NATO Chooses a rifle round. A story of international harmony NATO: Right guys I think we should all use the same bullets and service rifles USA/rest of NATO: sure sounds like a great idea Belgium: we've got a lovely rifle Rest of NATO: yeah it's a lovely rifle Britain: we've got a really good .280 cartridge Rest of NATO: This is coming together nicely, don't you just love all this international cooperation Britain: Urr belgium can you make it a bullpup rifle? FN: ...No Britain: ok we'll make our own bullpup Rest of NATO: so much for international cooperation USA: we've decided a soldier needs a 30 caliber round! that little British thing has no stopping power. Rest of NATO: what like that little fat 7.62 the soviets have started using. USA: kinda. Imagine a 30-06 but a little bit shorter. Rest of NATO: So exactly like what we're all using already? USA: yep Rest of NATO: but we said we wanted an intermediate cartridge Canada: we're happy with the British round if the US are Rest of NATO: shut up Canada you're not helping. OK so we all use the FN rifle in the USA's big old fashioned calibre. Britain: Our bullpup doesn't work in .308 :( oh well, we'll just adopt our own .280 instead. Rest of NATO: Fine go sulk on your little island we'll all use the FAL in .308 Britain: Urrr labour lost the last election, Churchill said we'll take the FAL, he says standing by NATO is more important than our bullpup.... we will get one someday you watch Rest of NATO: Great! so we all use the FAL in .308 USA: we like our M14 better Rest of NATO: isn't that just an old M1 with a box magazine thats worse than the FAL in every way. USA: No it won our trial! Rest of NATO: so we just rechambered the FAL in your cartridge for you and your not gonna use it? USA: Yep Rest of NATO: (Facepalms) ------------ 8 years later------- USA: we're gonna use this little tiny .223 now, turns out soldiers don't need to shoot stuff a long way away afterall. Its great you can carry 3 times the ammo too! Rest of NATO: So all that talk about needing a full power rifle round and the British .280 being underpowered 8 years ago? USA: ... sorry, my bad...
@Grouuumpf
@Grouuumpf 9 лет назад
btw, from what I have read from a few sources, the FAL was orignially designed for an intermediate round, don't know if it was the german kurz or the .280 or something else, and they had to take it to its limit to accept the .308 under NATO (well, US) requirement
@garethfairclough8715
@garethfairclough8715 9 лет назад
Loïc Rebts It was the .280 British that was originally made for the British EM-2 bullpup as I recall.
@markshul03
@markshul03 9 лет назад
Please don't ever call the .308 old fashioned. It is ballistically superior to any round in its class. Also the M14 isn't "inferior to the FAL in every way" the M14 was a great rifle, was it as good as the FAL when it comes to what the U.S was gonna use it for? absolutely not. But in a DMR role it has proven itself many times. Thats why the Us still uses it.
@gazzmilsom
@gazzmilsom 9 лет назад
mark shuler I was poking fun at NATO the US and UK in particular not making a statement of fact. The .308 as a service rifle cartridge was an outdated concept by the end of ww2 because it had been recognised that most soldiers just dont need a full powered 30 calibre cartridge. Its a very good round but not for an assault rifle which is what NATO wanted. The M14 is a good rifle and is better than the FAL when used as a DMR (mounting optics and being match accurate are not areas and FAL is strong in) but it was clear to NATO countries that the only reason it beat the FAL in US trials was because the M14 was an American rifle and the US military were not about to issue a foreign service rifle. The whole process was a total farce made even more funny by the US adopting the 5.56 not long afterwards.
@markshul03
@markshul03 9 лет назад
Gareth Milsom Its hard to call a round that is still being used heavily over 50 years later outdated a few years into its inception. It was outdated as a standard cartridge sure, but in the areas it was used it was in no way outdated, nor is it to this day. It is the best battle rifle, dmr, medium sniper, and lmg round in the world. Its funny though that people are condemning the US for choosing the M14 when it was still an excellent rifle and has outlived its FAL counterpart in most cases. But at least we're not using a round like the 7.62x54r that was introduced in the late 1800's. They honestly had to introduce design feature in the PKM in order to feed the rimmed cartridge. Not to mention the fact that they are still using shitty steel casings. Say what you want, America has made a lot better improvements and updates than most.

