It's the battle of the front-wheel drive hot hatches as we pit the Ford Fiesta ST against the Renault Megane RS. But can the lighter Fiesta really be as quick as the more powerful Megane around a track? We decided to head to Llandow fight it out and see which one comes out on top...

No, it isn't. You can't cross compare two different sized cars on the track like; different dynamics altogether. In reality, the Megane is half a second quicker to 60 and has a 12mph higher top speed.

J-Music Centre based on the results of the video, yes you can compare them. The fiesta st is approx. 40bhp per tonne less than the megane which isnt a lot. I have the mk7 fiesta ST with the mountune mp215 kit, and fully stock the Mk7 Fiesta ST is 10bhp per tonne more than the newer Mk8 ST, so the Mk7 ST would definitely beat the megane RS especially with the MP215 kit as it gains even more power and closes the bhp per tonne to around 20bhp compared to the megane.

@@iSteveGWT power to weight is only a small part of the st's performance here, the bigger reason its so quick is the lsd and pilot super sport tyres, both of which the mk7 st doent have. The mk7 wouldnt see which way the mk8 went, mp 215 kit or not. There is a video of the clio 220 trophy vs 208 gti on the same track, and they lap in 49 seconds dead, and they were both much quicker around a lap than the mk7 st, as proven on many tracks. The real problem with the mk7 is it just understeers when you try to get back on the power exiting a corner, thankfully ford has listened and now you can have a quaife lsd in your mk8. The mp 215 kit might gain you half a second around a lap, the pilot super sports and lsd in the mk8 are worth more like 3 or 4 full seconds.

Why all the hate on the ST looks? It looks like a mini focus RS. Which is awesome! Its a fiesta not a Ferrari so chill haha Also really cool track battle because in the real world no one does over 200km/h around bends. Unless you want to die i guess...

Years ago Steve shot a video in the old Clio 200 chasing a Focus RS that showed how giving away 100bhp doesn’t really matter. Ford have it nailed at the moment with the fiesta like Renault had that Clio nailed.

That’s a genuinely quick time, I just watched the Renaultsport 220 Trophy & Peugeot Sport 208 GTi around this track and both are about 2s slower than this ST. Ford are nailing it.

The Fiesta ST is a brand new car, less than a year old. The renault clio rs Trophy and peugeot 208 gti bps are facelifted car based on 2015 (2013 for the first ones) engines / chassis. No wonder the ST is faster, it should be.

That Fiesta is a cracking car ! I bought a Megane edc with standard sport chassis last year and do i feel bad about it ? Absolutely not, it is a completely different car with a different purpose, 5 door, bigger, looks awesome and .... yes it drives awesome as well. When i go to the racetrack to watch other people drive around i take my Megane, when i go to the racetrack to have some fun i can take my LSD equipped Clio 3 RS which will be more fun than the Fiesta 😝

So the Fiesta is right up there with the Megane yet there are videos on RU-vid where the Megane comes within a second of the Type-R? I suggest people watch other videos on RU-vid, watching one channel in isolation is not going to give you the overall picture.

@@xIcarus227 I'm not arguing the point that the Type-R is quicker around a track than this Megane but what's your measuring stick for a thrashing? Like I said I've seen videos of the Megane coming within a second of the Type-R. I've also seen videos of the Megane beating the i30n, likewise I've also seen videos of the 130n beating the Megane. If the Megane can come within a whisker of the Type-R on a track in one video, yet on another video it's being beaten by the i30n, then what does that say? Is the 130n possibly on par with the Type-R? Hilarious you say? I would agree.

