Bob, you are the best! So helpful, and I appreciate this video. It’s helped me set my 201K’s tension perfectly.

Thanks for the video. I was never quite sure of the of the relationship between the needle and the check spring when adjusting it.

This tension unit is the same for many Singers. Now that I know the formula for adjusting the thread guide, I can make adjustments accordingly to the 221 I’m working on currently. Why does my newly cleaned machine have a loud rattle? I’m tempted to tear it down again, check for burrs and dry spots and reassemble. I should learn how to do this anyway, so s as to become proficient.

You are 100% correct.........also the quality of the thread...old thread is for file 13...(trash)

I haven't had a problem with my old thread - mostly from the 80's and 90's. It seems to be much better quality than what is readily available today as it's mostly cotton wrapped poly. Definite not linty at all. But I have kept it in darkness with humidity controlled. I also only ever bought cheap thread once back then - 10 rolls for a dollar. Tried to use one spool and tossed the lot. Awful stuff. I do have several cones of a very fine 100% cotton thread from a 70's shirt factory. Again no lint, but also no strength. I use it occasionally to stitch up a muslin/toile that I have no intention of wearing, but mostly I use it for hand basting. It doesn't require waxing at all to prevent twisting and removes easily.

Thank you for this information. I have a 201k where the set screw on the right will not hold the tension unit in place. I’m wondering if you have any suggestions on what to do. It seems like the screw is too short to hold it properly. I’m guessing it would be impossible to find a replacement screw?
