The ancient tea horse road brought puerh tea from Yunnan to the rest of the Asian world. Tea and other goods were actively traded on these routes for more than a thousand years.
Lamu's grandfather traded tea on the tea horse road during his youth. He moved tea and goods from Lijiang to Shangri-La and back. We take you along the routes he used in the 1930's and give you a small peek into the life of a tea trader.
We finish the video with an interview with Lamu's grandfather who is 90 years old now. He discusses his experiences 75 years ago.

Great to see again these very interesting places after having travelled throughout there, I'd recommend them as the best places to go in China. Interesting to hear that the Songzanlin Monastery also acted as a tea warehouse back in the days. It sounds a long way to go from Yunnan to Chengdu via Shangrila and the mountains, and nowadays that could make it a cool adventurous backpackers route - but with no easy flight routes that would have just been the only feasible way then! Really cool to hear the granpa's stories with his first hand experience on the Tea Horse Road. I heard stories about how tough it was, especially in the part going into Tibet.

As I understand it the route to Chengdu was different and wouldn't have gone to Sumtseling. I think they would have gone east from Lijiang or perhaps the tea intended for Chengdu went through Kunming; or both.

Hi there Glen, nice video I really enjoy your content. I realized that your lotus leaf tea strainer sold out, is that one that you are going to restock at any time?
