Focke Wulf Fw-190 ‘Butcher Bird’ Warbirds Over Scone

What does a commercial pilot do in his free time........of course he owns and flies a WWII German warbird........ with the only flyable Focke Wulf Fw-190 in Australia (titled Würger & nicknamed 'Butcher Bird' ).
For Chris Mayr it was an early dream to find and fly this aircraft being most likely encouraged by his German father and his grandfather's connection with the Luftwaffe.
This Fw 190-A8 version was produced in February 1944, then heavily damaged due to bombing in a German factory and then sent to Loisianna USA for restoration
After purchasing the Fw-190 in 2014 the aircraft arrived in Albury, NSW. Australia in July 2015 and had its first flight in the same year.

I have a special love for this particular 190. I’m an aircraft mechanic, and I was working at the Baton Rouge airport during the time period in which she was initially restored. As a matter of fact, I was manning one of the fire extinguishers during the green run, when she first roared back to life! It was a moment I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

My favourite WWII Fighter is the Heinkel Salamander, made of wood, 860 kph an occured the last week of the war..

Finally, some one with a great camera that shows actual movement of the prop, plus great sound that's Not remanufactured. Please film this again without airshow noise background but a thanks for posting a great aircraft. This guy is living the dream.

Thanks Craig for your positive comments. I agree with you about airshow speakers which mostly spoils footage. Whilst i always try to find an area away from speakers it is far from easy unless a long way away. What you have just watched included footage of the practice display which thankfully had no speakers on. Cheers CP

Mayr’s aircraft was assembled in the US of Flugwerk repair parts and comprises about 90 per cent new construction and the rest original components. There are a few original parts, such as the tailwheel unit, the engine is not one of them. There are few original wartime BMW 801D‑2 14-cylinder radial engines. This 190 is powered by a Russian Ash-82T, licence-built in China. This is a 14-cylinder twin-row radial.

What a beautiful plane! To me it looks elegant when airborne, but even more elegant when taxiing on the ground, like at 0:23.

This one have the annular oil radiator? I didn't see the over-wing radiators that the other Flug Werk 190's have.

+@magoid Flugwerk originally designed the oil cooling system to mount in the upper gun bay with controllable airflow, although there were problems. It looks like this Flugwerk has kept that original installation.
