So much easier and better designed than on my previous 2000 CVPI. The top nuts on the rear shocks were secreted in a tight space and most of the time you would have to cut it off to get it off. Too bad the front shocks aren't as simple.
Got them installed no problems, no more rear end sag. Rear sits a little higher than the front maybe an inch or less. Used the Monroe 550055, had bought springs but they were way too stiff. They were the suncore 40f-30-hd, they felt like i was riding on a tractor. I ended up using the stock springs and McBay 1" billet aluminum spacers. The car rides very smooth now and no more sag.
@@WJHandyDad I did have to remove the brake lines and they are dripping some after putting them back on. Car is a 2006 Ford Crown Vic LX w/ rear disc. Would the doorman 484-180 fit the rear caliper? Id assume it would because there are no copper washers for the rear, they only list them as front.
@@TheSicWolfGaming there should be a crush washer on the brake line, or you don't have it tight enough. The crazy thing is you may get air in through the master cylinder and have either an easy or a nightmarish brake bleed ahead of you
I have plans to do the same repair to my P71, as the ride is a bit harsh for my taste. I, too, have a passion for the P71's, but have the means to drive something much more mainstream.
I know this vid is a bit old but I had recently wanted to try these rear shocks myself. Was curious how the ride was after the installation. Thank you.
I picked up the Gabriel version of those from summit racing. Out of town for a few weeks then I'm going to put them on. My crown is a 2001. Part number is GAB-34073 and GAB-43140. Will get back to you guys if they are any good. Thank you for this video.
Great video, but I was told that you usually torque the bottom one with wheel back on and on the ground, so it is under the full weight of car. Does that not apply here?
not for my particular year model, but there certainly are things that are to be torqued that way. Best is to check your shop manual to make sure if you are doing a different year model than mine which should be the same for 2007-2011 for sure, and possibly 2003-2011
Have you ever noticed the police interceptor shocks being too stiff when the car is empty? I am getting new shocks put on and they are the heavy duty police interceptor shocks but my concern is that if they are made for weight but I have an empty P71, will they raise too much weight off the rear tires causing a safety hazard? Thanks!
when you say "improve" what do you mean by that? For me the ride was very similar to stock. Except I fixed the problem I was having of the back end kind of hopping on bumps
Hi I have a question..is it possible to install the bolts the other way around? Like the nut on the inside im having clearance issues on a vic with some rims
I have a 2006 Crown Vic LX non police, these should fit right? Getting alot of suspension sag in the rear. Looking to upgrade the rear shocks and springs. I recently installed a trailer hitch and this makes the problem worse as it seems very low with a trailer hooked up.
As far as I know they should fit and work just fine. As far as the trailer dragging down the rear height, you might want to add some air bags inside the springs... I have a future video coming on doing that.
@@WJHandyDad I've been considering that also. I went a head and ordered new suncore heavy duty rear springs with a 1 inch spacer and also the new Monroe 550055 shocks. I measured and even with the trailer not hooked up I'm 2 inches lower in the rear vs the front. Its definitely squatting down alot in the back. I do have subs in the back too. We will see how it turns out.
What pliers did you secure the shock with for removal? I’ve tried every set of channel locks, needle nose pliers and vice grips in my (admittedly paltry) collection, and nothing grips well enough. Admittedly, the old shocks are also rusty as hell...
Then I guess I’ll have to go bigger, seeing as I tried that too. 😅 Thanks! Will be taking another crack at it on Canada Day, and steeping that top bolt in penetrating oil until then.
WJ handy dad I have some Monroe magnum shock for my 03 p71. The videos I’m watching only show installations with one silver washer/plate but both the ones I have and the ones in your video have two. What’s the second one for.
I just replaced mine. Had those 2 metal washers. One big one thin. I put em on like u did but it makes the shock sit crooked on the long bottom bolt. Are we positive its thick to inside and thin to outside?
I am about to buy these shocks for my 08 p71. But I am also installing 2 inch lowering springs at the same time. Do you think this shock being for towing would effect the ride height with lowering springs? Maybe not drop as much? I want stiff shocks that’s why I’m looking at these, and the kyb’s have to many bad reviews for leaking. Thanks. Love the videos!
How is the shocks after 3 years of use??? Do they make any noise? Are they nice and firm on the car. What is your opinion on these shocks. Good video brother.
@@WJHandyDad I just received these same ones for "towing" and extra weight? I know you said you didn't feel anything, but did you ever notice a difference when you had a full trunk, or maybe people in the back?
I bought these and after installing them, the plastic dust shield and its metal cone head rub against the car frame. This causes the dust shield apparatus to sit crooked and jump off the top retaining flange when actuated. This also then constantly rubs the frame, scratching it. The bottom rubber isolator of the shock spring also falls out after a while and then dangles from the bottom bolt and washer connection. Am i doing something wrong?
I haven't noticed any rubbing or bad angles on mine. Both of mine do have a rubber ring that seems to have fallen off from somewhere. But I haven't noticed any problems because of it and I haven't tried to put them back on. I'm just guessing here, but I wonder if you put the bottom spacers in opposite of what I did, creating an angle that rubs on your car frame?
if they are leaking they need to be replaced. The fluid inside of them that makes them work is leaking out. You should be able to verify it by looking at them. If they have fluid on them they are bad.
I understand... sometimes that is the hard part. I've had really good luck buying from all those places. I usually search by my year model and then look at the prices, features, and reviews and try to pick the best bang for the buck option based on what I'm seeing on their website. Good luck. Let us know how it works out for you.
Why did you change them out was the ride getting bad? After you changed them out how does it ride! I only ask this because I'm thinking about changing mine out I have 2011 with 98000 and it seems to be bumpy but not sure if that's how they should be?
I have a tow hitch on my P71 and I noticed in recent months that it is hitting when I enter or exit certain raised driveways that it didn't used to hit. That was really the only symptom I had. I wanted to see if these towing shocks would solve that problem. The ride quality is about the same as best as I can tell (I haven't driven it much over the holidays). I may look into doing the rear springs next to see if they are sagging. But I didn't have any of the traditional signs of shock failure (things like bouncing or visible oil leaks)
I bought the wrong year. My 2002 has those damn things WAYYYYY far into the center of the car. I've had to cut the trunk open to access the top to keep the shock from spinning and it still takes an hour of spinning the nut 1/32 of a turn each movement of the wrench. Since I already have a big hole in the trunk, I'm just gonna go ahead and saw the shock in half and pull it out from said hole. Now only the install will suck. Should only take two hours to tighten the top nut a whopping five threads down.
I am thinking about these shocks for my 11 but without the towing package. What are your thoughts on this product and will the car perform the same or better with these shocks ?
Thanks now show a video of you doing the front....I'm wondering if I can replace the front shock which is inside of the coil without messing up the alignment. I have a Grand Marquis but still want to keep the plush ride.
Just wondering about the nuts and bolts for this: can you safely reuse the same nut without worrying about them loosening over time? Are they nyloc nuts?
this (and the spring & link change) really made a world of difference. Comfort and ride quality is about the same (no seat of the pants noticeable change), but stability is drastically improved as is hitting the tow hitch on driveways (used to happen all the time, now is rare). I haven't towed with my Vic yet but I do plan to
