This video will show a good alternative to remove excessive free play between the rear axle and hub on a Ford 8N. In this case, I had new hubs but was reusing the axles on which the splines were worn. Prior to this fix when the rear wheels were grabbed at the top and shaken in and out, there was a lot of movement in the wheel assembly. After this fix, there is no excessive play in the rear wheels. This project was completed in 2017 and has held up well. The tractor is used for mowing with a 4' rough-cut mower and there is still no excessive play in the rear wheels. So I can confidently say that the fix has worked well. By the way, the splines on the end of the axle shaft and the splines on the hub should be even with each other, so install the shims in such a manner as to do that.
