Some of you have waited a long time for this. I assure you, it's worth the wait. Make sure you watch the video till the very end or you might miss something.
Yes, it was sad to find out that my block was likely not going to work for me. Don't feel too bad though, I'm already working on the solution. All I can say is, the solution... well, maybe I won't say anything.

it is so difficult to stop watching your vids... I learned so much about cars, its parts, maintenance, etc from your channel even though I'm not "the car guy" like many others... now I'm able to maintain not only basic repairs on my car => not being ripped off anymore by cheap and fast mechanics - thank You Eric :)

I enjoyed this video well done Eric! One thing I have always loved about your videos is you actually say the size of the bolts and you explain how things work together. I am no master mechanic or anything I have learned from my mistakes and I have learned from your videos thank you for doing what you do! Oh and hey that's a nice turbo when you go to install it you should go over clocking the turbo for the ease of the oil drain and what not!

I am living vicariously through you Eric with this build. I have had my Fairmont project (1981 Durango pickup) sitting in my side yard for nearly 5 years now waiting for me to start on it but life keeps getting in the way. I'm inspired to finally get this thing going (although I am going in a very slightly different direction by changing to fuel injection from a 1988-1993 Mustang). LETS DO THIS!

Great vid and timely for me as well. Going to rebuild my 85 GT this winter. Engine is out of the car and sitting on a stand. I will be doing a tear down in the next week or two before dropping the block off at the machine shop. This video has given me a lot more confidence for my first tear down of an engine. Thanks!

Not only remove all parts from block to save machine shop labor but also, you won't get them back. On my 302, I left the transmission alignment bushings in. Did not notice they were missing until I went to put the engine in. That was and unexpected delay as most auto prts stores were clueless on finding them.

I would just like to say, I really appreciate the videos you make. You're very informative. Seems like pretty much every video you're telling us some useful tip you've had to learn the hard way. You show the process of doing the entire job. You also put out long videos like this. Sure you could have broke this up into 10 minute videos ranging from part 1 to whatever for ad revenue, but you didn't. It's a pleasure to watch, learn, and be entertained by you. Thank you for this arsenal of mechanical information, Eric.

Just an educated guess being that he didn't day , if the tight piston rod assembly come out of the cylinder with the pitting , the water that set in that cylinder to cause the pitting may have been in the cylinder when the engine was fired up . The resulting hydrolock could have bent the wrist pin . This would cause binding . The lack of cylinder ridge wear and cleanliness of the motor indicates that the motor wasn't run too much since the last build . If the motor was only bored .030' over you would still have .030' to bore out which might just clean up that pitting . you can always have the machine shop start with that cylinder to see . If it does clean up all the pitting continue with the rest if not get a new block . The nicks in the bottom of the cylinders most likely caused by the use of heavy duty rods and or rod bolts that weren't properly clearanced before assembly . The bottom end of the block can be notched properly and fix that . Of course you can use these problems as an excuse to get another core to build and get a 351 put those heads on . There is no replacement for displacement ! I once had a 1978 Camaro that I built a 385 cubic inch vortec motor for and finished it off with an air cleaner and value covers that said 5.0 l Vortec on them to add to the sleeper effect . but not much point in that with a turbo order the hood .
@Riptides99
@Riptides99 8 лет назад
Damn good call, I just went back and watched it twice and can confirm that you're absolutely correct on the tight piston rod assembly coming from the cylinder with the pitting.

those years of ford 302 had a high nickel content in the block and most did not get much ridge even on engines with 150k miles and being a 302 they have thin castings and a .040 over bore is pushing it on most blocks
@jamisgood21
@jamisgood21 5 лет назад
My first though seeing those notches was looks like where you're supposed to notch the block for a stroker crankshaft to clear the rod bolts.

i did a ground up rebuild on a 351 clevo with no prior mechanical training was rather easy really checked all the bearing tolerances all that needed doing when i was 25. man did that thing fly left a turboed cordia sitting at 280kmh he told me the next day he was doing 280kmh and like a flash i went past him and disappeared the car was a very low 1973 xa superbird coupe and spin in all 4 gears till the cows come home wicked

im sure a dozen people have told you this by now but you can have that bad cylinder sleeved, they will bore it way over then press a steel sleeve in then bore then bore the sleeve out to match the other bores, the gouges in the bottom of the cylinder walls is probably from someone installing a stroker crankshaft without clearencing the block so the rod bolts wouldnt hit it

