After enduring an excruciating youth at the hands of her mother and step father, isolated on a mountainside, Misty was forced into an Amish settlement at 18 years old. Though in many ways this new lifestyle was far more liberating than what she was used to, it came with darker days than she could’ve ever imagined. Hurt and blamed by those most trusted she took a risk and tried to escape.

Hello, ladies! I am an adult who was raised in a strict JW family and community in the 1980’s and 1990’s. My parents were converts in the 70’s, and I was born into the religion. I ended up leaving at 26, with my daughter. My mother was mentally ill, and abusive, and my elder father was never there. When the Ruby Franke case hit, I really resonated with it, and have been binge watching a lot of content like this to help me with my own healing journey. I feel the same as you when I realize how much religious abuse still happens everyday, and we need to talk about it!! These monsters don’t get to hide behind the Bible, or religion anymore! Thank you for sharing your story! ❤

I don’t know if you have followed any of the content regarding Mormons religion. It’s very interesting topic. Shalice has on a lot of former Mormons. earlier this week a house blew up somewhere in Utah. It killed one elderly woman and another 82 year old woman survived. The 82-year-old was helped by her neighbors and the first thing she said was I hope this doesn’t interfere with my temple recommend .

Sending a child away or throwing them out of the house with the expectation that the child will fail and be forced to beg to return under even worse conditions is VERY common. My mother threw me out with the clothes on my back at 16. I thrived.

I didn’t realize how backwards the mandatory reporting laws were, until hearing it spelled out in this video. How does it benefit society to allow the majority of citizens not to report child abuse? I’m starting to see why conspiracy nuts think the government is involved in child sex trafficking. All citizens should be legally required to report violent crimes against children.

This will be a controversial comment: I do not think that any religion is safe for women and children. I was raised in a mainstream Protestant religion. Male high school teachers took advantage of their teen students at the Lutheran high school. The teen girls were interrogated and blamed over the male adults who were harassing the teen girls.

That school was completely wrong and dangerous. Others come to the aid of victims and have stronger protective standards for children. It really is time for churches to realize that predators can prey on children in places that are too trusting of people who volunteer.

Society has turned shamelessly unethical when instead of our natural instict of protecting our young ones ppl look the other way (.i mean i ve seen a lioness protect a small deer .cats ,young ducklings ,a chicken keeping warm a kitten .kittens suckling from dogs ..) the second thing is stop making children to bow down be kind and comply to anybody except the truth

The amount of women & children that have been abused by men in a position of power in religion is sad. The fact that many victims didn’t say anything out of fear of consequences and for these men to not seek help from the very religion that is allegedly supposed to make you a better person shows that religion doesn’t always work. They instill fear to do things to not go to hell yet they make their own lives and everyone around them hell thru their actions. They beat their chest about God and Jesus Christ yet they do not live righteously.

Churches are filled with misogyny, and it's even known the early Church Fathers belittled women with comments such as women are half a man, women are the gateway to hell etc. Then twisting Scriptures about women being submissive and keeping silent in Church. I'm a Christian and I love the Lord Jesus Christ His treatment of women was revolutionary for it's time. Yet over and over again men in the Church are abusing their positions of power by silencing of women, silencing their thoughts and needs , and treating women as inferior. I stopped going to any Church for this reason because even in 2024 the Church is still far behind in treating women respectfully. I stilfollow my Lord Jesus Christ and am doing postgraduate in Theology and Philosophy and am hoping to write books etc about these situations and how to change these cycles of abuse to women in Churches. Boys need to be brought up to be responsible for their behaviour and not to treat females as second class beings.

So many children don’t even realize what they are experiencing is not normal and grow to accept future abuse because of it and we need more people making sure that those children know that abuse is not normal, it’s not okay, and they have a right to be safe.

