySky fs-t6 Antenna Mod
In this video I show how I went about modifying my FlySky fs-t6 so I could use different antennas. It turned out to be a very simple mod that will hopefully improve the range of the controller.

My compliments to you, Andrew.I have done as you advise, but I used a 380 mm 16dbi double-loaded stylus. Not being able to find any RG316 here in Melbourne, Australia and not wanting to wait for weeks to get some from overseas, I was compelled to use some RG58, which I managed to extract from the plastic cover and re-cover with heat shrink, elimenating is such manner about 1mm in cable diameter. The job was not the esiest but it worked. With the pissy stock dipole the range was 70-80 metres, while I am now very happy with a 480 METRES RANGE! Thank you indeed. Cheers from Bruno

I did the mod with the 5db FrSky antenna. I didn't have any range problems with the stock antenna. When tested on the ground the range was easily 500m and i guess i could got more. When tested the new antenna i was 650m away and it still worked but i ran out of space to go further. Notice that there were buildings and trees inbetween so i didn't have clear line of sight. www.dropbox.com/s/muzs6fatm9z99pu/range_test.png?dl=0 All in all for me more than enough range for line of sight flying.

I just did this to my flysky fs-t6. After I showed some people on a forum, they said iit was a bad idea. It might even burn out the radio inside.... I haven't had any problems so far though... Thanks for showing us the Mod...
@andrewmcneil

Hi Chris glad it helped you I am new to the hobby myself so I am not a expert on all the hardware. Now this mod lets you add different antennas adding greater range and functionality and I bet that a radio with a SMA connector like this costs a lot more than £40. All this mod does is allow for better signal propagation it does not increase power from the RF module or affect the radio in anyway.

Few month ago, I did the same for my FlySky fs-t6 Trans, I use the original receiver, and added a 5db 2.4Ghz Antenna to my transmitter, the range was increased about 30%, it go from 250m to 350m, after that I added a 2.4G Mini 2W Power Amplifier Module, the range was increased about almost 50%, it go from 350m to 550m, and it's not bad at all.But be careful, never turn on your transmitter power amplifier without adding the antenna, it's work like a resistance, and make sure that the amplifier battery is full each time you go out. (NB: the test was made in open area, the transmitter was fixed on a tripod and I walked holding the receiver connected to an ESC+motor+battery).

Many thanks for the video! I dropped my FS-T6 which broke the antenna and of course severed the co-ax. So I just did this mod, initial test at about 150m fine but will test further when I have a chance, if i get 300m strong signal it'll be better than stock..

Great video. Is there a specific antenna type you would recommend for best range in all directions? For 2.4ghz? I have a similar radio, but with an upgraded module (FrSky DJT) that works great, but it just has a small standard 6dbi antenna. I also have a 9DBI but it's way to big. I'm looking for a better option. Any suggestions?

I tested my range with the original antenna and signal cut out at .35 miles... about 1800 feet. I performed the modification using RG316 and a 10dbi 2.4ghz antenna. the range test with the new antenna gave nearly identical results. I gained 50 feet or so. not sure how that happened. maybe I'll try a different antenna...

how do you bind the flysky fs-ia6 receiver to this transmitter?
@Got5pl
@Got5pl 8 лет назад
+DenMark Phan Really? It would have been far easier and faster for you to simply type that question into google. Than to ask here. There are countless threads, Plenty Info out there for that very question. Search first, If you can not find the info you need, Then ask. Plug bind cable into bind plug on receiver, Apply power. Red light will be blinking. Press and hold Bind button on transmitter, And turn transmitter ON. Red light will go solid on receiver to indicate successful bind. Unplug power to receiver. Remove bind cable. Done.

+Vx Commodore what is this google thing you speak of? seriously, i did the research and performed the actions you listed above. i have the crappy chinese manual but you know how notorious they are for being incomplete. the light continues to blink. I was trying to see if there was something special i missed or correct sequence specific to these two items. thus the question i posted above. reaching out to the on-line world is just another step in my research process after other dead ends have been reached. trying to determine if i have a defective unit. thanks for your input and time but chill on the holier than thou attitude. cheers!
@Got5pl
@Got5pl 8 лет назад
+DenMark Phan No problem. It's usually a case of people to lazy to research. So make others do the hard work. Sorry, Just assumed you were one. If you followed the above and its still blinking, Then I'd say you either have a defective Receiver, Or Transmitter. Most of the time, Its the receiver. But you will just need to troubleshoot to figure out which one. Just make sure you're bind cable is linking the ground pin to the signal pin on the bind port, Unlikely, But it could be a bad bind pin/plug.

@johnlannigan9831
@johnlannigan9831 11 месяцев назад
At 3:07 you mentioned 'About 2.5db gain' You need to clarify things here a little. A dipole has exactly 0db gain, however if you are referring to 'dbi' a half wave dipole (end fed in this case) does have a gain of 2.5dbi. However, dbi is a theroretical figure and in real life is absolutely impossible to achieve, it's a computer model that assumes, zero SWR, zero resistance, zero capacitance, zero inductance and zero cable loss. RG316 isnt the best choice even for short runs like this. Worst scenario looking at the specs, you can expect around 0.2db cable loss and 0.1db loss from using an RP-SMA connector. The Chinese like to use the dbi figures because it makes their poor quality antenna's look better then they actually are. I have the same transmitter and its possible to get in excess of 3 to 3.5 miles with the right antenna set up. I could get further, but with my drone battery, I would run out of power before I run out of signal.

