It really is a numbers game. Check out our latest video to see what we've done, you may or may not be surprised. Todd carefully weighed our options and this was the best solution he found for the issues that we had.
As always, we hope you find the video useful and informative!
Thanks for watching!

►2020 Lance 1172 - We purchased from Southland RV in Atlanta, GA - August 2022 before our 3 week trip out west.
►2020 Bigfoot 10.4 Truck Camper - We got our 2020 Bigfoot 10.4 Truck Camper in October 2021. We were contacted by a couple of subscribers (now good friends) who had theirs up for sale in Upstate New York so we headed out on an adventure. We sold our 2014 Bigfoot 10.4 within one day of listing it online.
►2014 Bigfoot 10.4 Truck Camper - We got our 2014 Bigfoot 10.4 in August 2021 from RVOne near Charlotte, NC. Todd was headed to buy a brand new Bigfoot 10.4 just before we got the Lance 975 but when he got to Southland RV, it was sold. That's when we decided to go to the Lance 975. We knew at some point in the future we'd have a Bigfoot again.
►2021 Lance 975 - We got our new 2021 Lance 975 from Chattanooga Fish n Fun in Hixson, TN in August 2020. After looking at several models, we decided on the Lance 975 (Check out Brad's channel from Chattanooga Fish n Fun, he gives great, thorough overviews of some really nice boats and campers.) We sold the Lance 975 in August 2021.
►2019 Northern Lite 10-2 Truck Camper - Bought and delivered from Mountain Motors in Troy, MO on 12/2019 and sold it in 01/2020.
►2005 Northern Lite 10-2 Truck Camper - Picked up on 8/10/2019 we did major repairs, maintenance and renovations to this one and sold it in 12/2019.
2008 Bigfoot 21RB - Sold 12/2019, we went across country to purchase from a dealer in Pueblo Colorado.
►2006 Casita Spirit Deluxe - Sold 07/2018 when we bought our Bigfoot.
►2002 A-liner - Sold 05/2017 when bought our 2006 Casita Spirit Deluxe.

The best part about the 7.3 gasser is just like the old v10 gasser: 8 mpg towing, 8mpg unladen, and 8mpg sitting in the driveway 😂

My 2020 specked out the same as this gets 14.2 normal driving and pulling a 21’ bass boat 80 mph on interstate going to Canada got 12.8 the 2017 diesel it replaced got 13.5 normal and 11 on same trip to Canada plus price difference in service and fuel the gasser is worth considering. Only reason I would buy a Diesel again is if i was towing heavy load 60-70% of the time

Hello Todd, You are right it is a numbers game. We have a F450 and NL Truck camper and it is almost impossible trying to stay under that 14000 lb. GVWR. I really do not believe anyone out there that has a Dually and a large truck camper stays below that fixed GVWR. After all things are loaded and packed for an extended trip , go weigh your rig, and get ready for a shock. With added accessories on truck and camper and all camping gear thought needed , ya better get a 550 series or 5500 to carry all the stuff and stay below your fixed GVWR, Just saying. Anywho, nice new truck and hope to meet up somewhere soon!
@scottshriver5821
@scottshriver5821 Год назад
Wrong, it is not max towing capacity, it is payload in truck bed.
@scottshriver5821
@scottshriver5821 Год назад
Nia, yes. GVWR Is based upon the total weight of truck and any and all accessories in and on the truck itself plus the combined weight of truck camper and all accessories in and on it. Or any payload consisting of weight in bed = GVW. The rating is found on your inside door sticker. This rating has nothing to do with pulling a trailer with a hitch/ 5th wheel pin, other than the accrued weight of the pin weight as in a 5th wheel trailer. So pulling a trailer of any kind does not equate into the GVWR of a truck . This can as does sometimes become confusing, just remember GVWR only has to do with any and all weight in and on your truck.

The new Silverado with the Allison branded tranny is the only contender next to that Godzilla, a super stout set up! Congrats!!!

This is a smart option that is often overlooked. I stumbled upon a used 2022 with less than 4,000 miles and snapped it up right away. SuperCab, 7.3, 2WD = 6,843 lbs payload. It's the perfect tug for towing my 5th wheel. It would have taken me more than seven years just to break even on the upfront cost of a diesel.

Nice F350! I have a Lance 1172 also and I pull a 7000 lb trailer with SxS and ATV's. I took a different approach. I have F350 dually with diesel but, its a regular cab and it has the highest payload of the F350's. It has a much tighter turn radius and handles the camper and the trailer very well. Its all how you want to get the numbers. I really don't miss the crew cab and I thought I would!