Hi Ladies. An incredible interview, great job Shelise. 👏 Misty, I'm overwhelmed....how you have endured so much yet managed to become an eternal fighter and advocate, a career success, a mother, a wife, an author, an inspiration for a series, on the path for your nursing masters. It's just overwhelming and angering and sad and inspiring to hear your story. I think you have so much to offer the world and you've probably only just begun. Much love and respect from me. ❤

I ordered the book! Will pass it to others, so they can be informed. I have an Amish friend with 5 boys. Her group is much more free. They had a phone shack before. I think she has a cell now. She & her husband mix with many non amish & he seems like any other average husband. He takes good charge of their youngest...every group is unique.

I get that, but it just justify anything that these people do. Just because one family is what you deem "okay" doesn't mean they are. So much happens behind closed doors. They put on a show. I truly hope your friend and her husband are the good ones. 👍

She didn't escape the Amish Bishop, and her story sound so much like fundamental evangelical religion, The clothing might be different but the premise that females are always responsible for a mans sexual behavior and sexual acts to them is ridiculous. Men should be responsible for their own behavior not given a pass.

This is one of the many gripes, I had as a child within the Christian religious faction. There is barely any punishment for male abusers, yet the responsibility falls on women and children to be faultless not to cause problems. I've struggled a lot trying to understand how any religion allows for this behaviour. I had to take a break from this interview.

I so resonate with her passion to help the children. However, I don't believe the government can help any more than what the laws on the books now do. The best thing she can do is what she is doing, telling her story and stories of others. Making people aware of their responsibility to help.

I lived in Pennsylvania from 14yrs old to 21yrs old. I lived in Chester County which is next to Lancaster. I am very familiar with the Amish. We have a close friend who grew up in Lancaster and as teenagers would go to parties with Amish kids who snuck out to party or who hid their cars on peoples property. I always assumed it was such a wonderful community. And it can be. From what I know the Lancaster Amish were not as strict and harsh as some of the others. I think you have bad in any community. Thank you for this story. It makes me so sad the amount of abuse I keep hearing about. But I am so happy about the resilience, strength, and perseverance of these women!!! What an amazing story! Thank you Wow!! Talk about Devine intervention!! And coming full circle! The detective reading your book at the exact time the children from the family you were with were able to report gives me such chills and tears of joy!!!~ The amount of child SA and physical abuse we are seeing in this world right now is so horrible!

Abu5e is one of the reasons why NYC's Bored of Education tries real hard to avoid allowing homeschooling. Public education means kids who are in danger are seen every day, sometimes giving them the only food they get. Homeschool kids are under the radar, and nobody checks on them unless theres a complaint.

I think there should be a middle ground between a total ban and no oversight. Some kids do better with educational alternatives, especially children who are high level in a sport, kids struggling with mental or physical illnesses, and kids with special needs, but the complete lack of oversight is terrifying. Apparently Massachusetts has it where you have to supply the curriculum every year and the kids still have to appear before school administration with regularity for things like testing. I think that offers a fair balance. The curriculum is supervised and the kids are regularly seen. Plus many parents who might think it's easier to go under the radar are given so many hoops and so much supervision that suddenly public education is the easier option. So parents are incentivized against this route unless it's necessary.
@rickhouse-ik8bu
@rickhouse-ik8bu 3 месяца назад
@@tiryaclearsong421 States should be adopting the Massachusetts standards for homeschooling. But they won't because of the notion that any kind of gummint control infringes on "muh rites". Scores of people have been educationally handicapped because of the narcissism of religious fanatics and antigovernment lunatics.😣

@@tiryaclearsong421. I totally agree. I have seen too many abuses of home schooling; children not learning to read, using an older child to stay home to take care of younger children etc. I think your recommendations make a lot of sense. It should be an option but the parent has to be held accountable and the child should be regularly supervised.

Great interview! I am so sad for children who grow up in malignant cluster B environments! It seems like people in these closed religious environments suffer from huge generational traumas that generate personality disorders and facilitate abuse. A bit off the real topic, but : I have never been an Amish, and still I am annoyed by the humming of the fridge, and really hate the sound of vacuum cleaners and hair dryers, and I have done so since I was a kid. Also, I hate modern electric lights, especially LEDs. However, I love the washing machine, even though it is noisy, too. I do the dishes by hand, but I am relieved to not have to hand wash and then wring all my clothes dry
