I’ve got a 350 and this video went exactly the way that I thought. The Shelbys max torque happens really late, like 4,000 rpm, and the power builds pretty linearly through the rev range. As such it’s pretty ordinary down low and will be embarrassed by a lot of lesser vehicles from a dig. But from a roll, it’s an animal.
Not even going to lie. I used to doubt the production quality and content of this channel. It has come so far and is a MUST watch every time you post. Good job Sam and keep up the great work as this channel WILL be at 1mil in 3-5 years time.
I knew he would win the roll cause while you were shifting he still has nearly 2000rpm more to climb plus the slight hp advantage but they say the German engineering is miles ahead and you had turbos so the 350 is by no means slow great race bro
BMW had to make a choice based on power range vs TQ, when they sized those twin turbos. Large turbos will make big power -only after they spool up OR they could use smaller to bring in available TQ down lower in the rev range. The usual compromise is twin / smaller, but duel turbos, 6 cylinders have strong tQ by design (that's why 6 cylinders are so often used in trucks)....which is what they probably combined them 6cyl and turbos... made a perfect combination). Ford did the same...to make the power plant to power the explorer police vehicles.... V6 / twin turbos... Ford engineers are pretty good too.
@@JustinAEgan yea and maybe a gt350 with the dct 7 speed and launch control would probably help a little bit now I'm v8 mustang all day and night but I do wonder how the 3.5 high output Ecoboost hasn't been added as an option for this car with that raptor tq. and new exhaust I'd actually like to see one and I wouldn't mind a Barra option either lol
I feel like even though the 350 isn't a drag racer, we need a driver mod on the 350 to get that thing launched. He's bogging it and by the time it crawls out of the hole that M4 is gone. We can see the 350 is actually faster with the roll races but those launches are abysmal
That’s what I thought he either missed a shift or just didn’t know how to properly launch I know that 350 Would’ve stayed even or a bit in front , but the M4 still a cool car
@@ericknava9627 Definitely not a driver issue. 350 is not a 1/4 mile car and no driver is going to make it one. 1/4 is the only place the BMW can keep up, though.
That flat plane v8 has some wicked top end and crazy urgency! Considering that M4 probably makes like 540hp since BMW always lies about their hp. It pulled pretty hard
This is what happens when you bog down a launch, in a high revving, NA engine, with a manual transmission. I will give the GT 350 driver credit on his shifts, but his launch was dismal. To launch this GT 350, you really have to keep this engine in its power band= high on the revs= 5k to 5500 Rpm, and just slip the clutch enough to keep the engine in this rev. range, and the rear tires on the edge of traction limits. It takes practice, but its well worth the effort. Drag racing is all about the launch! Im glad sam does these roll races as well, so we can see the power difference. Great video.
The flat plane crank v8 in the Ford doesn't have the low end torque that the TT I6 in the BMW has. Most mustangs of the S550 platform can't launch for shit unless it's on a prepped surface with the right tire whereas this new G80/G82 M3/M4 has a better ability to put that power down from a standstill.
The advantage of the GT350 in a Roll comes from gearing and a higher red line. The advantage from a dig on the M3 comes from low end torque and the ability to put the power down. I can’t launch my S550 anywhere but on a prep surface. Can’t wait to get my allocation for a M3 X drive for roll races and 1/2 mile events.
@@alexk3469 the g8x tach goes to 8k but the redline is like 7200, gt350 tach goes to 9k but redline is 8250rpm. voodoo has a whole thousand more rpm more than the s58
I would rather have the GT350, than the M4. There's just something about that Voodoo engine and Tremec 6spd that is extraordinary. If only Mustang's could just find the traction during a dig. Can't wait to see that M4 vs the Cadillac CT-4 Blackwing with the no lift shift 6spd. Thank you Sam.
I have to go with the Shelby,…it’s that amazing sound! Either car is one helluva machine and you cannot go wrong with either. I just love that Shelby high revving voodoo engine!!!
I've had both cars and loved them both.. The build quality (engine, trans, interior, etc) is much better on the BMW. Had to replace the GT350 engine within the first year due to oil consumption... no other car sounds like the GT350. Instant smiles everytime you step on the gas!
