Yep. The standard RS MK2 struggled to put the power down on anything but a dry, warm, straight and flat piece of tarmac. Let alone with double the power. Only so much mapping can do to alleviate it. Many RS owners will argue it but they are kidding themselves (coming from a former mk2 owner). Such a shame a great engine and chassis but it always needed AWD.
@@P1Fanatic It's funny how the 227bhp Escort RS Cosworth was AWD from factory....then the AWD got ditched for the MK1 Focus RS.... You'd think they would have at least offered AWD as a option on the MK2 ST and RS, especially given how the Volvo AWD parts bolt straight in and those parts were sat there on the shelf, being fitted to Volvo S40 T5's and V50 T5s with same chassis and engine.
@@TekkenBones thats because it was based on an 80s RWD Sierra chassis and not the FWD Escort chassi of the day. It was only ever an Escort by badge only. Come Focus time an entirely new FWD platform was used. AWD was not a consideration at launch and was only adopted because the Germans were having it away in the hot hatch stakes
That was an epic video and you couldn’t have asked for more in world comparisons. Rolling, lead advantage ,full boost and alternating drive settings. Really enjoyable and answered all the ‘what if ‘ questions before they had a chance to be asked.
I’ve got a say that 4 wheel drive ST is a monster but well done to both Sam and Reese for a good race and well done to Jamie for another epic Sunday morning showdown 💯🔥🔥🙌🏼
That St is a beast 😎. The fact that Sam did all the work himself is amazing too. If I had to choose it would be the ST. Love to see a 4wd version of this RS too.
The ST is an absolute weapon! Still my favourite car of all time on the channel! I had a standard ST 6 years ago, was a fantastic car and the 5 pot engine just sounds insane
By far one of my favourite OG Battles! Had a 530hp RS before my GTR and they are no joke, but they cry out for AWD. Reese's RS would be an animal if he went that route 😈
@@hi2lenduffy837 yeah i know the new rs is 2.3 litre 4 cylinder an the old one is a 2.5litre 5 cylinder, just would be interesting to see 0 to 60mph considering new rs is lighter
Love the look of both but that ST proves how to manage your power, and the effects when its tuned perfectly, amazing, now need to see an AWD fiesta st take on someone like a Caterham, I'd love to see the ST up against that madness of the Ultima GTR!!😁
This has to be one of my favourite OG battles, I’m a Ford fan but even for any non Ford fan I think you have to appreciate the insane build that the ST is with the AWD swap! Pure savage and I’d choose that car in that current form over many surprising cars 🔥🤯
Great video. Personally I think 600bhp through the front wheels is pointless.... especially for a fast road car. It maybe the old git in me saying that but I just think there's no point having the power If you can't effectively use it. Either way....Jamie's vids are always good fun.
@@ahemgee9542 I am in the UK too. Our roads are not great and the rain means having a powerful fwd car isn't always fun. I drove a mates Peugeot 106 GTi the other day with 120ish bhp and sure its not mega quick but I could use all the power and it was massive fun. Alot more fun than my 300bhp megane.
Reece, Sam - monster shout out to the pair of you boys. Absolute mad builds! In fwd that was SO tight. You should be exceptionally proud of those cars! Enjoyed this head to head so much. The ST in AWD mode is other world quick, I wouldn't want to put anything against that thing off the lights! The fact it's 1/100 sec off an R34 GTR with 100hp+ advantage over it in a 1/4 mile just goes to show what a package that car is.
The ST is amazing. Just the right amount of power to not be a waste in FWD mode (or a much better TC system which doesnt make it seem wasted) and a real beast in AWD. the RS would infuriate me with the constant sound of the power being cut in everything up to 4th gear (and therefore north of 100MPH). I wonder if he's kicking himself watching this back and thinking he should go get his ECU/TC redone by Sam, and maybe throw some volvo AWD parts in there too.
Not gunna lie every time I see the front wheel drive leaderboard it gets me gassed to see a mini still at the top, mine would take three days to do the 1/4 but still classicminigang👊🏻🔥content strong as usual!👊🏻💙
Mk2 ST was my first turbo car and I fell in love with boost and the 5 pot rumble. Got a RS3 now but will always have a soft spot for the ford 5 banger.
2 proper cars, this is why I got an ST. Drink fuel but a good car really when modded correctly. Owned mine for 5 years running Dream science mod X with all required mods & an RS clutch n flywheel, goes well. 310bhp. Enough for me ✌🏼
Just set up Mod XRS after the St being my daily car for the last 6-7 years... Bosch RS injectors, stage 3 cooler, Dreamscience cold air intake, 600nm single mass clutch, forged wastegate actuator, GFB diverter valve and 3 inch turbo back X force exhaust... very quiet system apart from the air intake, though pumping around 330hp haha
You can tell that RS of Reece’s is built for more power when opened up and up in the revs it seems to flow more air and pull back on the ST. The set up on the ST at that horsepower though is super efficient kudos to Sam.
Great performance from the ST in both AWD and fwd, but just shows how big HP fwd builds are ultimately pointless. Can't launch and can't corner... pretty useless.
Awesome 2 very well built cars and a credit to who built them You can hear reece's sycecs working overtime to try and get the power down and even with the headstart it couldn't manage it. Shows you can have as much power as you like but without traction it means nothing
@@Johanzzon89 nah, AWD just makes that much of a difference. 500HP through front wheels is a no go. 2x the wheels putting power down = 2x the traction, instead of 250 per driven wheel its 125hp. Way more manageable.
Sam built one of my dream cars, an awd ST what an awesome lad, I always knew that an awd ST would dominate even considered one on my mk2, but sadly the conversion is not very common and there’s not much info about it, will start bombing Sam on the DM’s lol this is my first time ever seeing one in action! Massive shoutout to Jamie for making two features of this amazing machine, one with the golf R which in my book only took the roll races because he jumped lol, and now proving that an expensive RS build is pretty much useless in the real world and only worthy of flaunting HP numbers, I would take the awd ST any day and enjoy every second of it, this only makes me want another mk2 and try this but I moved to the N54 bimmer world now
What can I say both cars are epic the speed of them is insane. But the st in 4x4 mode was crazy. Never seen anything like that, reminds me of a rally car. Jamie.. ur the man. Best video.
