Foolproof Way to Open Stitched Bags

Opening a product bag that has a string stitch across the top can be a frustrating experience - until you know the secret!
This type of bag closure is used for many products, including flour, rice, citrus, and agricultural products like livestock and chicken feeds and grains. While it’s a secure packaging approach, it sure can be confusing on where to begin!
Don’t succumb to the temptation to slice the top of the bag off with your utility knife, or start hacking away at the string tape with a pair of scissors. And, whatever you do, don’t just start pulling hard on one end of the sewn tape. You’ll just make a mess if you do.
In this episode, learn the simple trick to orienting the package or bag correctly, and which end of the tape and strings to start separating. We even throw in a few memory cues to help you always get it right.

I shop at Costco and they use the other type of stitching that has the two threads. Those you must attack from the loop side. This method doesn’t work with the two string stitch! At least you mentioned what type of stitch it was so I could go find the answer I needed. If I ever get the single thread stitch it will be a cinch thanks to you!

I am 74 and knew there must to a right way of doing this. As a kid I opened grain bags for chickens and cows by pulling a string but it was always luck if it ever worked for me. Today I tried opening a bird seed bag. It had single stitch on the front and double stitch on the back, but no extra pc of tape or paper. Just one pc of paper folded and stitched. I played with the strings front and back and finally I got hold of one string on the back that I pulled and then it opened as I remember as a kid. Can't wait to see if I can open a bag the next time I try.

Ok, I'm going to go try this on what is left of the seed bag I finally gave up on and slashed the heck out of it opening. I have been fighting this for over 60 yrs! The new bags with the strip and string and "opening" instructions...lifesaver, no problem, but there are still bags out there without that and I always seem to get them. My 50# nyjer seed bag has two lines of stitching straight onto the bag so I have double the trouble. After I retrieve the top of that bag I cut off, I'll try this and get back with you.....here's hoping I've finally found the solution thanks to your video!

My bag of birdseed doesn't have a narrow tape to pull and the ends of the string were knotted already. Is there a technique for that?
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 4 года назад
C Campbell, it's hard to tell without it being right in front of me. But, I do suspect that this is a similar approach - a chain stitch of some kind, but without a backer tape. If there is a double stitch on one side, and a single on the other, then it can be figured out. Assuming this is the case, orient the bag so that the double stitch is towards you and the single is on the back. Clip off the knots on the right side and see if you get it unravel. You may have to pick out the strings a bit. Once it loosens up, you should be able to "unzip" the bag, going right to left. Let me know if this helps! Best, DFJ

For some reason this didn't work on a Swagat Sona Massoori 20 lb Rice bag. Not sure if it's operator error or not.
@edr3667
@edr3667 3 года назад
Didn't work on my rice bag from Thailand, either. The string zips from left to right, unlike in Dirt Farmer Jay's video. My theory: the ISO standard may be followed more consistently by companies in big Western regions like EU and US, whereas smaller businesses in other regions may use sewing machines that were manufactured without Western standards in mind. The good thing is, if you first try to open a non-Western, nonstandard bag by pulling the string from right to left, you then can simply try the left end to go left to right, instead of continuing to struggle with each stitch of the right end.

Apparently Pennington Bird Seed ties the “pull end” with more knots. After unsuccessfully untying the extra knots, I got scissors and cut off all the extra tape and string from the pull end of the bag luckily pulled the correct string. If I have to have a cutting tool anyway, I may as well just cut the bag to begin with.

What about the bags that don’t open like these easy ones? Some bags, I think won’t pull like this from either end or on either side. Then what?
@DirtFarmerJay
@DirtFarmerJay 4 года назад
Tracy, not sure what is happening there. If it is the simple single-string stitch shown in this video, an ISO 101 stitch, it HAS to come apart somewhere as that's the only way the stitch can be sewn - it is a chain stitch allowing for it to "unloop" from itself. Here's what I suspect. In those "stubborn" bags, the stitch is tucked back inside itself or knotted up. You would take the same approach: single stitch side of the bag facing you, begin on the right top and work to the left. You would check to see that that the undoing of the stitch is begun on the backside and then go from there. Try that approach and let me know how it turns out. Thanks for watching and taking the time to write! Best, DFJ

@@DirtFarmerJay Thanks! Like some others I've struggled with this simple method that seems to never work, or at least only works sometimes. And this comment gave me what I needed to figure out why. The reason is: not all bags have the same stitch! As you noted, your video describes how to undo an ISO 101 SINGLE THREAD chain stitch. But many bags also use a DOUBLE thread chain stitch, such as this Pennington bird seed bag I have. Googling that I found it is ISO 401. Trying this method with that stitch will only tighten the knot on the opposite side. This is the best video I've found so far on undoing that type of stitching: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nFbFLiULdy0.html

Karla, here's a tip from another viewer, @jdizzle6911, that may help you in your situation when working with partial bags or making it easier to pour in a more controlled fashion. @jdizzle6911 says: "Another trick is to undo it halfway and then put the string through one of the loops to make it stay half sealed and half-open to pour." I hope that helps as well! What are your favorite baked goods to make? Sounds like you and others in your close circle do some serious baking! Best, DirtFarmer Jay AND Maggie

If no overlay tape (tape on top of tape, do the opposite and pull chain side stitching.

What about bags without pull tape? I.e. Pennington bird seed.

C N - great insight. We'll get on it and show you how to address these types of stitched bags. One of your fellow viewer family member gave us a great tip on how to address this and we'll put out another episode using his method. Watch for it in the next week or so! Best, DFJ

My rice bags don't look like that. They don't have a separate strip. You have to pull the right thread. When you get it open there is a front thread and a back thread. If you pull the right thread it comes open. I need to know which thread . There is no paper strip to pull, only the thread.

My bag has 2 rows of stitches and no separate piece. When you pull the right one you end up with 2 pieces of string.

Virginia, another person gave an insight on this that might be helpful to you. They say they straddle the bag, with the single string to the right, loosen (pick a loop out) on that single string and pull it back towards you. See if that works for your type of bags. Let us know!

These bags have had me foaming at the mouth since I was a kid. When you're not using them every day the only time you get to practice is when you desperately need to open that 10 lb bag of dog food or rice and you have to wait until you need another to try one more time. Inevitably when I tug on it it makes a knot which makes me just want to yell especially when I then have to use the scissors. Even when I try to cut the string at various points along the stitching figuring if I ruined the first part at least I can interrupt the line and pull from there. It never works. Not once.

The method didn't work on the bottom of the bag! I use my empty feed bags to line my chicken coop. I'm pretty sure I followed your directions exactly...???

Elaine, I sorry it didn't work for you. We use this approach dependably. The underlying principle I've applied to this is that anything that is stitched or woven can be reversed. It takes a bit of trial and error to find where the stitch pattern ended and then reverse it to get the stitch to release. The bag you have may have had a slightly different pattern than the one I demonstrated with, but the principle is the same. Give it another shot from the other end, or the same end, but finding different "loose strings" to pull and see if the stitch unwinds. Let me know. Thanks for writing! Best, DFJ