My son had a fiesta St and while it was definetly slower over all compared to my Cayman S I still really enjoyed driving it, a lot of fun 😀

Nice, love the look of Cayman's, wish I could afford one 😂, not all about power all the time though, take the mx5 for example, a car built that's track focused has has a 7:37 lap time around the nürburgring, that's faster than most supercars

@@silkywelshman1999 thanks, took me a long time to save my money up to buy a Cayman S but it's worth every penny 👍 Your right, it's not all about power, once a car is up and running, if its light and handles nice then it can keep its speed up. I'm personally getting a bit sick of all these 600+bhp mega cars. Only for the rich who are scared to put mileage on them and hardly ever can go full power? 😳

@@silkywelshman1999 The cupra r looks amazing but the price looks like somebody smoked too much pot. It's more expensive than an RS or a Type R, both of which kill it in just about every performance aspect. Not that it's a bad car but it sadly seems like it's relying on exclusivity (it's a limited edition) rather than actually edging the competition. Feels like a cash grab to me.

Lucas Pollard that’s never happened to mine before?? Also can’t see a shift light at the top of the Rev range which would indicate a PP or track mode if it has the PP. Who knows I guess🤷🏼‍♂️

Renault really dropped the ball with the megane and clio, went from the best hot hatch maker to just meh. Just about every other review of the megane says it's a massive disappointment.

Totally disagree, they've sacrificed a small amount of sharpness and rawness and instead made the car into a quality feeling, premium hot hatch like the Golf GTi. The problem is Renault don't sell anywhere near as many R.S cars as Ford sell ST's or VW sell GTi's. That is because RenaultSport was making much more track focussed cars that appealed to only the most die hard enthusiasts. With this new Mégane R.S Renault will make way more sales. Yeah it's a cop out but also a business. Luckily they still offer the stiffer cup chassis and the even more lively 300hp Trophy version. And it won't be long before they release a stripped track version no doubt called the Trophy-R. I absolutely love this new Mégane RS, I'm looking to trade my RS250 in against one.

@voice of reason I'm thinking about trading my RS273 for a new Trophy. :) For me this car doesn't have any competition... i30N is awesome, but looks almost like a normal i30 and doesn't have more power than my RS273, Focus RS and Type-R are known of reliability problems, VWs are not appealing me at all. If someone wants an awesome looking and nicely equpped hatchback, the new Megane RS range is great. It's just different than its predecessor. It will sell, because more people can find themselves some combination in the range - for example: basic RS 280 + EDC is a comfy everyday car, on the other side you can get a Trophy with cup chassis as standard and order lighter wheels + track tires.

@voice of reason I sold my RS250 running 300bhp/340nm last year because we needed 5 doors after a new arrival. Ive looked a Golf R, FK2, i30N, Giulietta Quadrafoglio, Focus ST and none bar the Alfa have done anything for me. The new Meg, while it isnt the outright best that the previous 250-275R was, its 5-door, much more premium interior and better economy whilst still having enough power and looks fantastic. I wont be going on track for a long time now so this new Meg fits the bill. Give it 4 years and French residuals will make this a bargain.

@Mr Unthinkable Exactly. People give too much credit to numberplates and youtube reviwers doing drifts and skids nowadays. Most people won't come even close to trackdays anyways. And the new Mégane RS isnt lacking in any laptime figures, it actualy keeps the pace with it's predecessors.

Did you drive the megane? I drove both manual and auto on circuit. Didn't like the gearbox in the manual. It is it's weakness. But i loved the car

The Fiesta is impressive for sure but open that up to a big track and the Mégane will win comfortably. I'd have the Fiesta though, it just highlights that you don't need that extra power on the roads where most people will drive 99.9% of the time.

A map on the megane 280 gives 330bhp. So map them both if one is having a map.

sirjakethebrit it’s the difference in price that’s the issue. My point about remapping the Fiesta is that it will be faster than a car that’s almost £10,000 more expensive. Also with Mountune you keep your warranty in tact where as Renault don’t have that option. On a new car warranty is key, so losing that with the Renault which are notorious for poor reliability would be a big problem.

@@Driver987 Yeah but that's not how these tests work. New vs new. Or why not go buy a seat cuppa 280 for 15k and map it for 600 quid. Then you'll have dsg and 370bhp for cheaper than a new fiesta. To be 0.2 (no real difference) is great. So I don't see what the hang up is.

