You mentioned how lucky Tulio and Miguel are in passing as gods, there’s an interesting theory that the armadillo they found is actually the god haha. If you watch the volcano scene again, when they first get to El Dorado, and look at the armadillo it’s definitely believable
@Kimtroverted

I always thought Chel was a God. Everything from the first collision by the waterfall, to the volcano, to the sports match, all happen around her. Even the boat sealing the entrance has a sort of deus ex machina reactions. Although you are right, the armadillo also in all those scenes as well... Well Divine or not, Chel is a Goddess 😏

A couple fun facts about this movie: Usually voice actors record their lines separately, but Tulio and Miguel were in the studio together to make it possible to play off each other. For the big water ship scene at the end, a new engine had to be created to simulate the movement of the water. Sadly, this movie was a flop, much like Atlantis and so no sequel was ever made.

I’m glad there was never a sequel, it stands so well on it’s own that a sequel would just dilute the adventure. It is a shame that it flopped though, this movie deserves a lot more love than it gets
@Scarshadow666
@Scarshadow666 2 года назад
@@tomsamper4345 Eh, I half-agree that a sequel would be pretty meh, but I would've thought it'd have one of those cheap tv show spin-offs while growing up. Out of most of the other early 2000's animated movies that flopped during the time period, this one kinda ended less definitively, and on a hint that the main quadruple continues on for more adventures into the sunset (similar with Sinbad too). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
@tomsamper4345
@tomsamper4345 2 года назад
@@Scarshadow666 you’re not wrong about the setup but that actually why I specifically don’t want there to have been one. In my humble opinion the idea of letting the audience’s imagination fill in the blanks or expand past the ending is a powerful tool that is woefully underutilized in this day and age. Not everything needs to be or even should be a franchise, just let a story that captivates the imagination hold on its own.

In a way Tzekel kan got what he wanted, he found a 'diety' that matched the right image and mindset, but what he missed was the possibility that his gods(or anyone like them) see him as just another puny mortal like everyone else and he wasn't gonna be rewarded for his loyalty like he probably thought. Also considering how the opening was the gods providing a lush jungle paradise filled with life, I'm not sure where Tzekel kan got the notion they were the 'the bloodthirsty rule with an iron fist' type, I'm taking that as a 'this is what i want rather than what they actually want' thing.

One of the more interesting and nuanced parts of this movie to me is how Tulio and Miguel think they're conning everyone (except Chel), but in reality, the village chief and high priest knew from the very start and used them to further their power plays against each other. The greater scope conflict of the story is the government vs. the church and that's something not often seen, especially in animated kids movies.

Honestly, I'm kinda glad there aren't any sequels, so that nothing can ruin the original movie

Since you appeared to enjoy this movie (and Atlantis Lost Empire), here's a short list of movies of the same "genre" of fun and adventure with a little bit of music Atlantis The lost Empire's "Sequel" Atlantis Milo's Return Quest for Camelot Sinbad: Legend of the Seven Seas The Prince of Egypt

This move is based on the Road to movies, parody movies from the 30s to the 60s, that usually made fun of the genre of the time, and the studios they worked for, and broke the 4th wall, while going to a "exotic" country where the 2 heroes would backstab each others for the main pretty girl of each movie, while making jokes ^^

I love this movie so much ! You should react to the other 2D animation style movies from Dreamworks like Sinbad or Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron. Along wirh The Road to Eldorado they have amazing visuals and great storytelling !

Since I haven't seen it in the comments yet, in Aztec mythology (or, at least, an extremely simplified version) the jaguar was not only a life-and-death sort of encounter, but a symbol of the power of the afterlife, and human sacrifices were most common in the name of a jaguar god. In the Aztec-or-as-well-as-white-people-understood-of-it faith, the Jaguar god was THE god to make human sacrifices to.

Much as I love Miguel's optimism when it comes to pretty much everything, I'm also definitely much more like Tulio when it comes to looking at things with pessimistic realism.

Fun fact El Dorado just translate to The Golden, the RU-vid channel Overly Sarcastic Productions has a good video that summarizes the origin of the myth

This film reminded me of an early Nickolodean series, The Secret Cities of Gold, or some such. It was an adventure of a couple of Spanish stowaways, or maybe sailors who deserted, partnered with a couple of kids, and sought the legendary hidden city of gold. Spoiler, it was an ancient South American civilization that had mastered space flight! No, really. I don't remember it too well, I was like 6, maybe 8. Young. Still, very similar in my memory.

As a queer kid growing up this was my favorite movie. It’s basically confirmed by the studio that they were a gay couple And then they had to somehow come up with a way to make it straight so they added the girl. I love their dynamic so much.

They added alot of mature things in kids movies because kids never would get it, heck cartoons like Code Lyoko (hardcore fan here) go veeeery far and do some pretty extreme things like having children face near death and if you want an example of this in that show, look up the episodes Killer Music and Common Interest because yeah, it actually did that and it aired on the Cartoon Network block Miguzi and therefore CN.

This was partially a modern riff on a series of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby comedies starting with _The Road to Singapore_ in 1940 and ending with _The Road to Hong Kong_ in 1962 (Dorothy Lamour was in six of them, but bowed out on the seventh). They were iconic movies about two disreputable friends getting into improbable hijinx, and even if you've never seen them, you've probably seen other riffs on them, as they inspired a lot of later humor. This movie was a worthy successor. :)

I think I'll watch this in full on Patreon if I have time. I really enjoyed the highlights and the humour is just the best! I haven't seen this since I was a kid but I remember it came on TV and it didn't faze me then. I notice a lot of reactors find films that I watched as a kid "dark" or "adult"...like even Hercules because it dealt with death a lot. Side note, I was laughing when you said "we just cut away and everything is better? There's no sharks to deal with?"...ever the optimist, Thor 😂Anyway, this is such a beautifully animated film. The city reminded me of so many things...Tower of Babel, Egypt, Meereen (Game of Thrones) but also like you mentioned, the paradise in Lion King too. Anyway, great reaction as usual! This was super fun :)
