I'm Native American so my favorite childhood food is Navajo fry bread, or Navajo tacos. I would always show it off at school because I thought it was the single best food ever. We always have it at family reunions, so everytime I have it I'm either remembering sweet memories or making new ones!

one of my favorite foods when i was a kid is this thing called bachka. i honestly have no idea how its actually pronounced, but its like a savoury and crispy pancake made of fermented dal (lentils) and rice turned in to batter and has whole green chickpeas inside. since the chickpeas are hard to find in canada, my mom always made them with green peas and now i prefer them like that haha. my mom would make it as like a special weekend breakfast and i would eat it with ketchup or achaar. as a kid i never really like the kind of fermented flavors in other indian foods like dosa or idli (it came to me later on haha) but i always loved bachka.

Absolutely. I make mac & cheese at least once a week. It feeds my inner child and it's also my #1 safe food... but only Kraft. Everything else is gross to me, especially if they add like 5 different types of cheese. But I'll add grilled cheese & tomato soup as well as Spaghettios to the list. At first I was embarrassed to have such simple foods where everyone else in these comments is talking about very ethnic foods, only half of which I know how to pronounce. But this "trashy" food is my childhood. And thank you for sharing it with me

The food that feeds my inner child is definitely Coditos con tuna, it's basically a pasta salad with tuna and sometimes vegetables. It's a food that's really common for families in Panama to make because of how easy and affordable it is, it's a food that I love and I could eat non-stop. Ever since I moved here to the US I found out how much I miss the food, since most ingredients for Panamanian dishes are quite rare or simply cannot be found here, it can be really hard to eat foods that remind me of my home but with Coditos con tuna however the ingredients are not something out of the ordinary, I can find them literally everywhere and it will instantly remind me of my childhood and my home. It's really good lol.

My mom's chicken soup. Growing up I didn't eat a lot of chicken coz it was pricey and my family's financials were bad at that time. But we had it on special days like my birthday and Christmas day. I remember it was 10 years ago, I was in my early 20s and came back home from work feeling cold. I texted my mom I'm not feeling well. When I got home my mom brought in a bowl of chicken soup and it was the best cure to my cold coz its so hearty and made with love and especially it always reminds me of my childhood, like I know I will always always love it no matter how old I am. Thank God now we can enjoy it without having to wait for my birthday or Christmas.

Having Wolga-German parents that grew up in their German communities in Russia, my comfort food I was brought up with is buckwheat soup. It consists of buckwheat grains, potatoes, shredded carrots and herbs simmered with small meatballs. I never liked the meatballs, but they give an amazing flavor to the broth, so I used to put up a chair to reach in the pot with a ladle to fish out the meatballs before I ate it as a kid😂 Nowadays whenever I make the soup I finish everything (about 5l) in two days. I just can't get sick of the soup. But if you make it, make sure there's someone else who'll eat the meatballs lol😆

There is this dish that my grandmother used to cook for me (She's not gone, but she cooks it in a different way now because of her own health) It's called "Kinamatisan" from the word "Kamatis" meaning "Tomato" in tagalog. Since I was a very picky eater in my childhood, whenever she cooks it and there is fish in it, I always just go for the soup, and my dad has to take away the fish bone because I will not eat it😭. There's also this "pasta soup" called "Sopas" it has filipino hotdogs and condensed milk in the soup with elbow pasta. It was really good because my dad always cooks it for me whenever it's getting a little chilly or when I'm sick. A funny moment also happened with Sopas as a witness. Sinec the Condensed milk was optional in sopas, My mom cooked it without the Condensed milk and my picky eater self didnt recognize it because it didnt have the same color on it😭 (Mom was traumatized because of me on that one LOL) she still cooks it but not without the Condensed milk

So, mine would be мусака (moussaka). My mom made it once every month or two and I loved it (still do). To my knowledge, Greek мусака is usually made with eggplant; meanwhile Bulgarian мусака isn't. It usually just has potatoes, ground beef, and some egg-yogurt mix thing that's poured on top. You eat it with yogurt and it's really delicious and takes me back to my childhood.

This may sound like a weird question but hear me out hahah! I looove rice but I have OCD and I have always been super concerned about food hygiene (which im fully aware i have learned only from western sources, which i believe may fearmonger around rice more than is necessary). Of course rice is a food that you have to be more careful with but my Caribbean family are so much more relaxed than I have ever been with refrigerating, reusing, reheating rice etc and it's not like they're regularly getting unwell. I'm curious about what other cultures that regularly eat rice teach about food hygeine. So often its reheated, eaten cold, taken for lunch (out of the fridge) etc. Any rice food hygeine tips appreciated!!

My wife, who is Vietnamese plays fast and loose with Food Safety. Defrosting chickens over night on the counter, making a soup in the morning, then leaves it on the stove off heat, fries fish, leaves it on the counter all day etc. I don't eat this stuff that she does this with, but she is fine. Guess some people have more tolerance to microbes. As far as food safety goes for the rest of us, as long as your food is fresh, and your work space clean, it can go for 2 to 4 hours without refrigeration. If your concerned, get a softsided cooler and one of those "gel like" ice packs and keep everything cool.

I'm British, my childhood favourite is corned beef hash. It's savoury and warning and perfect for a cold day. You have to mop up the last bits with bread and butter!

Tanyaki, Diafuku Mochi, Tempura, and having a Ramena Peach or Sakura flavored. It always makes me happy, and comfort. It reminds me of our family doing summer festivities on the beach or the festivals that goes on. 💖💖 I miss them so much right now....

I recently made roti, I couldn't explain the nostalgia I felt eating it. Making it took me the whole damn day but damn it was great. Also seeing my boyfriend fully love and enjoy the dish I grew up with made all that work worth it.

My great grandmother would always make me and my siblings different kinds of pancakes when we visited her, like chocolate chip strawberry etc. and when she would run out of syrup she would get honey straight from the bee hive and make us the best food ever. It made eating sweet food fun for me cause it actually tasted good and not just like sugar.

i’ve never met anyone who puts green pepper in tuna salad like my mom taught me, and this sounds like the same concept! i also love tuna mayo onigiri, but this looks even easier and flavorful throughout. i’ll definitely try it, thanks for sharing!

My inner child food is a simple but God it makes me feel so nostalgic. My dad didn't know how to cook. He can't make the amazing Mexican dishes My mom makes. But he did know a couple. The one that sticks to me the most was the dish he would make when my mom went on a trip. He would get maybe 5 or 6 tortillas. Cut them in chip sized triangles. Get a hot pan with oil. Fry them, until some were crunchy and some still soft. He would add beans, let that Fry a bit. Then add 4 eggs and scramble it all together. And we'd eat that right out of the pan hot, while it was on a cutting board. It just brings me so much comfort.

I’m from northern Italy, specifically Lombardy, and to me the best childhood food is a “panino con la cotoletta”. It’s basically a sandwich with breaded and fried pork or chicken in the middle. My grandma used to make this for my brother and I when we went on school trips❤️

It’s that one smooshed burger that can be bought in any supermarket in the Philippines with either iced tea or warm milo in a plastic cup. My grandma always buys burgers and iced tea for my brother and I everytime she goes to the supermarket ever since I could remember. Even now that my grandma isn’t able to move as around as much as she used to, she never forgets to buy us that smooshed burger and a small bottle of iced tea everytime she goes to the supermarket.
