I actually manage to get the seeds sent to me in California. Here, it is considered a weed but I do plan on keeping it in a big pot. :)

Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom. I found a patch by my home and have been harvesting a small amount each season. Sadly last year a tried to make an oil infusion but i used leaves and flowers and it turned out slightly purple not biright red 😢.

I am from North Idaho. I just found some St John’s Wort today for the first time. My husband suffers depression so I hope it will help him.

Hi, fellow Idahoan! Be sure to look at the contraindications for St. John's wort, as this is an herb that interacts with many medications. If he's not taking any, then it's worth a try! I love it for seasonal sadness in the winter.

Depending on the weather conditions some years, SJW can have red tips on the leaves. Ours do somewhat this year in fact, although I don't see this often. It's also possible that you might have a different species of Hypericum. You want to be sure it's a true H. perforatum, which will give you the red/purple spots on your fingers when the buds are crushed.

Very cool. I found several plants in clusters growing, just flowering now.in middle Massachusetts. How do i make the oil and tea. Great video

Hi, David! I actually have videos about the tincture and the infused oil right here on my channel. For the tea, just dry the herb and steep in just boiled water for 20-30 minutes. Cover the cup so volatile oils don't evaporate out. I use about 2 tsp dried herb, or you can add about 1/8 cup fresh.

I only realized a year ago that St John’s Wort is growing wild on our property (we’re in western Oregon). I made a tincture from it last summer but would like to try the infused oil you mentioned. Could you describe how you do it? Do you use the entire top of the plant or just the flowers? I’ve read that the plant loses most of its potency when dried which is really a shame!
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 3 года назад
It does---freshly wilted (to release excess moisture so it doesn't mold in the oil) is best for the infused oil. I have a video here on my channel! :-)

Hi , do all varieties of st johns -wort go purple when crushed ?. thank you ;-)
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas Месяц назад
No, only 2-3 have the medicinal properties. :-) Hypericum perforatum is the primary species.

Hello Heidi, I have a St. John's Wort bush that the previous owners of my home planted over 16 years ago. It has beautiful fluffy yellow centers and the bumble bees love it. I have been wanting to use it for years but I'm not sure if it is medicinal like the wild plant you are harvesting. I've researched it but I do not know exactly which species it is. Do you have any knowledge of this type of plant that is purchased from nurseries?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 3 года назад
Hi, Kelly! If you're sure it's a species of Hypericum, then simply squeeze the buds. If you see the reddish color, then you've got the right species! There are only two that will give you this color.

I bought some seeds, but nothing happened when I did my first planting run - Do I need to germinate this seeds in a different manner? I just planted them in soil in a small planter, but I did not get one plant

St. John's is finicky when growing from seed. Once you get a patch established, though, they self-seed beautifully. I'd try to buy a few actual plants and create the environment they like and see what happens next year with the reseeding.

Can st. John's wort and milk thistle be taken together?
@HeidiVillegas
@HeidiVillegas 2 года назад
This would depend on why you're taking each of them as well as if you're on other medications. They do have some interactions between the two and also with certain pharmaceuticals. Both should be avoided if you're on anti-depressant or other mental health medications. Speak with a doctor if on medications. :-)

I couldn't get out to find st John's wort this year because of diabetic neuropathy. I couldn't walk and that's why I was so desperate for some. Oh well maybe next year? I'm looking for someone who maybe would like to sell me a quart for a reasonable price, or maybe a trade.