Also, as for poor reliability, I think your mistaking life for the 1980s. There are numerous vids of Ford fiesta engine issues in the previous gen, yet the f4rt is solid. Could be wrong but my car at the power mine is at is fine.

Should of really had the Fiesta in sport / track mode for this test... You were driving the car or normal mode with traction off but Normal mode has a laggy turbo as its the 'eco' mode... Sport /track is instant spool for the turbo

The fiesta is an ST-3 model and in that colour with them LED headlights is £23,600 without any other extras!! fully specd is £26,000 for a fiesta!!

Yeah these 3-cyls sound pretty damn good. Seems like the uneven number of cylinders makes them quite growly, similar principle to the 5-cyls.

@@ivanlazarevic78 that's not the case at all with modern 3cyls, you should test drive one instead of relying on age-old assumptions about such engines. What you're saying is akin to the bullshit about small forced induction engines being unreliable. If the block and the internals are decent there's no reason to be less reliable aside from the fact that it has a turbocharger/supercharger and that's an extra component that can break. It's 2019, manufacturers have the necessary techniques to make 3cyls smooth.

@@sirjakethebrit 3dr rules, none of this convenience access trash...I think a "HotHatch" should only be for 3dr as that's how it all started back in the 70s but more so thru the 80s with XR3i , RS turbo, Golf GTi , Sierra RS etc etc

@@marty3469 a hot hatch is designed to do everything with minimal compromise. My one bug bare with my megane is the size of the sodding doors, unless the start making car park spaces 3' wider!

So the Uk developed Ford with a UK guy, on a small Uk track was 2 tenth off a Megane rs which did a lap another day, with some other condition, and not even filmed... Steve Sutcliff keeping the biased reviews on point since 2008.

I'm sure anybody will find a track where a Renault Twingo gt is nearly fast as a Jaguar f-type v8, with such tight corners that can only drive the Twingo in one and without using the reverse gear... :-)))

Would by an ST in an instance but with the on going reliability issues with the three cylinder Ecoboost engine,check out the Facebook section on this issue.I just can't pluck up the courage to buy one.Almost forgot,where I live,the ST is at the top of the stolen cars list.

In reality I bought the megane edc with Bose over the fiesta because it’s bigger safer better looking rarer and over 3yrs on 0% apr is only £1000 more than a fully specced fiesta at 2.9 apr .

Controversial but I really don't get this Fiesta love its not a very good looking car. Everybody talks about price but when I went to price one up was looking at 21k once you had any sort of options added I would still pick the polo gti over the fiesta its a much better built car in my opinion

I was shocked last week when I came across a 68 plate Golf R who on acceleration would pull away then when we reached 60, the ST stayed with the Golf and when it came to braking the ST was nimble and stayed with the Golf, roundabout after roundabout. When you consider the Golf R is undoubtedly one of the best hatches around this was a top performance from the little ST. I love mine so far and can’t wait for the Revo remap!

Steve Barclay I’m not disputing the Golf is quicker, and with four wheel drive it’s going to have more grip, but it’s lighter, more nimble and I find it a lot of fun.

ATE Continental Freins à disque avants ATE Continental qui équipent la Fiesta nouvelle neuve actuelle:voyez ,où plutôt écouter ce qui se passe lorsqu'on freine,c'est assourdissant,et ceci n'est qu'une partie de ces freins lamentables,car EN PLUS ,à l'arret,en tournant le volant à droite, comme à gauche,on doit suporter un craquement métallique,tout le temps.! Pour le chef d'atelier,c'est normal,mais après des milliers de kilomètres maintenant,les crissements de tôle en terminaison de freinage sont toujours làl et aussi dans les braquage de roues à l'arret! Pas la moindre amélioration! Mais ceci n'est pas sans conséquence pour Ford,car à cause de ces ATE Continental,autour de moi,plus personne ne veut prendre une Ford neuve.Qui voudrait avoir,à vie,une voiture qui fait un tel vacarme?! Qui plus est,invendable!

