...EJ...your channel is a shining gem in the orchid channel collective.......great information....fantastic editing ..the music alone would bring me back again......and your collection is one of the best......such healthy and large plants.....To me.....the big specimens are a real test of a growers ability..... It shows,.... not only good feeding, and good environment.....but shows someone who keeps that level of growing up all the time...consistant......steady.. and long enough to grow some large orchids.....such commitment.......big fan of your channel.

What a wonderful compliment! Thank so much. I love growing specimens plants, when they bloom they give such beautiful shows. But even when not in bloom they are still beautiful to look at. I never was good in dividing my plants, like repotting I never like doing it because the plants hate in my experience. So I try to avoid both as much as possible, that’s why I love inorganic media so much. You never have to clean, healthy alive roots anymore. So no potential for damage them! I love it!

Thank you, and yes soon we need to make that video! A look at all my Phals in bloom :D They are a bit later with blooming, I think that is because of “the move”. They had not enough light for about 9 days, so that did give them a little setback….

Thank you for your very informative and detailed video sharing all your tips and success with growing orchids. My only question question is when you give the orchid its very first watering...do you watch and observe the water meter level or is it that it does not matter..the first watering is only to acclimatize the new Orchid.? Thanks in advance for your reply.
@TheOrchidSaGa
@TheOrchidSaGa 4 месяца назад
It first watering is for me the first time that the orchid does get a reservoir. So then I do use only RO and seaweed. That’s step 6. Or do you mean step 5? Then I do only flush, so no water in the reservoir yet!

Hi - thanks so much for your channel and advice. I've moved all of my orchids (about 100) to pumice over the past year (self-watering) after watching your videos and it's made a very positive difference. I finally found a place to buy the larger size in Switzerland - was a bit difficult to find a year ago. You seem to have a very organized way of storing your pumice which seems to make repotting more efficient. One video that might be good for those of us who have switched over is to show how you clean your pumice before using. I know it might seem obvious but I am concerned about clogging up my drain yet wish to be sure I remove the sediment. When you clean them do you use RO water? Do you sterilize your pumice by boiling? If you have a few minutes I would really appreciate some guidance!

How wonderful! I am so happy this setup works for you as well! That really makes me smile! :D I do have a video on how I prepare my new and reused pumice. I do use RO water all ways! Hello, I have two questions: 1) I heard you say that you do not flush, you only do what you did at the sink at the beginning. Is this a wonderful non flush method? 2) When you are acclimating the orchid initially, I know how to water in setups like moss and bark. But, it looks like you gently and slowly water it, and then didn't pour out any excess water, is that correct? As in, there is a little excess water at the bottom?
@TheOrchidSaGa
@TheOrchidSaGa 4 месяца назад
Thank you so much for your interest in my growing setup! I do not flush indeed, but this comes with `a price`, you need to adjust the pH in the reservoir from time to time and keep an eye on the ppm readings. I do not go over 200ppm in the reservoir! I also did make a video about the setup that hopefully will help you, here is the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yXlsBtqlyzA.html

Good info EJ. Just one question. If a watermeter is optional , how much water needs to be inside the pot?
@TheOrchidSaGa
@TheOrchidSaGa 4 месяца назад
Good question! It depends, if you have a small pot (for me that would be the 10 cm pots or smaller) You only need about 1 cm (about have an inch) of water. But every pot bigger than that, I have around 2 cm of water (that’s a little less than an inch). For orchids that drink that reservoir empty to soon, so after a few days, I just give them a bit more. But you always want to have enough room for air in the pots.

Excellent tips Ej. I would love to try semi hydro but I think my grow room would be too cold in winter. It stays around 15 c in winter and probably the same during the day if its overcast and raining, which is a lot in ireland!. When I come home in the evening it rises to about 20 c with heat. Sunny days room is much warmer. What would you advise? 😊
@TheOrchidSaGa
@TheOrchidSaGa 4 месяца назад
No I wouldn’t start growing them in SH, it is to cold sadly. I have it around 18 C at night but in winter the water in the pots cools down to around 15 - 16 degrees. The plants handle it, but not very well. So if the room temperature does go down even more, the temperatures in the pots will go down even further and that will probably kill a lot of roots on most of the plants.

Hi EJ I’ve just transitioned a Phal Shilleriana to pumice, but it’s the small (1-7mm) as that’s what I had. I don’t have the large. Just wondering if you have experience or knowledge on putting a Phal in the smaller pumice. Thinking maybe I might have done it wrong… thanks for the vid. Very informative
@TheOrchidSaGa
@TheOrchidSaGa 4 месяца назад
I think it can go well as long as the pot is not too big (max 12 cm / 5 inch). Otherwise, you will probably get issues with not getting enough air in the middle of the pot for these orchids with thicker roots.
@RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne
@RareRootsOfJoyMelbourne 4 месяца назад
@@TheOrchidSaGa yeah well on the back of your video, I’ve ordered a couple of large bags of 7-20mm pumice. I think I’ve decided not to take the chance as she was in pretty chunky bark before the change so the amount of air that her roots are exposed to now is reduced significantly. I suspect that will be a smart move, moving her across to the larger pumice. But thanks a lot for the reply and for helping set me on the right path 💚
