Just found you thru SMA. Eric O has good words. I wish I had your training and knowledge 40 years ago then I could have been a better tech. Diagnostics is about mind set and workflow. Learning new things keep me young so Mr O and now your site should keep me entertained and alive for years to come. 😁

Thank you so much L1, I have a 2007 Lincoln MKZ. Same story with me I paid a shop almost $1800 to fix my ac, I purchased a TopDon artidiag. Went to the live Data that you showed us, and sure enough the brand new motorcraft ac transducer switch was reading 1.0V with 0-6 psi. I found my original ac switch that was removed originally. I plugged it in and my AC was fixed!!. Thanks to you guys, bless you all!. It now reads 2.6V and 200psi, AC blowing ice cold non stop now. The shop replaced the ac compressor and switch. Thank you!! It’s the ac transducer switch!

It’s not always the tech. Normally it’s the environment they have to work in. If you’re a tech in an even moderately busy shop, there is no tolerance for anything more than a cursory diagnosis before you had better come up with a solution. It doesn’t matter how badass of a diagnostic genius you are in that situation.

Hello Keith - Stumbled across your rant and enjoyed it so much that i'm going to head over to L1 and sign up for some of your training to see what i can learn. Actually, its funny, i started encountering the same vehicle issues that you mentioned so much with friends and family, that i started fixing cars on the side here in NC when i have spare time; mainly electrical issues since i already have that background. Thinking of even starting my own business in a year or so as i head into semi-retirement. Thanks for the content.

Well I love learning the fix on something we talked about in the classes, as I remember that question coming up. The fact is that if shops had to eat the labor and parts they put on that do not fix a car they would ether stop working on hard cars or train guys better. That is our policy on part and labor. So I get in my own pocket very quick. Great job and thanks for letting me know this issue, as I noticed the pressure reading immediately, but had not seen the issue, and now I need a new tool, as I don’t have a decade box. Like you, I always insist on diagnostics first otherwise I am not interested in the job. I started automotive college in '84. First job in '86. First ASE Certifications '88. I can still count on 2 hands (just fingers / no toes yet) the number of times that the problem was actually the ECM/PCM. Even at that, most of the time the damage to the ECM/PCM had an external cause.

I swapped a 5.3 into a Colorado and used a Holley terminator to run the truck, to make ignition and AC work I had to use low voltage relays to make ignition work. Same with the A/C put a temp sensor in the EVAP and was able to make the clutch cycle, works great. But Holley you can make custom scales for aftermarket transducers. Haven’t played enough with to figure it out.. like the video good to know , I’ll be troubleshooting in my shop a little different now!!!

I recently bought a Cen-Tech automotive multi-meter/tach on clearance at "the dreaded" Harbor Freight for $42 and it works great! I also have one of the more expensive Zurich OBD II scanners from the Freight. Again, it works fine for me. My point is that, as you said, a high dollar scan tool isn't always necessary, especially for DIYers like me that... A) Can't afford one. And... B) And more importantly, don't have a clue how to use one lol! I mostly work on OBD I and OBD NONE stuff but, as time goes on, I'm being dragged (kicking and screaming!) into the OBD II world. I can still rebuild and tune a carburetor AND use a timing light though lol!

So much going on in this video but love it! I have to agree that in my experience (as a customer) I've encountered techs that are just plain lazy and/or can't afford diagnostic training. It is very frustrating as a customer to have a vehicle in a shop that comes out "fixed" only to find out they changed a part and I still have the same issue. As you may remember, that's why I'm a DIY'er who fixes his own vehicles but learns from people like you.

True but there’s really no excuse for it these days outside of the laziness factor. You can gain a vast amount of knowledge with a little effort for little to no money with all of the resources available online. Even the stuff that is paid isn’t really that expensive. Something like Scanner Danner’s book for $99 would be a great start for a lot of those guys with very little understanding of electrical and get them started on the quest for more knowledge. I try to help a lot of the guys I cross paths with and they act interested but really I think they’re just happy to have someone fix the problem for them and move along. It seems the laziness and lack of effort extends far beyond the automotive industry these days anyways. BTW, I enjoy catching your videos from time to time!