Something to bare in mind is the fact that Renault is running a Bridgestone Potenza S001 tyre while the Fiesta is running Michelin PilotSport 4. I really don't see them on the same level. I think that is part of the clever package offered by Ford. The 2019 ST will run 4s if you choose the 19 rims. Part of these lap times are down to how much grip the tyre provides on the given conditions. Even in such a small cicuit i would credit the Michelin 4 with up to half a second advantage. They simply brake better, keep more speed through the turn and let you feel the steering better. Renault went with Bridgestone, Hyundai with Pireli P0, Honda with Continental. Only Ford gives you Michelin on the larger rims. A very good choice. That's why i also think the ST that was recently presented will do very well on the 4s tyre. The Fiesta ST and the Megane RS are both great cars. Where i live the Megane RS and Hyundai I30N have very good prices. When fitting options to the Fiesta there's almost no price difference to the Hyundai and little to the Megane. That's why i would choose the Megane. Curious how the Focus ST will be. But as it sits for now, right here, i would go for a manual RS with the Cup chassis and standard 18 rims and upgrade later to a Michelin 4s tyre. On the street tyres do not make that much of a difference when it comes to handling because there will be fewer situations of runnig your car as hard you can. Confort and wear resistance are also very good with Michelins.

Fiesta is on either pilot supersport (standard but discontinued ) or pilot 4 (standard in 2020) No ps4s available in 205 40 r18. Bridgestone s007 on the megane are exclusively made for it and way better on dry than Michelin, almost cup 2 level

@@laddtrycksberoende Probably on the fact that small turbo engines have had problems across multiple manufacturers. Ecoboosts have had problems, the first generations of 1.0 had overheating problems and a recall was issued. The 2.3 (I know it's not small, just related) on the Focus RS also had issues where the block could effectively crack, but this was due to Ford's ineptitude of fitting the wrong head gasket. The 2.3 on the Mustang was fine as a result, because it had the proper gasket. VAG had many problematic turbo petrol engines, both their 1.0 and 1.2 had severe oil consumption and even cracking issues just like their older 1.8. There are other cases too. The idea is that manufacturers do tend to cut corners in these smaller turbo engines where the internals or the block are not strong enough to be reliable. I can't really blame people for being weary when they hear of stuff like 130-140HP/liter, but there's proof that it can be done properly (Honda with their 1.5).

Real world driving the through country lanes the fiesta would win. Think about it, it's a smaller car you can use more of the road to have better lines around bends. My old ford puma was stupid fast in these situations and that's one of the reasons why.

Kurt Phillips the puma was a class of its own and why it’s still used today on track. Even the engines get stripped into old fiestas. I’ve got the Clio 200 and on tight roads the fiesta swap gives me a good go! A puma with some money thrown at it is also a very fun race.

john jackson coming form someone that has a st3 there is not a massive amount of leg space in the back especially if the driver is 6ft or over having said that its a awesome car and really does make me smile every time i drive it. I drove it to Scotland from my house a 400 mile trip and got to 49mpg on the motorway but levelled out at 44mpg on the a-roads

@@buckleyjteams be careful if you map it and have the performance package, the LSD can't manage 240-250HP that well so you'll have to do some work yourself around the corners. It's always double edged when you remap these fine handling cars, they're optimized for their stock power.

It's pretty clear that the Fiesta ST is a phenomenal car to drive, the problem though, is that is almost completely wrong from an aesthetic point of view. It's like the Civic Type R, but on the opposite side of being "wrong". Just like the Honda, which is phenomenal to drive but embarrassing to look at, the Fiesta is phenomenal to drive, but too bland and feminine to look at, at the point of being almost embarrassing. A car, especially a sport car, should also be emotional from an aesthetic point of view, and Ford has missed this point massively.

I don't think 'feminine' is the correct term, especially considering that the old Fiesta was much more feminine. This Fiesta just looks like a van from behind or something. Reminds me of MPVs like the C-Max.

Slow and narrow track and you can race Fiat 500 against Ferrari. Renault Megane RS is much better that Focus ST and Fiesta ST is just car from the class below.
