There is a huge contradiction preaching mental freedom around food and then eating a fruit-based diet. The pipeline from ED to fruitarian/raw vegan seems to be very high.

I went from severe calorie restriction to intermittent fasting, believing that I was finally “healing” my relationship with food. I did OMAD for a while and even Alternate Day Fasting a bit. Instead of healing, I developed a stubborn little binge habit. It got to the point where I couldn’t even go 2 days without a binge. Finally, I got rid of ALL the IF people from my life, deleted My Fitness Pal and just took the plunge to heal myself. I’ve been making very small but fantastic improvements with my relationship with food and best of all, it’s now been almost 3 weeks since my last binge! This is huge for me! I have only just begun and have a long road ahead but I NEVER wish a life of restriction for me anymore.

ED recovery influencers who are clearly not recovered, food freedom coaches who are drastically underweight, but claim to eat everything under the sun. It’s harmful. At least let ppl know that they are most likely going to recover into a larger body, which is fine! It makes people feel bad to see these influencers preaching food freedom, eating everything, and still being drastically underweight.

When someone asks you, how are you so slim if you are eating this? First, one meal can not make you obese, that is magic thinking. Second: Tell them the truth. This is one meal, I'm not eating this everyday every meal. I am sharing now with you this meal and enjoying it but it is not my everyday. I like exercising too so that is a factor to be mindful about. Some cases might be about their metabolism and eat whatever without gaining any weight. These types are the ones who struggle with gaining weight and muscle most of the time. But in my case "my secret" is NOT a secret. It is what it is. Balance. One meal can not make you skinny or obese. And food is for what it is: fuel (that is my mindset and I could be TOTALLY wrong but I'm not going to tell anyone a lie).

Thank you! I’ve felt like there is a super sneaky anorexia/bulimia to orthorexia “pipeline”, masquerading as finding “food freedom”, that’s been ignored for a long time, and it’s relieving to see it finally recognized. I used to constantly be on a path to find the “perfect well-balanced” diet and I truly believed that one day I would finally figure it out if I kept trying hard enough. I think we should learn to prioritize freedom from thinking about food excessively as much as ”food freedom”. I try to remind myself that I’m not going to receive an award on my deathbed for following a particular diet or set of rules, and I won’t care then anyways.

Or when they call diet as a lifestyle and say that your body is in the process of withdrawal because that stuff is crack, I am so repulsed. And then there is that one dude in a grocery store telling me that there is 33% added sugar in my Oatmilk and how I should eat "real" food... It shouldn't take this much energy from humans to JUST drink a damn oatmilk latte with actual caffeine sugar. Nonono. Instead, I need to go home and forge some dandelion root, milk a cow and use some forest wood that is ethically procured to rub stones and create some fire to brew some health potion that would solve all my life's problems.

Regardless of what the creator looks like, no one should be claiming to sell you a program to heal an ED without qualifications - period! Ideally you'd be able to get one-on-one, personalized guidance from a qualified professional or team that you meet with individually, but I know that's definitely not always possible. While I think people are always going to share their personal experiences online and there may be people who choose to take that as advice, I wish there was a way to stop people from selling programs when they have no knowledge on the psychology and treatment of EDs beyond their own experience.
@RamenzillaX
@RamenzillaX 7 месяцев назад
The real problem is the driving force behind a lot of disordered eating is the desire to fit the societal ideal of beauty (to receive better treatment, get better opportunities, be associated with good qualities, etc) - and as the decades have gone that has increasingly focused on the body, which often requires either being genetically "gifted", extreme dedication/years of training, and/or often the privilege and resources to make it a major priority. Most influencers don't blow up purely for their talent, they blow up for their looks and that is why they rise to the top of the algorithms.