As a suggestion for future pressure sensor mods, it may be easier and more reliable to modify the Gnd connection to the sensor. By elevating the 0v(Gnd) wire of the sensor, your signal out will be proportionally higher. Potentially you can use a simple voltage divider circuit with 2 resistors in series (+5v and 0v on the ends, and the pressure sensor ground rewired to the center between the resistors). 👍

Static pressure does not indicate system charge. It is a function of the refrigerant's saturation point and the external temperature. RU-vid won't let me post the URL, but I'm looking at a data capture right now on ScanShare, of a 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe that has 20 psi of static pressure with a full system. Pretty sure you know why that is so. I've found that the best way to explain it is to start with "time" stopped and a system full of liquid refrigerant. There is ZERO pressure. Now start the clock (time) and explain how and why the pressure rises and then why it stops. Pressure sensors always linear? That has not been my observation. Training *power tip*... don't yell at your audience 🙂

It’s really frustrating isn’t it. I guess it really is more than just knowledge at some point. Cars have gotten complex enough to the average person these days that I think it just takes people with a certain mindset to really diagnose all of the issues we see nowadays effectively. Some of us just have the ability to look at it from a perspective that others can’t or won’t and I believe that it’s a major aspect of it that can’t really be taught. I think it was those of us that were building pc’s or tearing things apart as a kid to see how they work that are the ones rising to the challenge. Part of the problem is attracting the right the people into the industry. A lot of young men don’t know that there is a whole segment of the industry that’s not wrestling engines or transmission and busting knuckles/backs all day. That you can make a good living working on cars by using your brain more than your muscles and how rewarding it is. We still haven’t really shook that grease monkey stigma overall. We really need some kind of targeted outreach to young guys in high school and not really for automotive in general but for the automotive electrical field.

Ford is getting good at this. Just like with their alternators for the older 500’s and such that had the wrong voltage regulators in them. I think it was Napa who was the only place we could consistently get an alternator with the proper regulator in it. 😂 Sometimes you just have to laugh at the incompetence in the Industry including the manufacturers. I just had a car in the shop from a local ford dealership that they sent over with trim panels loose everywhere claiming it had an electrical problem somewhere because the key fobs didn’t work unless in the pocket. They already tried a new key fob and said that wasn’t the problem. After checking it out and seeing that the antennas worked fine I called them with a part number for a key fob and told them to order it and after arguing with me for a bit that it wasn’t the issue they reluctantly did so. Programmed the CORRECT key fob to the car and when I told them it was fixed it’s amazing how fast they change tunes to being like awe shucks man that’s crazy. 😂 They bought the car from another dealer with the wrong fob and instead of looking up the vin and ordering another one they just grabbed a new one that was the same incorrect fob that came with it. The car didn’t have remote start and the key fobs were the wrong frequency. It’s frustrating when they bring you the car and then act like they doubt what you tell them. The lack of trained techs is a worldwide issue and all of the dealerships are suffering just as bad as the independents. It doesn’t help that they push them to flow charts and stuff either instead of teaching them an electrical foundation and how to think out problems critically. It sucks for the industry as a whole but it just increases the value for techs like us out there who’ve put in the effort to keep up with the ever changing technology and invest in the tools to get the job done no matter the hurdle. I’m constantly preaching to techs about taking advantage of all of the resources we have online these days to really learn and make themselves an asset that everybody wants hire. Anyone that’s willing to put in the work to learn can make themselves a six figure tech easily and bust a lot less knuckles in the process!

You hit the nail on the head. There are great nuts and bolts techs who are totally clueless on electrical/ electronic systems. The system that said they have the aptitude to repair cars is flawed. I tried to tell our local vo-tech leadership that cars have changed in the fifty years I was in business. There are too few of us that grasp this to teach the other 75% or more who don’t. It’s not most of those techs fault. There really needs to be a separate vocation that separates “turning wrenches “ from “scope/ DVOM operators “. I retired, now fix mowers and golf carts for a nuts/bolts guy. He only knows parts cannon and SWAG method to fix electrical issues. Mowers have EFI now and he is totally clueless. I’ve given up trying to teach him. He just stares blankly at scope patterns. My rant is over. I don’t have a clue how to go about fixing this technology shortcomings gap in technicians today. Scares me for our future. I’m 70 and getting a little too old to lean over my own car now.

Haha, great rant. I hear ya, see it in construction equipment world as well where parts are 2-6 times as much as auto.

I think one thing that fails to be brought up is the customers unwillingness to pay for diagnosis,”autozone does that for free, why should I pay” is a commen response when quoting diagnosis unfortunently,so then they go to the shop that doesn’t charge diagnosis and get what they pay for,end up back to you when it’s still not fixed and now have no money to diagnose or fix it, it’s an endless cycle I see where my shop is.