I have the same year and truck package. Love it. Still needed to put air bags, and tork lift stable loads on it. I also changed up the shocks. Plus I added an in bed 7way which surprised me wasn’t part of the camper package. The truck is a beast with the 7.3L hauling my NL 10-2 but mileage averages around 9. I do miss my diesel but the gasser has more than enough for what I do. I just did a round trip from Michigan to Florida flat towing our Wrangler through ice and snow….no issues whatsoever. One other thing, you can customize some things on the Ford using Forscan which I liked a lot, like turning off the horn double beep when the truck is on and you get out of the vehicle. Nice truck brother. Glad you switched it up.

Hi E-Square, Glad to hear you got a similar setup and it's working well for you. We're hoping for the same results. Our truck didn't come with the 7 way plug in the bed either. almost bought a 7.3 but decided to stay with my 6.0. Glad I did. The 6.0 is better for towing heavy loads. I tow 6 tons on a regular basis. The 6.0 is pretty reliable if you change the oil and coolant regulary and make sure your batteries are always good. The new diesels cost too much if you need to change an injector.

Todd, I have had my 2020 F-350 7.3 Godzilla, Lariat Edition for three years. I have 49,000 on it and absolutely love it. Had two rams prior to this one. I also have a Lance 1172 (2021). Two things you will definitely want to add: 1) Roadmaster sway bar change its behavior by night and day. 2) Airlift 7500 air bags. Mileage without the camper 14-15 mpg mixed driving. Anything over 65 MPH will definitely negatively impact mileage. With the camper I get about 10-11 MPG averaging 55-65 MPH. I also have the 3.73 gears. Definitely cheaper than the diesels I have had. With diesel typically $1.00 per gallon if you get 10 MPG you would have to get 12.5 MPG on the diesel just to break even on the fuel cost. If you factor the DEF, Oil change additional cost and Initial diesel engine option spread over 180,000 miles you would have to get over 20 MPG on the diesel to break even. I think you made a good decision..... Best Wishes, Ray

@Ray346
@Ray346 Год назад
@@emiliojacaman690 When loaded I think wind resistance make the 3.73 and 4.30 ratios basically about the same economy. Driving empty the 3.73 will gain you about 0.5 to 0.75 mpg. The 3.73 will cost you in towing capacity and accelerating a load up to speed. As an electromechanical engineer in the automotive industry I have had to address points and counter points from energy consumption, diesel vs gas BTU's (130k for diesel and 90-95k for gas). I believe the 7.3 is proving itself to be a very viable alternative to diesel for moderate loads less than 16-18k lbs.

Unfortunately RV’ers get caught up in building the ultimate Rig. It seems as though everyone wants to out do the others. Heck, the new thing is to pull your 5th wheel with a class 8 tractor. Some people seem to have more money than sense. It’s nice to see you have good sense. Beautiful truck.

Couple of errors in previous message. Diesel typically 1$.00 more per gallon. Also the Road Master bars, which I know your familiar with, will dramatically improve handling with the camper on it.

I would have purchased this truck had I found it. I looked everywhere online for a lariet gas dually without luck. Ended up with a long bed 350 and 4.3 gears. My payload sticker says 3600. Some of the 5th wheels I am looking at have a pin weight of 2300 on their spec sheets so I know it's higher than that. Shoulda kept searching for a dually. Yours is a beauty and the truck looks good too. LOL!!

Nice truck. I have a 2020 F350 SRW 7.3 with 3:73 gears. I’m in the RV transport industry, the truck has 190k miles and have not had any issues so far...well except for the first gen spark plug wires. I pull 5th wheels and travel trailers including destinations models weighing from 7K to 14K shipping weight. The engine brake does well, however not as strong as a diesel but haven’t had any issues going through the mountains in Wyoming on I 80. (3-6% grades) i’m sure you’ll love it

Hi Greg, Thanks for the comment! That’s awesome to hear you have so many miles on your 7.3. So many people are being negative about it. So far I have enjoyed driving it but I haven’t hauled the camper yet so I’m looking forward to that. It’s good to hear from someone that is working their truck hard and it’s holding up. Safe travels and thanks for watching!

Thanks Randpam Adventures, Hopefully it will be enough. Our main goal was to be able to get the camper in the garage again and still have enough payload. Our Ram flatbed was just too tall to take the camper off. Thanks for watching and safe travels!