I did a continuity test between the ground pad and the antenna pad and for some reason there is a connection between them. I checked both pads and it looks like they are not touching. Is there something wrong with the transmitter?
@crabtrap
@crabtrap 6 лет назад
yes you have a prob. there should be zero connection/continuity between the sheilded ground wire and the core wire. i think this is the cause of some low distances with the T6 reports. i fly large sailplanes with min and high alt and longer distance with stock TX set up. proper ant polarization is crucial.

Great video! I ordered one a few days ago and I've been reading some bad experiences with lost contact at ~100-150m, which seems TERRIBLE to me. So I will be attempting this mod for sure. Is there any way you could increase the power output too? Btw, did you do any tests so far regarding range? How's your quad build going?
@ibsn87
@ibsn87 9 лет назад
I have one of these, and I have experienced drop outs around 100-150m. I'm new to this quad scene and it was quite scary watching my hard work drop out of the air. I managed to get enough reception to soften the landing! Interestingly, the day before I had no issues flying much further and over a lake. It has me nervous now! I can't find anywhere what the "expected" range is for something like this. I have also mounted the rx aerial vertical below the quad. And I have also learned that you should have the tx aerial bent at the 90. So, might try this mod and see how I go! How far are people flying with the standard equipment?
@B.Bogdan
@B.Bogdan 9 лет назад
+ibsn87 Are you using the stock receiver? From my long reading about this problem, it seems that a good combo would be another receiver plus this remote. Also, one of my theories is that when you go full throttle, the lipo voltage gets too low for the receiver and it reboots. Are you using 2s or 3s? If you're using 3s, my theory goes down. :)
@ibsn87
@ibsn87 9 лет назад
+Bogdan Boeru Yes, i'm using the stock receiver. (Can you use other receivers with this remote, I just read something that said you cant??) As for voltage, your theroy goes down, MAYBE. (Im using highest C rating 3s nanotech batteries I can get. ranging from 1300-1800-2200mah and it was doing it from a fresh charge) - the only change since the day before was the video transmitter was swapped out from a 200mw TS5823 fpv transmitter to a Skyzone 3d Dual transmitter - more interference???? Shouldn't be considering on is 5.8 and the t6 is a 2.4? I ran the quad on a laptop power supply before I owned batteries, and I could get 40% throttle. before it would drop voltage and reset. I haven't had enough time to figure out if i need to cycle the throttle to re-engage it, i just try to keep it upright and recover! You have me curious, I Might be able to test this "reset" theory with my new goggles, as i should have audio, and I think it beeps when it resets...... So I should hear it - maybe. I'm right this minute looking into failsafe options for the t6 transmitter and cc3d setup, but im not sure if I can have say, x percent throttle so it will decent slowly - instead of dead falling! Need to do lots more reading! Have you got your transmitter yet/ done any testing/ found any info that would suggest expected line of sight range for this setup? Cheers!
@ibsn87
@ibsn87 9 лет назад
Bogdan Boeru im also going to try and walk away with the throttle on and see how far I can get away from the transmitter? I need to restore some confidence in my setup! Ignorance was bliss the day before!!!
@B.Bogdan
@B.Bogdan 9 лет назад
+ibsn87 I haven't got mine yet, I'm checking the tracking number 5 times a day, but all I get for a week is that it left China. The wait is killing me, because I can't fly my quad without it. Some people say that the receiver must support failsafe, not the transmitter or the board. I'm using CC3D as well, I'll check more into that. There is a video on yt with a range test, that goes to about 150-160meters. Others have tested it to 800m without a problem. There are two RF chips in these remotes, one with 150mA of transmitting power, one with about 80mA. It depends on the luck you're going to have when getting it. I would do a range test myself, keep a friend on the phone near your quad with the props off, then walk away. If the motors stop, it's clear that there's a connection problem. Regarding the protocol, it seems that this protocol is very common and other receivers should work with it(don't know which yet, I'll check). I for one would really like to know if it's a receiver problem or a transmitter problem. If it's true what others said, that having different receivers(some FrSky ones) solved the dropouts, then it might not be the transmitter to blame. P.S. How much does your drone weigh with all the FPV equipment(and without battery)? Mine is at 455gr w/o battery, but I used 30A ESC's that are really large.

Hi, I would like to increase my FS-i6 range. I'm wondering if using a 7dbi patch antenna from Frsky (www.banggood.com/fr/Wholesale-FrSky-7dB-Patch-Module-Antenna-p-68704.html?rmmds=search) would be better or not than your 11dbi stock antenna ? Besides, I would like to know if I can use a cloverleaf antenna instead of the two small antennas on the receiver (X6B which is pretty much the same as the ia6b) in order to increase the range ?
