your right there mate,my motto is save all tin,and for the younguns its all valuable practice making templates,shaping and butt welding,the door will look like new at the end pal,it wont take a lot of shallow filler to make it good,again dave a valuable hour of experience from you for the newbies.

Just subscribed to the channel, and I have been catching up on your content. Good save on the door. I like to see cars being repaired rather than having full on concours restorations, using 1000's of pounds of new panels to do so. The reason the wing has a less defined swage line than the doors and rear 1/4s is that it is a circa 1980s pattern panel. they were renowned for it.
@DavesGarageuk
@DavesGarageuk Год назад
Thanks for the sub Clive 👍makes sense, I guess the machines stamping out the panels were getting worn out.

I've been wrenching on cars since 1983, and I learn from every one of your videos. I've only ever begrudgingly done body work, but I'm about to straighten out and paint my 1998 GMC Safari so I'm trying to get as much knowledge as possible. Your stitch welding skills are about the best I've seen, I'll be re watching those segments over and over.

@@DavesGarageuk I just came from a car show in the Villages, which is a huge retirement subdivision near me here in Florida. A guy had a really nice rat rod T-Bucket, and you could see any patch panel added thru the primer, if it was primer. It made instantly think wow Daves welds are pretty, hard to hide anything under the mid-day Florida sun though lol.

Well done again Dave, (quite a tedious repair working to recreate the swage line and beautifully done sir!) in addition, being able to avoid spending an additional £250 on a replacement skin is a great result. (I always think that just fitting new heritage panels to any old classic is an obvious time - saving option but also a big cop-out if the old car just ends up as mainly brand new ha ha!) Big respect and thanks. 👍

Love watching your series on the Mk1 Escort. My first car was a 1972 1.1L which I bought for £100 when I was 17. Still dream of owning a mk1 RS2000 but not many of those around in Australia now :) Keep up the great work. I’m learning lots from following your videos. The way you tackle each problem is interesting and inspiring.

Great job again Dave. Just reading some of the other comments, This is my (not necessarily correct!) take on fibre loaded filler. There is a common technique that I see used by the crash repairers where the welded joint is left deliberately low, then skimmed with fibre glass filler before finishing with ordinary filler. The only reason I can see that this is a better job is that it takes care of any pin-holes in the welds, which are the only things susceptible to moisture problems. Your welds are perfect as far as I can see and will not have any pin holes. Fibre glass filler will give you a worse end result because it does not feather out and always leaves the repair high. When it comes time for paint, just strip off all the weld through back to clean bare steel, sand it to at least an 80 grit scratch, apply the skim of filler, work it to shape and epoxy prime any bare metal left. Job's a good 'un.
@DavesGarageuk
@DavesGarageuk 2 года назад
Brilliant thank you, I did wonder how well it would feather out.

Dave, congratulations on reaching 2000 subscribers, though given the quality of your work and your videos I can't understand why it's not 200K! Another brilliant video, as you say when you have nothing to loose and no fear of failure, it's amazing what you can achieve with fairly simple tools. Have you seen that bending device that Fitzee uses, comprising 3 different sized tubes welded together with a small sheet sized gap between them for putting a curve in a repair panel. You could do with a scaled down version about a foot long with a tab welded on the bottom to fit into your vice. Though you made a pretty good impression bedding over your knee. Really excellent work....... I bet you were pretty impressed too! Hope the 100E auction makes really strong money to help finance further projects, whoever wins that one will have one superb car that will give another 50 years of fun and the knowledge that it was expertly built. I really could have watched those door repairs in real time and was disappointed when the video was sped up and bits were skipped....but understand not all of your viewers are as sad as I am.

Thanks Neil, yes I've seen his tube bender tool, on my to do list to make one.

When skinning a door (or making a skin repair) always bed the skin onto the frame with a bit of body sealer (sikaflex / tiger seal etc) this helps keep water from getting between the various layers and rotting from the inside out. You were also right about the weld through primer, but it was still a decent repair 👍🏻