The standard metric-dimensioned FAL was manufactured in South Africa, (where the FAL is known as the R1) at (formerly known as) Lyttelton Engineering Works, Lyttelton, Pretoria. (Lyttelton Ingenieurswerke in Afrikaans), a subsidiary part of the commercial network from Armscor. It then became the Systems division of the Land Systems Group of Denel. A copy of the first R1 made in South Africa and received on behalf of the state by the then Prime Minister, Hendrik Verwoerd on September 23, 1964, it is on display in the SA Museum of Military History in Saxonwold, Johannesburg.

Canada was the first country to adopt the FN FAL and was also the country that changed it to the inch pattern . This was the rifle I carried in the infantry and it was designated the C1 in semi auto only The C2 was the squad automatic with a heavy barrel and the forearm folded down to a bipod. The C1 and C2 had a walnut stock and was extremely accurate. It was the Cadillac of assault rifles.

When did you serve? Did you have the synthetic or the wood furniture?
@TheLegumMagister
@TheLegumMagister 10 лет назад
James Kachman 1983-1989. We had the plastic furniture, but, as you probably know, it is possible to substitute the stocks - as they come in different lengths (over a limited range admittedly), so each rifle was 'butt sized' (that phrase probably means something completely different these days...) and each rifle was thoroughly 'fired in' to establish reliability. Every three months we fired off all the ammunition we had been carrying round and loaded with fresh. Good days. Thanks for your query.
@jameskachman3692
@jameskachman3692 10 лет назад
***** Heh, I actually watched the training films for basic marksmanship with the SLR just for funsies, so I know about the different buttstocks. That sounds wonderful, though. Did you have any experience with the L85?
@TheLegumMagister
@TheLegumMagister 10 лет назад
James Kachman Yes, although is wasn't issued per se, but I did get to shoot a couple of them at Bisley in 1988 (I think). We were underwhelmed, somewhat. The cleaning kit for example was, by comparison with the SLR quite complex, with multiple components, but not 'squaddie proof'... The 5.56 round itself (no idea what weight bullet we were using, but probably lighter than is issued currently) did not reliably register/record a hit on the ETR (Electronic Target Range) targets that fell down when hit (one could, in the alternative 'skip' a bullet in low, hoping a combination of bullet/sand/richochet would register) but we had some frustrating experiences, and we so we reverted to our SLR's for this phase, which did not suffer from a lack of 'impact' at the target end. The L85 (SA80) was, however, extremely accurate out to 300yds or so, courtesy of its optical sight and I did manage to salvage something in the way of a small prize for a high score out to that distance. The later revised rifle, as rebuilt by H&K is a different animal entirely and an entirely better engineered bit of kit. TLM

As was the C1A1 I used...except for that half-body cover on our version, which allowed for the odd bit of hot carbon flying into one's face when firing blanks. ;) The clip holder stamped into its front was useful, as my Pl. Sgt. put it, good for "a quick reload when you run empty and Ivan's coming over the hill".

Great video of a fantastic weapon. I first got the chance to fire the British issue version the SLR (Self Loading Rifle) back when I was a cadet (14 year old), then carried one as my service weapon in the British military, went on to be issued the original version as well as some of the South African manufacture in Rhodesia & later South Africa then on for a time in South West Africa (Namibia) as well as a few other African locations & much later down in the South Atlantic during the Falkland's "conflict".What a fantastic, totally reliable combat weapon, in all conditions, experiencing only a few stoppages in all that time, most due to bad (service issue) ammo but when it went bang the guy on the receiving end had a really bad day. Even when using the standard military issue ammunition this weapon had power to spare, being able to punch through mud huts (All the way plus occupant/s), most types of brick, stone or concrete walls, again with enough power left over to make someone's good day behind cover a bad one, hard wood trees (My thickest being approx. 14" diameter) & one huge termite mound which was over 24" thick. I carried other weapons during those times, the likes of the AK47 & the HK G3 but for some reason always found myself coming back to take out one of the trusty FNs. I'm now 58 years old & have been in a few situations, most of which involved me using one of these weapons. I must have made the right choice as I'm still here to tell you about it. FN FAL, great gun & a good battlefield friend. Thanks again for posting this video & bringing back some old memories.

Darryl Beckett my father was an argentinian marksmen, using the full auto model. Thankfully right as he was being deployed the war ended, otherwise I probably wouldnt be here. Falklands, like any other conflict, was horrible. But we all agree on something. FAL: reliable, accurate, powerful and relatively lightweight. Perhaps how a modern combat rifle should be. Outstanding weapon. From spain, i salute you, and i salute the FAL. Thx for that amazing flashback to earlier days.