I had started a “wellness” journey, at work one day I passed out. Went to the doctor and he decided I was dehydrated (despite me arguing I was more hydrated than usual) he then decided to mention that I should try intermittent fasting to lose weight (I’m 185lb) as it had worked for some of his patients. I was uncomfortable so wrapped up the appointment and as I was about to walk out the door he decided to take my blood sugar. I was .1 from being in an ambulance. I had to be fed numerous jellybeans before the angel of a nurse told the doctor she didn’t give a damn about his opinion, she was going to give me carbs. At which point I was finally healthy enough to go home 3 hours later Let’s say I listened to that doctor and went home and didn’t eat? He could have killed me with his advice

I so often bump into pages with unrealistic bodies (sometimes with pictures full on edited) and promises of extreme thinness BUT all promoting intuitive eating. I would like them to understand how hard ED recovery is. Personally, I approached intuitive eating with the secret wish that it will make me lose weight, and when it didn't happen my ED came back strong. I'm already struggling a lot to make sense of food freedom as NOT a diet and I know a lot of people are experiencing the same. We really DO NOT need these catfishing accounts. From someone who has recently lost over 100lbs and kept it off for the past two years (but has also gained and lost 70 lbs three more times in the last 25 years) it is basically impossible not to have a f**d up relationship with food and exercise. Anytime I try "intuitive eating" my "intuition tells me eat all the junk food I can get my hands on and not do any exercise. This obviously doesn't work. For me, food is numbers. Count every calorie I eat and every calorie I burn. If I'm not doing that, the weight just keeps creeping up. I hate it, it is tedious and annoying, but for someone like me who has never been naturally thin, it's the only thing that works.

Have to say I got burned by fasting last year, after years of ED recovery and being in a good place I thought I could get away with fasting without it triggering me.. I think I was genuinely captured by the benefits of increased energy, clearer skin and others, instead of weight loss but inevitably at some point something changed, and I ended up in a uncomfortable binge, restrict and shame cycle again. Luckily having gone through the process of recovery a few times before now it hasn't taken long to get to a healthy place, viewing food as nourishment physically and mentally again. @@osazecole9325 First of all, I never said that I didn't think bodybuilding has a super high rate of ED. It does. For ME, personally, bodybuilding is HOW I healed from my ED, how I actually reversed my Osteoporosis (via DEXA), and how I learned to be OK with the fluctuations of a body as it moves through massing and cutting phases. I'm 40 lbs heavier than I was but still super small; I only restrict food when I am in contest prep. That's a temporary state, and then you reverse diet your way back up to maintenance or above. My relationship with food is strong now because food isn't restricted, I have so much muscle that the muscle demands calories for everything it needs to do. For me fasting actually has almost totally fixed my relationship with food. I have been a binge eater off and on for years, when I started doing extended fasts (5+ days) it broke my boy away from sugars, fast food, and other foods that weren't healthy or contributing to the lifestyle I wanted. Also, when you do extended fasts, you become so hungry that everything sounds good, and for me, I could feel my body craving nutrition. What I typically want during those fasts are things like salads, chicken, smoothies, and grilled veggies. For me, fasting takes away the temptation of unhealthy foods. As I come off fasting, I've made the change in my diet to not be restrictive with foods but to have a wide range of foods that I like in my home, but I prioritize the foods that my body wants and needs. I feel less of an urge to binge like this and have dropped the scarcity mindset with food and have learned to love nourishment over pleasure in my diet. This approach is not for everyone, but it works wonders for me.

I genuinely think that learning to be "comfortable with discomfort" can be a really helpful practice in overcoming food addiction. I know I was using food as a coping mechanism for a while after a bad break up. Now I'm learning better to interpret when I'm hungry versus when I'm just anxious and turning to food to numb those feelings. Being okay with feeling the discomfort of the anxiety and working through it has been really important to me. Selling diets and getting paid to guide people is actually regulated in the health industry. Maybe Abbey can address this further, but it’s just so dangerous to be out here selling this stuff to people when you have no training or accountability mechanisms in place.