EricTheCarGuy: How's it running though? If that was a stroker crank, it might be damaged from the lack of clearance that caused all that damage to the bottoms of the cylinders and it might damage your new block. YIKES! Didn't know about strokers. This engine shit is rich!
@ivantalbott8721
@ivantalbott8721 8 лет назад
The damage when you took the oil pan off could be from the connecting rods coming into contact with the inside of the block, this happens when you don't tighten the connecting rod caps and that can happen, hope that might've helped, love your show! Keep the good work up Eric

The orientation of the connecting rod end caps is for the locks on the bearing, if you reverse them the bearings will spin. Modern engines use use fracture split sintered metal rods which work okay for normal applications, performance applications need forged rods. Roller lifters can be moved around it is really pitting or other abnormal wear (as well as a failed hydraulic section) is what you should be concerned with. If you reuse them flush them with diesel and refill them with 40 wt. As far as 2 bolt vs 4 bolt the LS engines have em beat with 6 bolt, better flowing heads, better cam design the weak point is their oil pumps and that stupid rubber plug at the end of the galley which can pop out and cause no oil pressure. I machine in an actual plug which those boys at GM should have done on day one.

The_Phantom Had a nice small car, Probe GT with HLA (hydro lash adapters) Found out the hard way that Fram filters of any 'quality' did more harm then good. Sounded like nickels in a tin can. Swapped it out for a Napa Gold (made by WIX) and it settled right down and ran like a dream. Found out later that Fram's quality isn't as good as it used to be. Cheap parts used that will just get by. Check out any NAPA oil filter display where they do a cutaway of the same filter by different companies. It's an eye opener.

John Panyon I don't know. I've seen plenty of Windsor blocks with those notches at the bottom of the cylinders. The 351 I've got right now has them and there were no signs of fretting, crank walk or any other clearance issues. It was a stock engine. I thought the same thing until I hit Google with bare 351 W block search and there it was with the notches in the same spots.

Blowthrough.
@rasvial
@rasvial 8 лет назад
I wish you luck- that will require some patience to get right. Blowthrough can work just fine though- basically it's just like any other carb (with some extra gimmicks of course), with the biggest difficulty being it's in a high pressure feed- so it's harder to just rip of the air filter and look inside to see what's not working right.

Not the greatest idea on a stock 5.0 block. The block webbing cracks pretty much no matter what you do if you run it above around 500hp. 450 is still pushing it but it can last a while if you're lucky. Not very strong blocks unfortunately.
@dkongul

hellloooo that block is not going to stay stock. In fact it is not certain that he is going to use that block. have you seen the pitting on cylnder wall, awfull
@lilmanjeeps

Changing parts inside the block doesn't change the block. It's still stock.

Are you going to run the whole ON3 kit? I can't speak for them on the push rod stuff but I have their kit with a few upgrades on my '07 GT. I am very pleased. We went 6.90s at 6#s on a complete stock 3v drive train. Now we are getting the car ready for round 2. 10.5:1 comp and a lot more boost with e85. Shooting for 6.0s

Yes I am using the whole kit. Thanks for the input. I don't think I'll be running 6's though. :)

EricTheCarGuy Carb is most definitely not better. A tiny bit cooler charge is nothing compared to terrible mixture control. Do it right the first time Eric.

Bagging and tagging WORKS. The first time I did it was the first time I remember not having parts left over on a huge project that wasn't my own. Edit: I never had stuff left over once I started working as a tech professionally. But I always had stuff left over at home up until that point. But that's about the time I started taking inventory and making sure I did things correctly as well as b&t bolts and nuts.

If you really want to piss off people, get a turbocharged Honda V6, stick it in that Fairmont and put a few Type R stickers on it. And then watch a tsunami of butthurt roll in.

I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS ERIC🙏🏼😇🌅😎I personally have been known to not get back to a particular project for a little while and have also forgotten where specific bolts go.. now I draw the part on card board and put the bolts in the picture where they go on the real part of the pay stays on the engine or car😉

@q...... 8 лет назад
Lol, yeah. Well it wasn't a lot of work or at least "good" work. Anyway the filter. I used those for a while up until I saw a few videos of them being dissected and the piss poor material inside. My main reason for choosing it was the material on the end making it a bit easier to grip. If better filters had that on it or something similar I am sure they would sell more.