A manual BMW doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me the thing basically drives itself down the road you're sitting there in luxury and then it's like hey user/driver you got to do this really important thing..... slower then the model with a DCT.
I knew in the roll race the higher revving GT350 would hit its stride and win. The M4 wins from the dig because of its low down grunt. Overall, I’ll take that GT350 all day every day. That GT350 is making music. Puts the M4 to shame.
"He took it from a roll but not by much". Considering the race is MAYBE 10 seconds and he pulled away every second of the race, it was fairly significant.
@@fread51 just stating a fact. The M4 will pass it and drive away. Nothing to do with being a fan boy. Sounds like your panties are a little bunched up!
The mustang would’ve beat you from a dig if he knew how to drive the car. Every time he used launch control it landed flat on its face. If he would’ve raced you without launch control he would’ve beat you every time.
Yep, I own a GT350R, you have to have launch control set to at minimum 4800 rpm any lower and it bogs, it needs the wheelspin because the torque isn't your typical down low torque. Get the tires spinning just a little and the car leaves way harder than this shows. His rolls he is also down too low in the RPM, he should be starting his rolls at 5500rpm.
Dang. Both are amazing. Shelby would out perform the bmw around the track, that's what it's built for, all that aero and power gives it an advantage, not only to that M4, but lots of cars even more power than it.
My 350 is not a drag car, but in a roll race it's not too bad vs world class engineering from Germany .... And a whipple makes it insanely fast ... On the track the BMW is a monster, they both are
The GT350 was bogging out on the launches. I'm thinking if the driver would have known how to get out of the hole better the 350 would have won those races also. The 350 puts out more HP and torque than the M4.
Races usually happen on rolls, so mustang would be legit, bmw is just so nice its hard to pick. On the street a bmw, and Highway or long roads mustang imo
True. But starting from 0 is like when ur at a red light. Side by side . Few other scenarios but for me I drive on a open highway for 25 minutes to get to work and I usually beat the comp
Mustang needed a better launch, warming up tires launching at different rpms. Car bogged off the line both times. Funny how the GT350 a 6 + year old platform smokes the all new 2021 m4 lol.
That high revving voodoo gt350 would be more fun to drive. No other Mustang has a flat plane crank mated to a 6 speed which gives it it's high revving abilities.
The GT350 sure sounds better. That is why I didn’t replace my E92 M3 (V8) with an M4, but choose something more raucous. Besides, BMW lost me on their front end “styling.”
It looks like the problem for the Mustang is throttle lag. There's a chip you can get to correct it, so that you have insta-power second you put your pinky toe on the gas pedal.
I was actually looking to buy a Shelby 350 awhile back, but ended up buying an M4, this was a good video to watch, I love all cars, but after owning an M4 I can’t have anything else
I was so excited to hear that Ford was putting a fpc in the mustang, but the end result was incredibly disappointing. For the money and power it should offer a lot more performance
If the guy in the Mustang would have spent half as much time learning how to launch his car as he did applying tacky decals to it, it probably would’ve been a much better race.
It's pretty obvious that the Shelby owner does not know how to launch his car. He should be slipping the clutch instead of using launch control. The only thing he accomplished in those 2 dig races was showing how badly the car bogs down when using launch control in these cars.
hmmm, that Shelby wasn't getting off the line properly. You can even see the guy on the track bury his face in his hands in dismay at the Shelby's start. 3:47
Great race but his gears are longer than yours. That’s what I like about V8s vs smaller engines. Still an awesome race, i really didn’t think it was a good match up at first but the BMW surprised me and held its own.
I just can’t really see how this is fair I mean he’s redlining it before he even get into gear this is a really good definition of it’s all about the driver not the car
Seemed like he was having a really hard time from a dig, the m4 is no slouch but those mustangs when driven properly are effing fast from a dig or roll
The shelby needed a driver mod, Sam launches consistently and with way better clutch control. Guy in the shelby is simply dumping the clutch from my guess. The sound is what really gives it away
Greetings Sam from one of your oldest fans checking in on the missed footage. The Voodoo like the Coyote or Predator are a marvel when moving massive air. 7.5k rpm and the right gears or reel them in. 3rd is way long and stretches legs. The Beemer is just doing Beemer things with its inline, was it X drive? Sheesh