i am sorry but there is NOTHING wrong with limiting processed foods to a minimum! there is so much research out there on how processed food is harming our health, f.e. the gut microbiome (and also the environment). Saying that avoiding them is an ED is insane ! Real food freedom is if you are not craving sugary, fatty processed foods all the time. Food freedom is, if you can have a cake or pizza once a week without feeling bad but also without feeling like you have to eat that crap every single day Cravings are not the same as out bodies "needs". An alcoholic will also crave alcohol. Food addiction is real. And processed foods are in fact designed to make people addicted. There is a difference between calorie and foodrestriction because you are afraid of gaining weight etc. but that does not mean that people who care about what they put into their body have an ED. if scientists like Huberman or any of their podcasts guests say "avoid processed food" people will respect that, if a female influencer says "I eat 80 % healthy and limit processed food to 20%" people say "omg that girl has an ED." seriously xD get a grip people !

its extremely pervasive and triggering. I am a thin woman in my late twenties, but when I see even thinner influencers spouting wellness tricks to maintain a "healthy physique" that is clearly very low body fat and unachievable by most, it makes me feel inadequate. I am a runner, and building muscle and eating lots of food and often "junk/dirty" food is essential to meeting my energy output, and I wish more influencers would focus on feeling strong and energetic via diet, and true ~balance~ rather than looking extremely thin. being lean is great, but leanness and true health is going to look different on each body. Altho I prefer the way I look when I weigh less, I FEEL and perform better when I'm about 10 pounds heavier. And thats okay! I would wager that most of these women have irregular periods, low energy/sex drive, and gaslight themselves into feeling good because they are obsessed with the way they look. I've been there! And I'd rather be slightly heavier and feel 250% better and be able to focus on things other than my next meal because my hormones, brain and muscles are actually nourished with an unrestricted diet and balance between training and true rest. I wish these ladies could see how beautiful their bodies are and feel confident without body checking or hyperfixating on the thinness of their thighs or tone in their abs 💙

Informative video. I dont have an ED. I am very much into learning about proper nutrition to treat a metabolic syndrome. I find most videos mention weight loss to attract views. Moderation and not feeling deprived or discipline and control is needed to get to a point of food freedom. I worry for those with ED watching these influencers.Weight loss and being in your ideal weight happens when you decide to eat whole, least to no processed, no added sugar food.

I so appreciate you talking about this. Diet culture to the extreme is so damaging on the mind and body. I just started an intensive IOP program. My life revolves around exercise & calorie counting, with a very limited amount of foods I can eat. After 13 years of being fully recovered, it was easy to dismiss the signs of relapse with diet culture being so heavily promoted as healthy. I’m now struggling with liver, cardiac, and kidney issues. My hair has gotten very thin, and I developed iron deficiency anemia so severe that I need transfusions. Also, despite being very active, I’ve begun developing pressure ulcers. With makeup and hair extensions, these negative consequences are easy enough to hide, which is more evidence that influencers don’t talk about the negative effects of their extreme diets.

NUANCE. When someone says intuitive eating they mean they are eating mostly what they like and crave … and it tends to align with their goals may it be losing weight or fat. They’re saying before they use to have cravings and now how they eat feels natural and not restrictive to them…. Nuance . It really is the ideal way of losing weight if possible for your whole is trying to. Including bigger people, there is no one way to lose it it is mainly calorie deficit but by eating “intuitively lower calorie foods ex fruits veg etc etc “ they’re literally taking out the mental stress and obsession over food which is why people often gain weight in the first place or the opposite have ed. If they see food as addictive on a holy grail they do……. So these women did “intuitive eating aka eating less calorie foods etc fasting sometimes because they weren’t hungry …. And got their DREAM BODY . Do you have a problem with that ?😊

From the dawn of history, people always wanted to look good and wanted to be desired by their partner. Nothing's wrong in wanting to have a beautiful fit body. If done right and not harming your health but actually improving it, why is this instagram wellness so bad. I don't understand. Fasting has been linked to anti ageing, and we all want to look and feel younger.