Nice truck but I think we'll stay with our used RAM 5500 4x4 Laramie diesel DRW. We wanted the extra payload so we'd never have to worry about being over loaded. Yes, ownership of the 5500 has its issues: insurance runs us $1500/year and tires are bigger and not every tire shop can repair/install them; however, peace of mind is important. We will be boon docking the majority of the time and want to be able to have full water tanks and not worry about how heavy we are and the TC we've selected has large water storage and tanks and will be a heavy TC when fully loaded. When we registered the 5500, we had to sign an affidavit certifying it was for personal use which was no problem. Your new F350 looks nice, it'll be interesting to see how it handles over time. I've always rationalized owning the diesel with big trucks have diesel engines and they run for miles and miles, and it takes a lot of miles before they're even considered broken in, just not so much with gas engines. Good luck, hope it works out for you! Who knows, we may convert at some point, too.

Love the new truck! Hey just a thought that info about insurance on an F450 versus F350 is pure gold! I bet lots of people don’t know that. you guys don’t seem super focused on RU-vid views but I was just thinking you would get a whole lot of views on a short and easy video just about insurance cost differences. Along those lines I think there are some states that consider even a 1 ton truck a commercial vehicle and I think end up costing a lot more either in registration or insurance or both in those states. Thanks you guys for another great video!❤😊🛻🚚🚛

Hi Tin Bender, That's cool you have a similar 7.3 dually. I hope it's worked out well for you and my fingers are crossed it will work out well for us. So far I have really been enjoying the truck. You have a really high payload. Sounds like you may have a regular, or extended cab to save that much weight. Very cool! Your right it's been a fight between finding a truck with a good payload and that will allow us to remove our camper while it's in the garage. We're limited with a 12'4" garage height. Thanks for watching and safe travels!

I have a 21’ f350 Godzilla as well. I ordered and purposefully did not get a diesel. ~8k miles towing up and down hills & mtns here in the PNW. I have no regrets and will not go back to a diesel. Saved ~$9k up front , $1+ per gal on fuel, no def and 1/2 the maintenance. Diesels have there place but I do not need one.

Dang that is a beautiful truck!! It's the same color scheme as my 2008 f350 except better. I love the two tone paint but yours has chrome front and rear bumpers which is preferred since you won't get rock chips in them, in my opinion the best of both worlds. You also got the higher payload with the camper prep package, and the 7.3, did you get the 4:30 gears? That's the way I would go. But honestly that's a perfectly optioned truck

Oh,, by the way, yeah you lost 75 lbs on the tailgate removal but you will gain that right back with the hitch extender for the trailer, plus a couple of pounds. I also am always bouncing on the numbers game, (have the CAT scale app on phone also). The hitch will take weight off the front axle but due to leverage points but it will add to the rear axle more than the weight of the extender.

Beautiful new truck! I'm in the research stage and considering an F450 chassis cab with a 7.3 gas engine. This would give me a wider front track axle and tighter turning radius. It will be interesting to see how you find the turning radius compared to your old 4500 Ram? Also, are you going to be able to tow the Jeep with the camper on?

Nice rig. Do yourself a favor. Buy some tork lift camper packers to store your camper on. Best thing i did. I know the Jacks are good, but getting the wieght of the camper on the stongest structural part of the camper is a piece of mind. Hit a specialty contractor lumber supply store, like a Lumbermans. Ask if they have bone yard and look some 2x lvl ( laminated veneer lumber) to use. Much stronger and usually cheaper than clear 2x6 lumber. I found some lvl scaffolding planks from a scaffolding company. They sold them to me for cheap. Ripped them down on the table saw. You won't be disappointed on going this route.

Beautiful truck! I have the same truck only difference is 6.7 diesel I tow a 6500 26 ft travel trailer and get 13 to 13.5 mpg. towing and 18 to 19 not towing . I’m very interested to see how yours does, because diesels are more expensive to operate, plus mine uses 1 qt. Of oil every 5000 miles and it’s a new truck.

I should add mine is a 2020 7.3 with a 4.30 rear. We get 20liters/100kms loaded and approx 15liters/100kms empty. Mine is also a lariat. So far so good. Lots of power even compared against my old 2017 6.7

I pretty much bought the same truck after my duramax injector pump failed on the road. I don’t need or want a diesel. Mine has 430 gears though. I think the load center point is your primary concern, too far back and the frame will tend to bow up in the middle. By the way it took eight months for the ford to arrive and the delay added 5000 dollars to the msrp. I hope I never have to order another pickup again. I do really like our f350 lariat ultimate. Fingers crossed.
