Forced Landing - Grumman Style 

God bless you sir. I am glad you survived this accident and pray for your full healing and return of all mobility. There is a reason you survived. Considering the crash dynamics it speaks to the fact you are one strong and tough man. You made a quick assessment of your options considering the outcome to avoid possible tragedy to others on the ground. Respects to you and your loved ones. My jaw dropped when I realized the person speaking was the pilot. Glad to see you made it out. Good luck with the recovery and good job on getting her to the grass.

I broke my neck and lost the ability to move my hands or legs completely and thankfully 20 days later I started to get some movement back and I was able to walk again after going through rehab. It took about a year to get fully recovered. I pray you get better just remember the mind is powerful so keep positive thoughts.

Wishing you the best from down under, I am a T12 survivor myself, burst fracture back in 1992. You are much stronger now then I was at the same stage, I was a mess, I thought my life was over, but it wasn't, I fathered two beautiful children who are now 19 and 22, I am a watchmaker by trade and doing very well for myself. I truly wish you the speediest of recoveries, and truly hope you regain all of your limbs. I never recovered, my injuries were severe to say the least, but once your swelling goes down, you could be amazed at what returns.

I fly out of MWO and I remember hearing about your accident on the local news. Great to see you're still with us. I'm humbled by your attitude. Praying you get back on your feet. Thanks for sharing with us!

You have one real positive attitude sir and doing all you can,thank you for preparing this insightful video into the crash,I know how strong these aircraft are having worked on them in the past including the AA-1 Yankee which a friend skidded on wet grass one evening coming back to his strip,the aircraft went through the hedge but he was fine and the aircraft was eventually rebuilt,I wish you well for the future,your video will really help others we can all learn from it,thank you.

So grateful that you survived. Very thankful you are sharing this with us. A friend’s mother suffered a stroke and lost use of her left arm and leg. Years later she regained them. I wish you a speedy recovery

Awesome testimonial to the effect of gravity and cooler heads. I spent 8 years as a paramedic and 8 years prior to that as an aircraft maintenance specialist in the Air force it just wasn't your turn. I hope things have turned out well for you.

As the father of a General Aviation pilot (who coincidentally I spoke to earlier this evening about taking me up again), it’s these incidents that always concern me whenever he pilots a single engine plane, and when he’s working his regular job as a flight attendant I worry about bird strikes and a Cactus 1549 scenario. The bravery of pilots never ceases to amaze me. I’m grateful as a dad of a pilot that you’re here with us and able to communicate to us the circumstances involving your accident and to offer your encouragement which is beyond special and much appreciated. Thank-you for the insight of a forced landing at low altitude. What most don't realize is the very short time there is from engine out to hit the ground. I had a 8 g forced landing but was able to repair the aircraft. Bursed L1 no nerve damage.

Such a bummer...sorry for your losses. Thanks for this video, very helpful, brave, sobering. Maintenance work done immediately before a problem like this, is often the cause...it’s the big variable in the equation in thiscase and has been in many others.

So sorry to learn of your accident but glad you survived what was clearly a horrendous impact! I owned and flew an AA1A 1972 model between 1977 - 1992 and clocked up about 2000 hrs on that aircraft into which I also installed a Lyc 0-320 which made it a great performer especially where I fly at Johannesburg South Africa which is 5500' AMSL. I used to be a member of the AYA when Bill Marvel was President and Stu Wilson Treasurer and visited with them in California in 1989, flying across country in Grumman Tigers to Cable, Wisconsin for the AYA Convention. Had a great time with a great bunch of flying folks! A friend with a standard AA1B had a similar take-off accident where his fully-laden aircraft stalled out on climb out as a result of high density altitude - it never really got flying and finally stalled in from about 80 feet. The damage was similar but less to his aircraft and we all reckoned that the thing that saved him and his fiancee, the passenger, was the honeycomb sandwich construction of the cockpit, which remained undistorted. His injury was smashed teeth as he was thrown forward into the control yoke and his fiancee broke her collarbone since she had her shoulder strap tight! They were lucky to have been in a Grumman, any other common light aircraft would have folded up around them and caused worse injuries. The aircraft was totalled. Best of luck with your full recovery, as you say, there is hard work to do.

Excellent message for all of us aviators who dare tempt fate and pray that what you went through I do not have to experience. Face with the options that you had, you possibly did the only thing you could do, and remarkably, survived, that was a hell of crash landing. God must have been with you and perhaps he is now using you to tell your story so we can be mindful of the consequences a maintain aircrafts properly, and more to the point, for us to keep practicing engine failures and emergency landings as regularly as we can afford to. I'm glad u made it out. No pilot really knows what he's going to do in that situation. But sounds like u made the right choice. I think tragedy is a part of life. Your story is going to help outher pilots. GOD only knows how many will be saved. Take care of yourself and may GOD continue to bless you.

Highest of admiration to you for your will to survive and the courage you exude by sharing your experience with others. As an aside, for the last 12 years I have hunted ducks with the same hunting buddy, using only 1 boat, his boat, a 14ft Grumman. We are both portly fellers. Our fatassness, combined with the precarious situations and downright destructive irreverence shown that boat should have seen her peal apart at every pop-riveted seam during that first hunting season, but alas......she remains seaworthy after 12. In this crash, with the force of impact being claimed to be ~24g’s, I was surprised the aircraft wasn’t in thousands of tiny pieces. Then the pilot says “it’s a Grumman.” Now, I’m not so surprised. Apparently, anything Grumman-built is almost as tough as the pilot seen in this video. Thanks for sharing.