I appreciate your shorts where you show a dietician eating at fast food restaurants and how to make simple foods into HCC's. Never enough on this topic I feel like these types of meritocracy selling influencers so called coaches (fake) basically take one or two general common sense factual rule, like the 80/20 that everyone knows, and extrapolates several inferences from it that do not follow. You can be extremely healthy eating what Abbey calls a "restrictive" or "orthorexic" diet. You could also call it self care by eating only the very best foods you can obtain. Listen to Dr Esselstyn, Dr Micheal Greger, Dr Doug Lyle, Dr McDougall etc. By Abbey's standards the way they recommend eating is at the very least "restrictive". Their results on human health are spectacular though. She'd probably diagnose me as orthorexic if she saw my diet following their recommendations. I have almost a decade of glowing good health and a slim functional body so call me whatever you want I guess.🤷🏼‍♀️. These content creators give me value with their great meal ideas. I like this comment a lot and it really resonates with me. I am not a young woman as these influencers and Abbey are, but when I was, I could eat anything and not gain weight. I was active, but I knew I was lucky because I never felt the need to diet or restrict. I definitely felt it was all about moderation and eating balanced, healthy meals most of the time, and it seemed to be working for me. Fast forward to middle age, and it turns out that everyone in my family, including myself, has either cholesterol problems or diabetes or high blood pressure or a combo of all three. Erring on the side of casual and leaning in to the mantra that there are “no bad foods” because of the possibility triggering an Eating Disorder or Orthorexia seems to bring the risk of other health problems later in life (for some….others seem to be lucky enough to indulge in delicious Personal Pan pizzas with impunity!)

Intuitive eating is not a diet, period. If you are restricting, including fasting, and essentially ignoring your body’s natural hunger and fullness cues… IT’S NOT INTUITIVE EATING. And because intuitive eating has honestly changed my life in so many positive ways, it irks me to see the term being weaponized to manipulate people into a diet in disguise in the name of vanity. Intuitive eating is an incredible tool for healing and I hope that this sick trend can end so that people can find their way back to true wellness utilizing its framework.

@GetOfflineGetGood 7 месяцев назад
Let go of losing weight. Do behaviors that are health-promoting regardless of your size such as eating a varied diet that leaves you feeling satisfied, drinking plenty of water, making time for regular physical movement, and getting enough sleep. If you're doing all those things and you're getting regular checkups with your doctor and you're still in a larger body, then being in a larger body is not unhealthy for you. Intentional weight loss A. Does not work in the longer term for 90%+ of people, B. Does not inherently make you healthier if the behaviors are not health promoting (such as calorie restriction or food obsession) and C. Can make your health worse overall in the long term. Losing weight is not everything.

As a Bodybuilder, body checks to me are actually a good reference to see if the coach has done good work with clients so far. It's also normal to do them regularly for me. But it's a different perspective, it's not really emotional, I just look at what I've built up and what needs more work. And of course I need discipline and a clean diet because I have a goal to achieve. Of course it's nice to just eat whatever and however much you want, but it's also nice to stay up partying all night or drive a car with high speed. You can do that sometimes, but you have to be aware of the consequences, and being disciplined with food is not a disorder in my opinion, UNLESS it becomes extreme like malnutrition or even a prep diet in my case. And of course selling weird one-sided diets is counterproductive too. But if a Bodybuilding coach writes a meal plan, usually they pay much attention to nutrients and required calories so the athletes can perform well. Maybe my view is not suitable for general folks so please don't hate on me🙏🏻

Aim for 90-100, would that be more doable? I'm not trying to lose weight but I do track my protein intake and I average 80-100g on most days, through vegetarian high-protein foods like skyr, in addition to lots of legumes, nutritional yeast and eggs. That gets me to that range fairly easily on about 1800-1900 kcal a day. Maybe adding in a protein powder you like could also boost your numbers?