Andy Young - I saw a foto of the paras in The Falklands after an assault. One of the paras had an LMG mag in his SLR. Ive heard a lot of rumour about how these mags fit the SLR but are un reliable because the mag spring on the LMG is softer since the rounds are gravity fed and so just 'spring assisted' rather than pushed upwards as in the SLR mag. It was fascinating to see in the foto at least one para confident enough that the risk of a stoppage was worth the 50% extra round capacity and use the LMG mag on his SLR at war ;) Whats your experience of this ?
@lauriestlyon8773

@@rigsbyL1 It's true you could fit a 7.62 Been may in but you risked feed issues and long term the mag catch would give so the gunmetal screw would have to be replaced with a steel one which would bigger the thread. Armourers would go nuts! I first fired this rifle at aged 14 asa cadet. I loved it all through my service. Was a heavy bigger but still lighter than the old 303. Popular "beasting" was to hold it by the flash hider one hand at full extension! Ouch! Don't know any Para who actually swapped rifles but a few wanted to bring home a souvenir! Most wound up in Portsmouth sound before the customs came aboard! 😁

When I did my RSO course in 1984 I was timed for twenty rounds at 100 yards on a figure 11 target from the prone position. Got twenty hits in a dinner plate sized group in just under ten seconds with a C1A1 FAL. As I hadn't shot a FAL since 1969 in the British Army (L1A1 SLR) I was really happy to find out it was so similar and that I hadn't lost the skill with this great rifle. I thank the Lor d of Warriors that I didn't have to put up with the peashooters they issue to our guys nowadays

@ Mike: I realize you are kidding around - but in all seriousness, I am mystified as to why more northern European nations didn't adopt the FAL. The Belgians wouldn't license production of the rifle to the Germans during the early years of the Cold War, so they had to find something different in the G3. But the Baltic states all adopted the G3 instead of the FAL, as did Denmark, Norway and Sweden. All adopted the G3 instead. I wonder if the FN had some sort of trouble in winter tests? The G3 is a cheaper weapon to manufacture, and it is legendary for its reliability and toughness. So there is that.

Canada was the first country to adopt the FN FAL (outside of Belgium). We (Canada not me as I wasn't yet born) did the painstaking conversion of the specs from metric to inch and built them in country. I carried one for my first 5 years in the army (83 - 88). A note on the facts in the video. India's FALs were metric and not inch. I know cause I own one. I also have a Brit one in inch pattern.
@therogers4432
@therogers4432 Год назад
@libertarian45 Please could you answer a question for me? Is it true that because of the incredibly small-but-consistent difference/error in the conversion calculations/charts from metric to Imperial, that inch-pattern SLRs will accept metric-pattern FAL magazines, but an inch-pattern SLR magazine is slightly too large to fit a FAL magazine well? Thanks in anticipation 😁
@lib556
@lib556 Год назад
@@therogers4432 I'm not an expert but I do know thy are not interchangeable both ways. Some parts are interchangeable. I also know the gas plug is not. I have both an inch pattern and a metric one. I suppose I could dig up mags and fiddle around with them. Unfortunately, they aren't handy as our idiot government made FALs prohibited in the mid-90s, then refused transport permits for range visits as of the mid-2000s. Anyway, before I can sort out and find the right mags, someone else here will likely know the answer. 😁

Brilliant weapon. I was in the SADF 1981/2 and we had the South African R1 & other versions in the army. Wooden stocks, Rubber stocks, Folding Stocks, some with the handles, some without the handle. We would practice at 100, 200 & 300 meters from the target. The snipers would be able to go easily up to the 1000 meters and still hit the targets with ease.

Range fees? Ammo? I try to shoot on the cheap and the least expensive ammo is .22lr and 7.62x54r. I also try to push myself and whatever I'm shooting. A scoped 10/22 can shoot 1" groups at 100yards if using the right ammo (blazer in my case) so instead of shooting for volume, you're rewiring your brain for the right conditions for the sear break. The mosin nagant took more work as I have to handload ammo to achieve the best accuracy especially when I had it shortened. There are ways to remain on the range, it's about what goals you have when you get there. Granted I'm not on the range every week, but pushing your skills and your weapon system is going to bring the most out of your investments.
